The Toyota Prius was one of the first "drive by wire" cars. When you step on the gas, you are really just telling the computer "go faster". At that point it's up to the computer to determine what do do with each engine (gas and/or electric engines).

It's also tied into the speed limiter, so when you hit 110MPH, it just stops accepting input from the gas pedal, and cruises at 110MPH.

Updatelet: I decided to go digging around froogle again, and found this. 5-port hub, 6V, 1000mA (most AA batteries around around 2000mAh, so it should theoretically last at least 2 hours). I'm going to order one and do what I did last time. IE, get a 4-port AA battery harness and wire it to the DC in port of the hub.

Even if this works, it would still be nicer to have an "all-in-one" option.

  22. I want a battery-powered hub on Battery-Powered USB Enclosure · · Score: 4, Informative

I'm really surprised that none of the manufacturers have tapped this. I want a little 5-port hub that takes a couple AA batteries, that I can throw in my laptop bag and use to do diagnostics (tap an ethernet line, etc). I've tried doing this myself, but most hubs I've found are either insanely high voltages (18.5 or something), or weird tollerances (3.2v, where it won't tollerate 3v or 4.5v), or huge wattage consumption.

I came close with a 5-port linksys "hub" that didn't consume much power and took 7.5v, so I chained 5 AA batteries together in a harness and mucked together a connector. It has a decent battery life (about 3 hours normal use), but the 5-port linksys "hubs" ARE ACTUALLY SWITCHES. Stupid linksys.

Anyways, if you happen to work at a networking manufacturer, lightly suggest to them to produce a small hub with a built-in battery bay that takes 4 AA batteries or something.

  23. Make grub even easier to use on Stable Linux Kernel 2.6.10 Released · · Score: 1

For those who don't know (I didn't until recently, and was doing everything manually), when you do "make install", make copies the bzImage into /boot/vmlinuz-VER-EXTRAVER, System.map into /boot/System.map-VER-EXTRAVER, and.config into /boot/config-VER-EXTRAVER.

THEN, it manages symlinks, pointing each respective base name to its newly copied version (IE, /boot/vmlinuz-VER-EXTRAVER to /boot/vmlinuz), it also takes the old symlinks and renames them to, for example, /boot/vmlinuz.old.

This way, I only have 2 linux-related grub images: an image pointing to the /boot/vmlinuz kernel symlink, and an image pointing to the /boot/vmlinuz.old kernel symlink, in case the newly installed kernel doesn't work.

"Wow, I just bought this new digital MP3 player, now I need to get some good headphones. Hey, this one says it's 'digital ready', while the other does not. I bet this one will work better!"

Granted, not everybody will think that way, but it's enough to get them to put that wording on the packaging. Also, I can't tell you how many network cards and prefab patch cables I've bought in the last couple years that say "DSL/Cable compatible", for the exact same reason.
