The plasma thruster is designed to deliver low amounts of thrust over long periods of time with low fuel consuption. They are best suited to use on interplanetary probes and that kind of thing, not for reaching escape veolcity.
One of the most interesting things about this new thruster (developed here at the ANU) is that by using the double layer the need for any metal parts coming in contact with the plasma is reduced. This greatly increases relabily through reduced erosion of the thruster.
We have a Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer that is still running it's original aquisition computer.
It is a mid 80s HP Basic Machine with a pre Heiracial file system (no directories). In order to dicide it's massive 10Meg hard drive into usable sizes it is pre-partitioned into 4 partitions to store your programs/data in. It is dual head with a green text screen and a very nice flat screen colour graphics screen (that is still clear and sharp) and an audio expansion pack. A few years ago the hard drive died, HP provided us with anew one and we reformatted and installed the software again and off it went again.
We have just done developing a new windows based computer to take it's place, but the users are delaying changing over because the old system just works.
I am pretty sure that in Australia comunication must bridge a public thuroughfair before it comes under legislation from the government as a comunications system.
When the university I work at handed it's privatly owned road system over the government every computer network or piece of cable that crossed over or under any road on campus had to be removed as they where not an approved telecomunications provider.
To try and legislate rules for internal comunications is ridiculus. Even under the Australian system it is open to stupid interpretation, officicially shouting accross a road to someone else is illegal.
Here in Canberra Australia our local utilities company spun off a networking company called TransACT which has now run high speed networking past 50% of the homes in Canberra. Canberra's population is around 313,000 people and the city spans an area of around 40x40Km.
I can't believe that many cities in the world could be more spread out than Canberra is. We have lots of "green space" between suburbs and very little medium or high density housing.
TransACT fiber to the section copper to the house network has a bandwidth of around 53MB/s of which up to 1MB is currently available for internet in a standard household instalation. It also carries local and international free to air TV stations, Pay TV, and Video on demand.
You are kidding yourselves if you believe that an american company couldn't roll out a similar network.
Mythtv supports seperate front and back ends. This means you can use your xbox to play back your video and display it on your tv, and a server with tuner cards seperately to record the stuff.
I have this setup under construction at the moment, I have xbox part of it working well and am just waiting on some hardware for the server.

TransACT streams your selected channel from their HQ directly to your set top box via high speed ADSL (this same link also contains high speed internet).
So recordign more than one channel at once, or even watching on eand recording another becomes a problem.
When SMS was first introduced here it was not unusual for messages to take hours to be sent or to fail alltogether. I started making use of the automated receipt system that will tell you when the other person has recieved your message.
The quality of service has improved hugely in recent years so that 95% of messages are now delivered within seconds, and very few are lost at all.
Unfortunatly the automated recieipts are now a charged service so I have disabled them and now have no idea if they are losing my messages.
This would make a lot more sense than some story about how if you get all the mp3s and assemble them in the right order and burn to CD it still is recognised as the original.
I am certain that the ranking would be mainly due to actually copying of CD media that may have "Accidently" been sold before the "release date".

I noticed the other day that an electronics outlet here in Australia has started selling platinum battery terminals. This has got to be the most stupid thing I have every heard. I am sure the only reason you would choose Platinum over gold or heaven forbid copper would be its much higher price tag.
The P4 tested by Tom's hardware as far as I can see is not a pre production 2666, but a normal run of the mill 2000 overclocked to 2666Mhz by upping the voltage, water cooling the procesor and cooling the RDRAM.
Stable intel P4 2666 chips probably won't be available for people to overclock until later in the year.
I have to agree with TheMightyZog here. CDs are produced by stamping the data into a polycarbonate substrate and applying a thin layer of aluminium ontop for reflectivity. Then on most discs there is another layer ontop of that for scratch protection. This is not always the case some CD singles I have seen have not had the protection layer on top and are therefore very easy to damage. Anyway CDs definately are polycarbonate discs with a layer of aluminium added, not the other way around.
I was under the understanding that most western tasmania is still untouched wilderness, this would leave heaps of habitat available to them. The wilderness of Tasmania is the reason that many people still believe that there are still live "tassie tigers" in the wild.
We don't know why the thylacine was killed on the mainland thousands of years before it disapeard from tasmania. The most plausible theory is that the Dingos (introduced domestic dogs) that came with the Aboridginal australians out competed them to extinction. Does this mean that we should consider all of australia as possible re-habitation area's.
I was under the impression that there are quite a few individual preserved thylacines still in existance. Probably not enough for the genetic diversity needed for full reintroduction of the species, but definatly enough so that we wouldn't just be recreating one animal.
Lastly I thought the thylacine was hunted to extinction due to the belief they where eating the farmers sheep. I believe the goverment actually had a bounty on there heads. I have never heard before that they where good eating.
I have recently been trying to find a replacement for origin which has become the standard ploting/data manipulation program in our research department. Unfotunatly it is very expensive and we don't have to budget to buy the number of licenses we require.
I tried many free linux ploting programs many of them holding themselves up as origin replacements, and none of them had anywhere near the features or intuitive interface of origin.
I think the closest one I found was Grace (previously xmgr) which is great for generating plots but doesn't help much with the correlation and sorting of large amounts of data the way origin does. Several students in our department have used grace to produce the figures for their thesis's, mainly because the postscript file output works well with latex.
Any suggestions as to a better program would be greatly appreciated.
Tom did test the MP version of the Athlon which has the same core as the XP (palomino). He also tested a pre-XP version both gave very similar results.
I suspect the problem may be that the motherboard Tom used did not properly support the Palomino core's thermal diode protection. This is not a problem with intel cpus as they have all the required saftey circuitry on die.
Is this DVD bootable? Last time I checked the Woody boot floopies where still a major stumbling block on the road to a stable release. I just finnished installing Debian Unstable (sid) on my laptop by installing a base debian potato system from floppies and then upgrading to unstable.
I was wondering if this DVD used a similar system or has a workable version of the woody boot floppies included.

I have a Windows server 2003 machine that was totally Windows Updated up and it was still rebooting.
I installed the patch downloaded from Microsoft's website and it is now fixed.

I would have thought this would give you 360 1unit long lines spaced 1degree appart radiating out starting 50units from the center point.

Some mention of GNU/Debian would have been nice as all apt4rpm is doing is adding the functionality that debian already has.
