If they were using some sort of beam antenna, the 6 watts would be concentrated and have an ERP (effective radiated power) of much, much higher, maybe 100's of watts - (for a similar reason to why Laser pointers, at only a few milliwatts, can appear brighter than sunlight) -
I'm pritty sure that anyone infront of this beam would know about it quickly (as in finding they are unable to see anymore)!
The only viable Business OS on the PC was Microsoft Windows..... Linux + BSD varients have been around for ages, but it is only now the mindset of Business has started to examine these alternate OS's after M$ started to shaft them a little too hard. Now imagine you were the IT guy at a typical company a few years back, before the 'Linux revolution' had got started. Would you rip out the old, but amazingly reliable mainframes in favour of the Windows PC's that your staff complain about on a daily basis that the've lost files/ suffered crashes/ etc. My windows 2k Box crashes no reason every other week or so, it is not a problem, and gives me a chance to get a coffee while it reboots, but if a company's sales order was running on it, for those 2-3 mins, they could be loseing $$$ in lost revenue with their sales order team sitting doing nothing.
I recon that Linux will start to replace these Mainframes in the future.... Linux is becoming a standard for server OS's.... IBM's line of iron is already running it
What is stopping someone recording the Analogue outputs using a high quality sound card, and then burning the results onto CD?.... I'm pritty sure that there would be very few people who could tell the minute difference in qualtity, and then the format would be fully copyable by anyone....... So what about the digital watermark- since I doubt that every CD sold would have a different watermark, and therefor they'd still be unable to trace the original 'CD Pirate' from the n'th copy down the line.
AFAIK, Digital watermarks are removed when the music is encoded with Ogg/MP3 , after all these compressions work by removing the sound elements that humans percive poorly.
Maybe, this is just a way of ensuring only 'approved' cd's are playable on this equipment, and therefore protecting their monopoly from the threat of joe blogs distibuting his own music without going through a record company....
So, what happens when somone want's to email an XML enabled Word document...... Does it somhow become encrypted on its way out of the database, remains scrambled on it's way over the internet, and reassembles itself into nice XML once it arrives on the recepients computer?.... Doesn't sound like XML to me?!
How about for a cetain metro area, designate the 192.168.*.* IP addresses, as a Local internet (or would that be intranet....I dunno!). Now 192.168.0.1 (or maybe DNSed as www.index.local (note the nonstandard TLD)), would point to a web page that is for the particular area you are in, and link to various shops and businesses in that area, that you might be interested in..... These shops and businesses would pay for the connection, and also the internet that could be accessed from the same location.
This system would meen I could drive somewhere I had never been before, and instantly look up where the local , for example , Pizza shop is.... Why would that Pizza shop want to advertise to the world, when only people in the local vacinity would be interested in ordering....
I don't think it's going to do well at the box office... The memory protection inherent in todays OS's all the UP (user programs) wont be able to slug it out with each other as in the first incarnation. (would they each be surounded by a virtual glass cage I guess?!).
I wonder if the MCP will be an M$MCP? - Probably not, you'd only have to wait a while, and it'd crash all on its own...no fun there....
Isn't stating distances in these units a bit 'oldie style.... Shoulden't we be always stating Light Years, where,
27.4 milli-Light years = 1 Light day
114 micro-Light Years = 1 Light Hour
1.9 micro-Light Years = 1 Light Minute
Mix and matching units isn't the way to go, for instance, how many times further is the Voyager from the sun than us?... (12 light hours compaired to 8 light mins, is more complecated than 15 uLightYear compaired to 1368uLightYear, where in the latter, it can be seen that it is approx 100 times further.)
Did you never 'get lost' when you were a kid?.... Was it your parents fault, or yours for 'wandering off?' - The fact is that parents can't constantly keep an eye on there kids - there attention needs only to be distracted for a brief moment for kids to disappear, and this gizmo is for when, the kids find themselves lost.
Actually, I am a coder..... However, I suppose the thrill of coding I get is when I see the result of hammering in those little lines of code, rather than actually typing them in/designing it!. Just a little question, would you write code 'just for fun', if you knew there was no way you could get it to run on a particular target platform (eg, code for a imaginary processor, that will never be made or emulated)..... If not, then maybe the end result is important.....Maybe you don't earn a living out of coding?
Hmm, this must be the most boring thing ever. Hours of coding time spent just to make a emulator program that doesn't do anything usefull, apart from flash a few lights, or output some obscure code in punch tape format.... I can understand why emulators like 'Mame' have been popular, as they enable you to re-live the time you spent feading the ol' arcade games.... But, for Heaven sake, who is going to enjoy using these emu's once there complete?....
What pisses people off about M$'s product activation scheme, is that.
1. It makes it impossible to install Windows on more than 1 Computer, even if you own more than 1 computer..... Ambrosias scheme allows you to install on as many personal systems as you like, however, if you distribute the code publicly (over the internet), then you will loose your shareware licence when the code is discovered to be Pirate. This is an active deterrent to persuade you not to redistribute their shareware unlock code!
2. If you need to reinstall a million times, then you can get a renewed code a million times.. (Though it would probably cause suspicion within Ambrosia). Try activating M$'s products more than a few times, and that's it.
...The old 'Cocktail' cabinet style video games they used to have.....If a flat, wide, LCD or gas Plasma screen (for people with $$$), was laied on top, now that would be a great system to play the 'ol Packman on!
It also has a anti-blur device.

When activated, the screen shakes, and becomes double, in exact opposite to what your eyes may see after a fair few pints, thereby cancelling out the effect, and giving the sozzled user a valuable aid to get back home afterwards.
The point is that Proprietry software comes without source, and you are expected to live with the quality that is shiped to you.... Even if it takes your company down when your ERP database crashes!! Linux (and other free software) - Is offered with source, and you are invited to examine / amend the source to suit your needs - If your companys database fails under this setup - You only have yourselves to blame!
Put this another way, You could sue a TV Manufacturer, should a TV blowup your house, but if you opted to put together a TV from parts purchased from Maplins, I doubt if you could take them to court should things not work as expected.
Pure random data is imposible to compress - If You compress 1Mb of random data (propper Random Data, not pseudo random).. and you get, say 100K's worth of compressed output; what's stopping you feading this 100K's worth back through the algorhythm, again and reduceing it down even more.... again, and again, untill the whole 1MB is squashed into a byte! (Which, obviously is a load of rubbish).....
Wouldn't it be cool if someone built an 'arena' which matched a level from quake. People would ware a standard VR helmet, and a portable PC, and 'run' around the real areana, and be able to touch the walls, but only see whats presented them through the VR headset. There would be some sort of radio triangulation, which would track everyones position within the room, and relay the information back to a main server....- This would put Qzar/Laser quest to shame!
I expect this system is a little like Raid 5, Used on Hard Drives. Eg, 5 disks, 1 goes down, you still have enough data to restore the failed drive.- This seams simalar to been sent 5 Million UDP packets, 1Million get lost on the way, however, you still can piece together perfectly what you wanted from the remaining 4Million.
I'm pritty sure that anyone infront of this beam would know about it quickly (as in finding they are unable to see anymore)!

I should have asked is 4.7Ghz 4x faster than 1.2Ghz.... Put it down to too little sleep and too much coffee!
Tony.
Is 4.7ghz 4x faster than 2.4Ghz, because 400mhz was approx 4x faster (if not more) than 100mhz?....

MetaSearch=Search a set of search engines
MetaModerate=Moderate a set of Moderations
MetaPad=Pad a set of Pads???!!
Can 'Meta' prefix a Noun, rather than a Verb?
