Red Hat still isn't actually profitable. They achieved "pro-forma" profitability. That means they were profitable as long as you don't count a bunch of certain costs and debts they have. So Billy probably thinks very little of Red Hat. When Red Hat actually achieves some actual financial success then maybe he'll raise an eyebrow before he sets his sights on destroying the little company.

You should be careful with your assumption that Open Source software is automatically "superior" to other kinds of software.
Right now I'm 22. I've been thinking about my own financial situation in concerns to my retirement since I was 15. I've already set myself up so that I won't need social security or a pension. I don't even expect social security to be around when I'm old enough to be eligible for it. There's nothing preventing someone my age from gathering and then properly investing his/her resources, both financial and time, in order to save up a huge amount for retirement. So for me, car theives are the bigger threat.
Thanks for trying to display the auto theif in a sympathetic light. In any case some people's lives are truly fucked up when their only means of transportation is stolen. It has a big effect on OTHER poor people, you know the law abiding ones.
You are a fucking moron. Cops exist not only to solve existing crimes but to deter future ones. They are doing their jobs in each and every case that you listed and we are all better off because of it.
Whats wrong with doing music solely for entertainment and soley for profit? It ends up being art sometimes anyway whether you like it or not. As for social change, well a lot of times the genre thats trying to enact social change just becomes a new fad instead which negates the whole purpose of it in the first place.
You have to understand that the number of autistic geeks who have a problem with Amazon's "fsking commercials and screaming colors" is just too small to be of any consequence. Most people, including myself, just don't have a problem with it for what we get in return.
Also whats with the Anti-Amazon sentiment? What exactly is wrong with a company surviving in part due to ad revenue? Does the immature desire for online companies to try to function in this world without advertising revenue still exist? Do you not know that Google has paid ads, in text form, on their site as well? And that they derive a lot of revenue by being the engines under AOL's and Yahoo's search engines?

They aren't slitting the throats of babies. Its just marketing to children. When has marketing ever caused you harm? Sheesh. The kids get marketed too, the kids get burned, they learn something which is what growing up is all about. You'd think they were cooking fetuses from all the belly-aching people are doing around here.
"I think the general population lacks the ability to analyze risks vs. rewards situations. Risk? About $800. Reward? You're smart now. If that's not enough for the average human to tackle new exciting things, I'm a bit concerned about where society is going."
Well thats assuming that everyone or even a majority of people would consider assembling their own computer "exciting" and a barometer of intelligence. If thats the way things are then automobile mechanics must be geniuses!
So any loser who spends too much time in their bedrooms on a PC playing EverQuest is automatically a misunderstood intellectually superior young person who felt left out because the jocks got all the attention and success? Do you REALLY expect anyone to believe the crap your spewing?
And what about the intelligent people who simply use their smarts to get really good jobs and high pay. Do they not get enough awards for their natural talents that easily compare with the jocks?
"So, she can't buy a car to practice, and she can't practice without a car. It's a big mess. The only forseeable way around it is to let her drive one of our cars illegally until she gets good enough to pass the road test."
Hmmm. In my state, anyone with a Learners Permit is allowed to drive a car, given that another adult who already has a license is riding in the car with them. Thats how we learn here in MA. Is it not the same in your state? Why don't you run on down to your DMV and pick up a drivers manual and check your local laws out.
MA has had biometric licenses for years. As more and more states get them your opportunities for getting them in states without such a system decrease.
I really can't come up with a response to that better than the one the AC posted, so I'll just repost his in case you missed it:
"God forbid that some of us should drive cars that can actually accelerate off a red light at a decent rate when carrying a few passengers or some cargo. And not being the one that gets crushed into a tiny cube in a collision might actually be a Good Thing. I suppose we should all drive little japcrap economy cars with 1.5L engines because it suits your political agenda. And that's just what this is: politics. If every SUV where banned today, would we really see a significant reduction in pollution? Keep in mind how much of it is produced by coal and gas power plants (because we're too stubborn and ignorant to embrace nuclear power). No, this isn't even about the environment. It's about activist-types and their Holy War against symbols of status and privelege. Because you're dirt poor and living off idealism, anyone with something to contribute to society who is actually rewarded for it is evil; a tool of The Man. You're probably one of those eco-Nazis that, once SUVs were banned or castrated, would shift targets, unsatisified until all comfortable personal transport were outlawed. After all, since you can't afford a car and have to make do with being subject to the whims of public transit, we should all have to suffer. Ban Everything!"
You know I really don't get all the fucking SUV hate mustered up by well geeks here. If someone wants an SUV lets just let them enjoy their purchase alright? Its not like they are cars that look like they are covered in wilderbeast hair or something and they aren't going to bring about the end of civilization. People want them, they buy them, leave it at that.
Now as to posters, posters are insidious. Not only are they annoying, but very rarely do they re-imburse property owners for the space they use up. Regular commercial billboards do, but the people postering don't. The fact that only the people who post those posters benefit is what makes them so especially henious.
If it were possible to level the technological playing field for developing nations, yes that WOULD be nice. But are we so sure that using Open Source would be the way to achieve that?
I'm talking about a world where the developed countries are filled with MCSE's and the developing world is using open source. Perhaps they may come to view their open source tools as the "ghetto" versions that the rich Europeans and Americans no longer wish to play with. A question they may ask themselves is "If open source is so good, why do so many Americans/Europeans run Windows on the desktop and proprietary Unix/ or WindowsNT/2k in the workplace?" They may simply end up NOT wanting to use them.

If Amazon already has all the books you want why would you need another site?
A bookstore is a bookstore. How is a "high-quality specialist" going to sell you a better book than a mass market store?

What are you talking about? Its still as easy as ever to list something for sale on eBay. I've been a member for years.

They AREN'T tracking you where ever you go. They are just making sure whoever is holding your license is actually YOU!

Heh nice opinion. That still doesn't change the fact that driving is a privilege.

Large companies tend to have lawyers who make sure their fine print is perfectly legal. Was that news to you or something?
I'm sorry. Was that tirade supposed to inspire more concern for animals over that of more important Human Beings?
