The only thing we didn't like about Lindows: it defaulted to 1024 X 768 resolution. we'd prefer 1280 x 1024.
I thought they were going to say "we'd prefer 800x600". 1280x1024? Give me a break! There's still a lot of people out there with 15" monitors and low quality 17" monitors.
We have a T1 Worldcom line here in Toronto, it's fine for the most part, but we have some servers hosted (?somewhere?) in the US with Level3, and we've had a horrible time connecting to them today. Through my home cable Internet connection, the connections to our servers are fine.
I'd like to present a challange to you all: Please name any TV shows that became GOOD movies. I can't think of any.
This is a pretty subjective question (I liked The Saint), but here's a few:
- Charlie's Angels
- The Fugitive
- Star Trek (hit & miss)
- South Park
- Transformers
- Beavis & Butthead
- Lots of Anime....
Southpark and Beavis and Butthead pulled it off without jumping the shark (IMO), and Simpsons has jumped the shark and gotten away with it a zillion times (Simpsons are going to xxxxx! Principal Skinner is not Principal Skinner! etc. etc. etc.)
Since this comission theft is apparently legal, I'm going to modify our GL system here at the office to re-code all our product sales as being sold by me, so I get all the commissions. Why should those pesky sales people get any of the money, anyway? If they want money, they should become c++ programmers instead of salesmen.
This is the dumbest idea i've ever heard of. Come on, you think you're not going to get caught? Puh-lease. All those salesman wondering why they aren't getting any commission checks anymore?
*I* only skim off 1% of their sales. I mean, sure it doesn't provide as much instant gratification, but at least it provides me with a steady income.
I don't know that a bar code is necessary... but you bring up a really good idea - A lego sorter. A machine that takes in a ton of bricks and looks at each one and then enters it into a database.
I propose a kit made using only pieces from the Lego Mindstorms kit and the Lego Mindstorms camera;-) Heck, if someone can make a photocopier, surely this would be possible.... and useful too!
Could someone please post the article here on Slashdot? I keep trying to read it on the NY Times website, but my eyes are continually drawn towards "Eve Brecker". And she's WHAT??? Only 15!?!??! Oh lord.....
Well, it's defintely not going to have much of an effect if Netscape doesn't even bother to mention it's out. Going to http://www.netscape.com just lets me know that Faith Hill is back (from where?) and some relative of the Kennedy's is in jail for 20 years.... if Netscape's not excited about the new 7.0 release, why on earth will I?
It's not just Id games. Check out The saga of CmdrTaco's quest to play Neverwinter Nights [slashdot.org] - he built the machine basically as a NWN kiosk, and had a lot of trouble doing it.
(I want to replace the case fans with those translucent 2-tone red/blue case fans that I saw at LinuxWorld
I was going to pick up NWN, but once I saw on the box that the "Optimal System Requirements" included a 2 tone case fan, I thought I'd hold off. I want maximum performance out of the games I buy.
DVD stands for "Digital Versatile Disc." In it's infancy it was known as a Digital Video Disc, but everyone wanted the format for their own purposes, so the "V" was changed to Versatile. Now you can have video, audio, data, etc. all on one format and not have a contradictory name.
Can you (or anyone else) provide a source on that? I recall when Laserdiscs were at there peak talk of DVDs and that officially DVD didn't stand for anything. I can't find anything official saying one way or another what it stands for though.
You actually have people doing SQL queries for reports? Rather than views, I would suggest a quick webpage that runs hardcoded queries for the types of reports you want these people to able to run. I would never give anyone real access to the DB if you don't want them to have access to all the data.
Sure, although the end users don't write the SQL themselves. They use MS Excel, and sometimes Access. There's an Access front-end for canned reports; but our sales guys here need ad-hoc reports. They want to see how well specific products are selling in specific regions. They want to have data according to the fiscal periods of different accounts. But, they should only be able to see their own accounts.
You're trusting your sale and accounting data with mySQL? You brave, brave man..
I trust the data I pull out of it to be good. It's used to generate reports only and for sales guys to do quick queries with. Data's imported nightly at which time I do various queries/checks to make sure the data's in synch with the big old Oracle database.
For Christmas? I want views!!! Precious views!! I need to secure certain data from the prying eyes of account managers and sales folk. So everynight I'm rebuilding these summary tables for each user! Argh!!!
There's no such thing as row-level security.... my kingdom for views in mysql!!!

Sorry, I'm a troll who only reads the headlines and not even the
Hmm, has anyone ever seen a two dimension robot? Or four dimensional for that matter?
I swear I saw a two dimensional robot walking down the road the other day... but he turned left and completely dissappeared!!!
First a 3 dimensional monitor, now a three dimensional robot?!?!
Good lord, pretty soon we're going to have 3d plants, trees, maybe even people!!!
Sharp has developed a 3D LCD display that works without glasses.
I have a 3D LCD display at home that works great with or without glasses.
Now what would really be cool, is a 2D LCD display... I mean, sure they're already pretty thin.....
oh wait.... I'm supposed to read the article first, aren't I?

I think we'd still miss a number of problems, 'cos there's just so many different screens
Yes, a number of problems including spelling mistakes and bad grammar.

Sweet! Time to polish off my old Captain Power gun!!!
Wasn't the Ottawa case more about copied games then teh mod-chip?
Yeah, but come on, this is slashdot! The story has to be skewed to make it look like our freedom and human rights are being trampled on!!!
I Love being able to run MS Word, Powerpoint and multiple vim, ssh etc sessions on the same screen.
:-)
You mean just like I do on my Win2k box?
Woops, forgot what crowd hangs out here, mod me down
Dismiss this as karma whoring all you want
Oh no, I won't dismiss this as karma whoring. To be a karma whore you need to post something worth being moderated.
Some of the biggest e-commerce blunders have been allowing hackers to read credit card numbers, etc.
:-)
Very good point. So what we need is a hard drive with two heads, one readwrite, and one write.
Last posted to Slashdot in March. [slashdot.org] Same article.
Well c'mon, it is the summer. Just like Television, the web runs out of content and needs to replay old stories to keep people watching.
Come back in September or October, should be something new on by then.
