Windows vs Linux (or mac) WinCE vs Palm OS XBox vs PS2
Microsoft are moving from the PC space, where people have amazingly decided that a crashing computer is acceptable, to the consumer electronics space, where crashing is mostly unheard of. Either they improve there QA, or people will be returning these back to where they bought them after freezing up while in normal use!
On another note, the apple iPod plays MP3 and Wav files, in addition to their implementation of (the open standard) AAC.
Will this box play anything other then Microsofts proprietary WMV... or is this another attempt by the beast of Redmond to kill off competing formats?
We have a DECT phone in each room - If I want to ask my other half somthin, I just phone her! - two key presses on the phone handset, is much easier than spending a good 20 seconds activating IM, and sending her a message (assuming that she even has her PC on at that time)!
"But the only version that was hauling passengers -- a low-speed, half-mile people mover at Birmingham International Airport in England -- was junked four years ago in favor of a standard shuttle bus."
The train was junked not 'in favour' of a shuttle bus, but rather that it kept breaking down and cost too much to maintain. Believe me, as someone who traveled between birmingham station via both the maglev, and the shuttle bus, I can say that the maglev was much, much quicker, and more conveniant.
There is now a new monorail system that runs along the path of the old maglev. This one uses cables to pull cars along tracks instead of magnets - Simpler, more reliable technology..... It actually goes faster than the maglev as well!
If you were using unix/linux, then there would be no market for Citrix..... X is network aware, so you could use remote apps, as if they were local. Citrix is just a hack to attempt to bring the same functionality to windows.
So I installed W2k for a friend a few days ago - Connected to the internet to get the RPC patch, and got infected with this work in under a minute - Not even time to get the update!...
Now, getting rid of the worm is annoying, but is easily done. Can you imagine however, the chaos if the author of the worm also put nasty bios flashing code into it... Millions of PC would be heading for the dumpsta! Shops/busnesses/transport/universitys would all end up grinding to a halt, The economy would be up shit creak, and for a few weeks anyhow there would be a huge shortage of PC's through people panic buying new units - hardware prices would sore.... (good time to buy Dell stock maybe?)
I think it should be noted that the article says they can only predict the likelyhood of hurricains occuring, rather than actual individual instances of hurricains as that title of this story implys..... We wont be able to fast forward the model, and predict a hurricaine years before it comes along for instance.... (Somthing to do with Chaos theory ends all hope of this ever happening..... You'd have to predict a leaf falling someplace else first!).
So, correct me if I am wrong, but isn't what the inquirer saying is that intel could be repackaging the xenon processor as an pentium.....
I thought the xenon was 64 bit, and ran 32 bits under emulation much slower than current pentiums.... So, I think they may be barking up the wrong tree..
Intel just found a way of squeezing more cache on the chip!
Tony.
Buy 3 Led light Keychains from me for a fiver . see here Thanks.
In the UK, we have Smartcards tied to the customer, plugged into the set-top box. I believe that it is impossible for the Set top box (STB) to decrypt the signal comming in, without accessing the key from the smartcard. The smartcard is fed encrypted packets that the STB cann't understand, but these packets are decrypted and recognised by the card to mean things like 'Active channel' or 'suspend service', or 'Key for the next 10 seconds on this channel is xxxx'.
With this setup, I can't see why open source can't be used. The only way the open source program can decrypt a particular channel, is by access to the key, which it does by querying the card. This card is under full control of the cable/satellite services, who will still be able to dictate if you are able to watch a channel or not.
Plan a: Sue em!
(if that doesn't work) Plan b: Get their link posted to Slashdot..... that'll burn their serves off the net!
Seriously, I was approached by the Scientologiests a few years back (before knowing anything about them). I was a little naieve (sp?) , and signed up for a course in Dynetics... What they said seemed very plausible. The people who were running this course did seam a tad strange, almost as if they were in a daze....
After doing a search on Infoseek for dynetics, (Google wasn't around then), I was quite shocked what these people could be up to. I decided not to return, though they phoned me back loads of times trying to persuade me to.
I now consider Scientology akin to a computer virus, exploiting a flaw in the human brain, and spread from one to the next. First the brain is rooted. Trust is gained. And then, over the corse of many months, subsystem after subsystem is taken down. All for the persuit of cash. The net could well have saved me, by downloading info into my head, that prevents rooting by these people.
I can only feel sorry for those who are already taken over by this cult.

To be quite honest, I dont care at all if.net is better than Java. The point is that.net is controlled by Microsoft, and currently only runs (officially) on M$ products. Mono might be outlawed by Microsoft at any point. You are at their mercy.
The ONLY reason that Sun hasn't relinquished control of Java, is that if they had done so, Microsoft would have been free to embrace/extend/ corner the market.... The same as what they did with Internet explorer.
So, how many non-geeks use anything but, or even know of anything but IE?
Businesses would standardise on MS java, and java on any other platform would become unuseable.. (just as there are web pages that are only useable in IE).
By stating "I'm using C# over Java" you are selling you sole to the devil...You wait till microsoft start extending DRM into the specification, therby relegating projects like Mono to the sidewalk, at this point it will be M$.net, or nothing. Do not think this will not happen.
So, Its your choice. Choose to go with the, arguabily faster/easier to code offering by our (sarcasm) good friends at Redmond, or choose to fight Microsoft by writing code that will run on all platforms from mobile phones to IBM mainframes. Believe me when I say we will all be better off in the long run.
Joking asside, but if you've ever programed in RPG, Whitespace MATTERS.... Every command/Argument/Result HAS to be positioned in a certain column...Somthing like this
C NUM1 ADD NUM2 RESULT C MOVE 'HELLO' STR 10 C DSPLY STR
My position is that, as a (soon to be) parent, It is ME, NOT the owners of a adult Website, or anyone else for that matter, who should have the choice to allow or disallow what my kids view. The government should have the power to require websites to restrict their content FOR MINORS (and not a blanket censorship for all). If a parent, who thinks there is nothing wrong with allowing his/her kids to view such sites, there is nothing stopping them personally choosing to bypass the kiddie-restriction, on their heads be it, but this is still giving the parents the choice.... Giving the government this power, gives parents the power to choose. T.
One reason that I would think twice about letting my kids (if I had them) use the net would be for the amount of accessible porn, and the like that is so freely, and easily available. Over a certain age (15 maybe, maybe more) then anything goes, but, as it stands, I can click on a page within a presumably benign google search, and be presented with something that isn't. Allowing sites to show 'information inappropriate for minors' to minors is like selling kids top shelf mags, or allowing them in to the movies see uk cert 18 movies. I'm completely against censorship to those of us who have arrived at adulthood, but saying that kids should be allowed to view adult material because of 'free speech' is wrong.
...or HP for that matter!

I'll stick with java thanks.

If you're interested in IBM iron, then the Common conference (www.common.org) is well worth a visit.
As IBM now are going Linux/Java, several of the training sessions are geared around this... Well worth it IMO.
