Being based outside the country you currently reside in has some usefullness.

Also, it is good to see that, despite living in economically depressed areas of France, they are able to get online at all.

As far as the (US) media coverage of the French riots, I agree, it's been almost all about the damage being done and very little about what they were angry for. I had to ask a friend who is a French national what in the would they were rioting for.

Her response was interesting, mainstream France does not harbor any noticible racism for black Africans. They have been and continue to be integrated into mainstream french society. The flare ups have been towards more recent north african immigrants who happen to be majority arab & muslim decent.

Like elsewhere in the would, people look for scapegoats whereever they can, in this case the more recent immegrants consume french health care and public assistance resources but are not far enough along in integrating (or refusing to integrate) to start contributing taxes and the like to make up for the difference. With unemployment being high in specific parts of France this can lead to problems etc etc.

I can't speak to if there is really any intentional discrimination of anybody. This was all from a 40 YO mother who is more in the world of shopping for dinner at x+3 shops and driving an SUV than anything else.

Funny thing was that at the time, your speed on the net was determined by a single T1. There was a default routed route between MCI and Sprintlink, a single T1, as long as you didn't have to traverse that link you were ok. Life was horrible if you had to across that link

Now of course, my modem has better connectivity than the local ISP and my home broadband has better transfer and latency than either place.

There are still some backwaters of the internet, a few years ago I found a university in Russia that was 9.6kb line out for their students (it was a short piece about the current uses of UUCP)

    two 3 1/2 inch floppies
    80/24 CGA (mono) LCD screen.

I used this thing for college, I charged it once a week and never did completely drain them down.

Ah those days, thing weighed a good 9 lbs and had the distintion of having a screen that folded over the keyboard, which in and of itself is not noteable. What was notable was the fact that it felt and sounded like a old car door closing.

  24. Not the first time Kansas AG has acted like this on Kansas AG Rejects Settlement Discs · · Score: 2, Interesting

This purging of objectionable content is censorship -- pure and simple.

This is not to say a person in Kansas can't go buy the material on their own, it's not censorship in the sense of it not being allowed at all (like say Texas in banning sex toys a few years ago).

Kansas AG is a prime example why some types of people should not be in law enforcement, let alone responsible for enforcement of all laws in a state. If a elected official can not seperate their personal beliefs from his official function as a representative of the government, than they should not be in power (A better example is John Ashcroft).

For a little bit of background, in Kansas, with some exceptions, every statewide office by default goes to a Republican unless that canidate goes outside of a loose centrist feel.

Case in point, Dennis Moore, the only democrat from Kansas in the house, ran against Phil Kline, Alan Taft and a few others since being elected. The only way (and this is a subjective observation) he seems to keep beating the republicans is because the local RNC chapter keeps trotting out hard right wingers like Kline to run against him.

Otherwise in Kansas politics, the republican gets it almost every time (the democrats in the kansas house and senate seem to have less power than the democrats in Texas do, at least down there they have the big red button of denying a quorum if absoulutely needed).

Back to the topic / artical .. It would have been more appropriate for these library resources to be presented as is, rather than withheld. If the AG wanted to "make the local library board aware" of some potentially objectionable content would be one thing (though still highly dubious).

Other topic, Kansas politics makes for an interesting read on the way the party not in power has to play ball in the midwest. Like the fact that the democrats didn't even field a canidate during the 2002 Senate race. Or the fact that the (late) prior democrat governor (Kim Finney) had several parts of her platform that were planks in the republican party platform (prolife being primary amoung them).
