HBO on-demand is not available everywhere in the world. I, for instance, never heard of it before. Is this a new name for bit-torrent download HBO shows?
In my impressions it did not "bash redhat" in the first place, it simply said that he will not follow the same model as redhat. This can be considered bashing if and only if you believe that this model is "evil", and if you think like that then you have the right to bash (since you believe that the model redhat follows is evil).... untie knot in head...
The point is, he is answering the question about "Will Ubuntu ever demand licence fees or royalties?" and he goes on explaining that he will not do so, but if you want to pay there will be others that will have ubuntu code that will require you to pay (he cites then linspire). It is not he's plan, but he thinks that other people, who he can't control, will do it. Ubuntu is free, and if someone starts a distribution that come with, say oracle, based on ubuntu it will not be free (in fact it will be probably very expensive).
I use fedora, but I am pondering about changing to ubuntu. Fedora with the police that avoid the slightest legal (in the US) threat (to RH) is very annoying. Having to add a few (2, 3 or even 4) off-site sources to have MP3 or a driver for my wireless is very annoying to me. I really love Fedora, but the simplicity to install ubuntu on my laptop and have wireless working "out of the box" got me. If ubuntu had come with "Network Manager" I would be using it on the laptop by now.
I believe that you are correct, but on the other hand the career side does not help. The drive that almost all the employers push people, "work as hard as it is possible", "you must be the best", "there are others that can do what you doing better, if you slip you will become useless", all those mentalities are causing that. Along with the pressure of the society that equates money with a "good-life", this is what makes this "2005" that the grand parent is talking about.
Money does not equate happiness, no don't stop reading I am not some hippie that will say that one must open a farm and live with the nature, money does help provide needs for a good quality of life. But it is not the single factor. You must have friends, and I mean friends, not just people who hang out because you have a Ferrari or a great and the latest video-game. This is the most important, and money don't buy this.
The career men/woman should be able to slow down and not get fired for that. Work less hours, be more free to attend their family when need. This turn over the night and long hour working is fine for people who is young and starting up (maybe not even all of them), the point I'm making is that there should be an option. I am a string believer that a less-rich but also less-stressful with more "own-time" life is much better then a "long-hour", "very-rich", "sports-cars" with a possible heart attack on your 35th anniversary with lots of "empty friendship".
The problem is not with the people, I would also enjoy putting new songs into my cell.:-) And some phones do indeed use mid (or a modified mid) file. The hole problem is tranfering it to the phone. Some phones have cables, others can use the net or bluetooth.
As for paying for not talking, I can agree with you. Mainly if I am talking to telemarketers from those #@$@#$ phone companies. I could only wish they would allow me doing things online without the aid of those operators that don't know what they are doing.
Also young people tend to spend more time in the phone with gossips and the like, I was not much into talking in the phone but I do remember my sister spending hours and hours in it. The new technology is simply exploiting this, like "boy bands" that exploit the "ahhh he is so cute, I love him" fell that every pre-teen girl have.
What I find strange is people being classified as "so yesterday" simply because he is economical. Cell phones are really a gold mine, people will pay 99cents for small mid files that you could download by the ton off those good old BBS. People will pay a fee to transmit a few bytes in the air (SMS text messaging), while it is much cheaper to actually talk (here in Brasil the price of 1 minute of conversation is comparable to the price of one text message that has less then 1 or 2 kb). The worst everyone thinks they are saving money.
To help users that are concerned with those threats, that are not new as said before, there are a couple of firefox extension that will help prevent those problems.
Add block : permits blocking external javascripts with a flexible set of rules.
no script : enable javascript, java and plugins only to trusted domains.
Not counting that if every one of your applications have a different auto-update feature this can only mean that you have n ways to corrupt your system. With the auto-update being done by the base-system you have just one auto-update system to take care (worry).
Auto-update is a very dangerous operation, but nowadays it is unfortunately a necessity of the day to day computer life. And every application should be auto-updated, remember that many applications that do not connect directly to the net can be used indirectly to own a system.
If marijuana is or isn't addictive is a no issue, it is a fact that alcohol and nicotine are both addictive and they are perfectly legal in most countries. Some people feel that we should persecute those who smoke or drink and phase those two products into illegality, but I do fell otherwise, I think we, by we I mean my country, your country and every other one, should prefer freedom over prohibition.
I particularly don't use marijuana or nicotine, but I do drink and have friends that do smoke, and guess what? As long as they respect me and don't "smoke me" in closed places I don't really mind. It's bad for them, and I would be happy if they would stop, or in some cases slow it down, but it is their choice after all, I sure as hell don't want to stop drinking, I like it, and do it occasionally with my friends (you call social drinking).
In the light of those I think marijuana should be legal, be it addictive or not. Maybe even harder drugs should be legal, maybe with a better medical accompaniment or some kind of insurance added to the market price. Fact is that what makes the drug market so good and profitable is the fact that it is forbidden and the creation of legalized ways to acquire drugs would hurt this market that is associated with violence and many problems.
Just to be on the safe here, I don't think that all should be magically liberated tomorrow, but a studied phase out of the underworld can make things better.
Well poor people don't get quoted, only "important" people do. It is funny to observe that only revolucionaries and martirs are quoted from the poor half (or should i say 9/10?) of the history. Of course you may atribute popular saying like "money don't buy you happyness" to a quote of a unknown common person of the past.
I usually read like this, selecting what I am reading or about to read, on the web or any other texts on the computer. It helps me to find, vewry quickly where I am in the text in the event that something distracts me while reading.
Being a little off-topic here, but would you have some pointer on how to make java programs that work on the nokia phone? I will check this EclipseME soon, but I'm afraid I will have to dig into some API, and a how-to or even a javadoc style documentation would kind of help.
Well as far as I know mass (weight) gets conserved, so if you grow or get fat your mass can only increase if you injest the same amount of mass from food or drinks. So as far as I can see the total amount of mass over the world is the same.
Now if you think about larges cities, with thousands of tons of skyscrapes, buildings and even roads and cars that have their material brougth from other places, maybe your argument could be relevant localy.
If you want to do without antialias, you have to get a 300dpi monitor. This is more or less the resolution you have to print into an offset printer (that has a more or dot-or-not-dot color resolution, the basic diference is that the dots can have a variable size).
When you print with a photographic printer, colorjet or colorer lazer the color resolution is higher for each dot you can get a very good result with 100dpi.
Why would we need a 600dpi monitor when a 100dpi is quite good enought? Do the size of that pixel is realy bothering you? Even when printing, with a good photographic printer we only need about 150dpi.
I would rather have a really, really big monitor with 90" at 100 dpi then a 15" with 600dpi. in this monitor a 2.0 megapixeis would take 5cm or 2.1 inches without enlarging it. Not to mention all the CPU used to move arround the very, very large bitmaps from the CPU to the GPU.:P
I don't get this "leader of the free world", I live in a free country (Brasil) and Bush is not my leader. There a many people in Europe for witch bush is not a leader also. I never voted for him, I don't like him, I am happy that my country goverment question his polices frequently. He is not the leader of the free world, unless free means something else I didn't learn while studing english.
Respect the authoritys, don't question, don't think, just turn on your TV, game or access one of the hundreds of DMCA aproved DRMed sites and remember the big brother is watchig you.
I really think it's great that t-mobile is offering this to those people affected by the storm but so few locations and many w/o power? What good can it really do? Skype, where are you?
Exactly what I thougth, making a bad quote "what good is a free wireless when you have no power".
This is the world we live in. We talk about marketing being just FUD, but it's really not. People buy whatever people sell. I've seen funny stuff on infomercials that people obviously buy (a vacuum that sucks up your hair and cuts it with a blade inside the vacuum attachment- this was in the 'cut your hair at home' stage of the late 80's).
outch I instantly imagined a handfull of painful (or realy painful) way of misusing this gadget..:P
AMD would love to have another reason to point out the way the Intel C compiler libraries test for the presence of certain features in such a way as to never detect them on AMD chips even if they're present.
Is this true? Is there a pointer to a more specific information on that?

Unless it has trusted computing built in then it is Microsoft or apple that decide what you should run on their^H^H^H^H^H your computer.

This tend to happen when you live isolated in an island.

At least you had a chance to be heard, and many of you did vote against Bush, too bad there weren't enought.

Well unfortunaly this happens to me all the time with c++ also. Very anoying indeed, but it is not a problem with perl but with IM in general.
Let's hope that she don't grow into liking it too and become a telemarketer too.
