  13. Cleaning up nuclear waste on New Research to Find Environment-Cleansing Bugs · · Score: 2, Insightful

IANANES (I am not a nuclear environmental specialist) but the bugs can do one of two things in nuclear waste. First clean up the non-nuclear hazerdous waste, like the bugs eating say PCBS in an area which is also radioactive. The second thing they can do is oxidize or reduce radioactive element. Say for instance you have radioactive element X with a valence charge of 2+, the bug reduces the element to a charge of 0. Thus the radioactive element, while still radioactive, may be less likely to leach with water further down into the ground.

but there are only 2 places where the US uses land mines, Cuba and Korea.

In korea these land mines are in a strip of land separating North and south korea. These mines help protect our soldiers. And no one lives in the DMZ so its not dangerous to civilians. While 30,000 soldiers may sound like a lot, remeber that the korean war was basically a draw because how many koreas/chines got killed they were able to send more.

So before we go signing any treaties lets be clear what we are risking.

  18. Great that the evidene floats away! on NASA to Investigate Hydrinos · · Score: 2, Informative

    From the FAQ:

Why aren't we awash in hydrinos and why haven't they been seen before?

Hydrinos have a number of properties that make them difficult to detect:
Free hydrinos diffuse out of containers very easily, as the largest of the species (n=1/2) is about the size of helium. Further, hydrinos are auto-catalytic: with the appropriate concentration maintained they will collapse to n=1/100 or so, at which size they will diffuse rapidly out of practically any container. Hydrinos can slip right in between the atoms of solids, including the atoms f container walls.

Being extremely light, they rapidly float up into the atmosphere and diffuse into space.

The conditions for hydrino production, that is, collision between free H and a system with a resonant "energy hole" (e.g., K+ and K2+) at low concentrations, are not common on Earth. Free H is extremely reactive and therefore difficult to keep free.
