Speech is not an abuse of power and Slashdot is his journal.
Judging by his history of duplicate posting and horrible and irresponsible behavior as an "editor", that means he doesn't read his own journal. Amazing.
I've written this in other comments and my karma has been oblitterated for it, but the simple answer is:
They don't give a shit.
Combine delusions about what Slashdot has become, with deliberate ignorance of how it is affecting the users and linkees, and you get Malda & co's current "service level".
They don't give a shit about dupes, flamebaiting and inaccurate articlet titles, slashdotting or anything else.
I hope you're similarly outraged at the portion of your tax dollars that go to pay interest on the national debt. Because that makes the entire cost of this program look like small change.

NASA's New Shuttle
·
· Score: 0, Insightful
I'm glad to see NASA finally realizing the Shuttle isn't what it was supposed to be and going back to something that works.
They're being smart, too. Much of the billions spent on shuttle technology is being used where it makes sense (lots of experience now with large solid rockets and LOX/LH propellants). "Old-fashioned" technology is used where IT makes sense (reuseable capsule design).
The Shuttle had wings because the Air Force wanted a craft that could launch, deploy a payload, and land near its launch site one orbit later. That's not easily done with ballistic trajectories, so you either need fuel or wings. Wings are lighter.
That requirement was essentially dropped long before the Shuttle actually flew, but its legacy meant a VERY large area covered by very fragile tiles that are a maintenance nightmare.
One day, we'll develop some crazy material that can handle re-entry heat without ungodly amounts of maintenance. It'll be tough, and allow us to finally treat winged spacecraft more like airplanes. That's not now.
This is exactly what they needed to do to keep themselves relevant and useful. With the money they're using to encourage and procure private research, and their fantastic recent successes in robotic probes, I'm really, really proud of NASA right now.
Sure, they're a big stupid bureaucracy, but at least they're lumbering in a reasonable direction now.
because Slashdot is a fun irreverant, loose, informal, blah blah blah site.
So he basically admits that he just doesn't care. At all. As long as he's happy, Slashdot will be a giant turd.
A giant turd that routinely wipes out servers and costs innocent people thousands in bandwidth each year. Rob is like a four-year-old at the controls of a tractor - blissfully unaware of the chaos he's creating and giggling like an idiot the whole time.
They don't care. They have contempt for their readers and apparently for their subscribers.
It's not that hard to search for a few keywords from an article.
It also wouldn't be that hard to do a quick grammar & spell check of a submission that was otherwise acceptable.
And, hey, here's a crazy idea - how about knowing a little about what you're submitting so that you don't post articles with obvious errors, omissions or lies?
The Slashdot editors merely mash "ACCEPT" on articles, apparently arbitrarily. They don't check to make sure the links work. They don't change obviously misleading or flamebaiting titles to something less inflamatory. They do zero spell checking.
o Use unlimited mod points to moderate things using "OVERRATED" to suppress opinions you don't like. o Pretend you're a legitimate news site when it serves you. Pretend it's a "geek site" when it doesn't. That way you get all the benefits that come under the pretense of "journalism", without any of that troublesome "integrity".
Your Parent post is talking about a piece of something hitting the tail, as the Shuttle leaves the launch pad. The thing breaking off the tank happened well into ascent, as the boosters were seperating.
I hope the chunk-of-whatever-from-the-tank didn't hit the orbiter anywhere, or that if it did the air at that altitude is thin enough that it didn't decelerate it enough to cause much damage.
Why are you paying THEM to tell them they're posting duplicate stories? Shouldn't they pay YOU, or better yet, concentrate on being EDITORS instead of mindless story-publishing bots who use their unlimited mod points to remove posts they don't agree with?
Great job, Taco. You fire that flamebaiting coward Michael Sims, then proceed to hand the story posting duties to someone who has as much contempt as you for your readership.
If you valued those of us who visit your crappily-coded site or click on your ad banners, you'd probably do something about this, but you wont. Instead you'll hang back and sip Gin 'n Tonics while basking in the mediocrity you've given the world in Slashdot.
... we've got blank stares.
He's got all the qualifications:
1. Can't spell
2. Horrible site layout
3. Rambling article trying to make himself look smarter than he is.
It's hard to tell if he's got the self-delusion and inattention to detail fully down, but we could be looking at a Malda clone here.
Judging by his history of duplicate posting and horrible and irresponsible behavior as an "editor", that means he doesn't read his own journal. Amazing.

I guess that depends on the value of the winner's dignity, doesn't it?

How about 'Rob "Dupe-Poster" Malda'?
Has a nice ring to it.
Because it's funny to watch something that could be so cool go so horribly wrong due to the ineptitude of the people running it.
If it wasn't for Rob's stunning inability to be good at what he does, this site would just be an information source.
But now it's just a huge, fun joke.
Meets all the criteria.
You do a much better job actually RTFAing (RingTFA?) they they, and, well, you actually read Slashdot as well.
And you can obviously mash a button on the screen, so you're more than qualified.
Rob, hire this guy and others like him to make your site a non-joke.

This is the definition of "contempt for readers".
But it's nice the ignorant and uninformed Slashdot "editors" are TOO LAZY TO RTFA THEMSELVES to find this out.
"Your tax dollars at work", indeed.
Slashdot's editors need to be ashamed of themselves for pressing the "Accept" button on articles like this.

CmdrTaco's Brain (due mostly to the Duplicate Article Cortex).
Just kidding. Given Zonk's proofreading capabilities, it's actually likely.
That's AWESOME!

Why the hell would anyone buy a subscription?
Because it goes down on everyone! LOL!
Now give me my karma because I have made an anti-Micro$$$$$$$$oft post on $$$lashdot! LOLOLOLOL
That link in your Journal entry for today is funny as fucking hell.
