  1. Yes, but the problem is not Linux's driver layer on Dvorak on How Microsoft Can Kill Linux · · Score: 1

it's just that those companies haven't chosen to support Linux. If MS decided to drop Windows and support Linux, everyone would immediately have Linux drivers ready to go and Windows' driver layer would be unimportant.

It's entirely a market share thing, not and OS thing.

I imagine there are tons of people like me who can't watch the show, but would love to be able to.

  6. USA Today reports the wrong problems on Broadcast Flag in Trouble · · Score: 5, Interesting

This story should be in the interest of nearly everybody who watches TV, yet the USA Today article makes it sound like it's only going to affect pirates, then has some vague reference to libraries being unable to use TV programs as educational tools.

Here's the problem: The broadcast flag can prevent normal people from recording any of their favourite TV shows. People care about that because they record shows all the time so they can view them later. People need to understand that what the FCC wants to do will give them less rights to watch TV how they want.

I think the workaround is a FF extension that create a button on your toolbar to mark a site as blacklisted (or whitelisted), then have a central database so everyone who has that extension installed benefits when one person marks a site as such.

If you find that somebody erroneously marked a site as blacklisted then you whitelist it and eventually the good guys out vote anybody who's trying to do another site harm.

As others have pointed out, MPAA companies haven't seen a 4% drop in sales or profits. Their profits are actually growing.

When they add up all the estimated pirated movies they find that it equals 4% of their gross. They seem to think that they can convert those pirates into dollars, but I've never heard any reasonable person make that claim. It's likely that most pirates wouldn't buy many movies in the first place (which is why they're pirates!). Especially in developing countries, pirate movie sales are successful because they're cheaper. People don't buy what they can't afford.

The only way the MPAA and RIAA can win is when they give consumers what they want, but they havn't realized this yet. For now I'd rather they go after the sites than individuals.

For instance, I do my business searches for southern Ontario from 701.com and while 701.com is usually a reference on Google Local, 701 has listings that Google doesn't.
