I'm tring to work out from TFA whether this is aimed at recruiting new teachers, or developing existing ones. If it's the former, then there have been various similar schemes (or perhaps it's a single often-rebranded scheme) in the UK over the last decade
There have been in the U.S. too. The National Board Certification program was started here to "make better teachers" and all that. States offered salary bonuses to teachers completing it, it was going to improve our schools, blah, blah. In the end, tons of teachers went through it for the salary bonuses (as much as $10,000/yr extra in some states), ballooning up education budgets across the country--all with absolutely no evidence that Board Certified teachers became any more effective in the classroom. I suspect this new program will be more of the same. Teachers will do it for the extra money, students will see no benefit.
I wouldn't mind seeing this happen to a few more patent trolls. Not only should the U.S. adopt a European style "loser pays" system for cases like this, but a "loser has to publicly admit he's an ass" policy wouldn't hurt either.
I wonder whatever happened to the "Dude, you're getting a Dell" kid. I'm betting drug addiction and eventual homelessness. Even as I write this, I bet he's somewhere selling his blood for crack. Kinda warms my heart.
Linux is so divided over each distro that I sometimes wonder if MS doesn't have agent provocateurs stirring the pot just to keep the community divided (and forever ineffectual). But then, like my grandma always used to say "Kid, never attribute to conspiracy what can be attributed to sheer blind fanboism."
anytime any candidate makes a peep about reeling back the military or intelligence industry in an election, they get crushed.
That's because their opponent immediately starts fear-mongering and calling them a pussy if they do. In the pre-1970 South politicians used to call that "niggering," as in which candidate can scare voters the most about the evil black menace that was going to rape their daughters if they didn't vote for their local race-baiter.
No, it's a RELIC of the 90's. Today *EVERY* OS comes bundled with a default browser. And yet MS is the only company that's still singled out for this practice. In fact, Apple has not only bundled Safari in iOS, but also BLOCKED THE INSTALLATION OF OTHER BROWSERS. And no one has even so much as raised an eyebrow at them.
Why not? They're doing the exact same think MS did in the 90's. In fact, not even MS had the balls to lock out other browsers the way Apple has with iOS.
As for competing browsers of course there are many: Opera Mini, Dolphin, Chrome, Mercury...
All just reskins running on top of Safari. Except for Opera I think, which uses some trick to actually run inside some server-side process.
So you're saying it's okay for Apple to COMPLETELY BLOCK OTHER BROWSERS FROM EVEN BEING INSTALLED on their OS's. But MS shouldn't even be allowed to *bundle* their browser with their OS?
I don't recall Apple being convicted of abusing a monopoly.
Yeah, and that's exactly what I'm questioning, genius. Why is Apple doing the EXACT SAME THING (even *worse* with regards to iOS browser lock-in) and NOT BEING CONVICTED?
Apple bundles Safari with every computer sold, last I checked. In fact, I'm pretty sure Safari is the ONLY browser you can use in iOS (everything else is just a reskin). And I don't recall Apple ever offering a Safari-free version of their OS, or giving me a pop-up screen asking me if I want Safari or not.
Bet you're a hoot at parties. I can only imagine how charming a fellow you are when someone uses the term "hacker" to refer to someone who breaks into computer systems.
I have never understood why prisoners should be forbidden from using an *offline* computer. Okay, so maybe they're blocked from the internet--but couldn't they at least learn the stuff they could do offline? Not even letting older prisoners understand how a modern computer even WORKS puts them so far behind the times that it's pretty unlikely they'll ever catch up.
Journatic: Go with us and you can fire all those expensive reporters on the ground and we'll replace them with cheap freelancers for next-to-nothing! And you won't take any hit in quality, honest. Hey...would we lie to you, pal?
Chicago Tribune: Yay, sounds great! We like money. And words are hard, 'specially the long ones.
Journatic: While we're at it, just between us, we also have some prime Florida real estate we can let you have for a steal...
And even if your country doesn't have a DMCA (and they WILL soon, if not already), don't think for a second that the U.S. can't extradite you here for punishment anyway, or that your government won't fall to its knees like a trained lapdog when the FBI snaps their fingers and says "Put him on a plane."
The sooner you people accept that the U.S. is large and in-fucking-charge, the easier it will go for all of us.
I'm more curious as to what Jacob Appelbaum's legal recourse in this is. Clearly he is being targeted by the government for persecution/prosecution. But how can he prove it when all he has is (presumably) illegal evidence? Just another example of how insidious these secret courts/investigations/etc. really are. A citizen is being targeted for persecution for presumably legal activities, and for anyone to even REVEAL that he's being targeted is illegal.
The only thing a REAL American distrusts the government on is taxes. Only commies don't unquestioningly trust the government on every matter except raising taxes on the wealthy or corporations. Otherwise you should not ask any questions and let the government do anything it wants in secret. Only citizens should not be allowed any secrecy or privacy.
For some reason I just got a flash of Timothy Olyphant's character in that episode of "My Name is Earl"--the white trash guy whose biggest claim to fame in life was his souped-up Trans-Am.
They just wanted an excuse to use the term "hackerspace" in yet another article.

hey protect their own innovations to an extent they deem reasonable
I'm pretty sure they didn't "innovate" a rectangle with rounded corners.

He taught us how to play Global Thermonuclear War...and chess!!
Timothy must be taking his stupid pills today.
Mom packed in an extra Snickers.
I love that movie.

only an American could be so racist.
Colonial Africa would beg to differ.

Yes, they're fat, white nerds. But this is slashdot. They're *OUR* fat, white nerds!
I've had both Xbox Live and PSN. And it should tell you something about how shitty PSN is that I'm still willing to pay the $5 a month for Live.
