  4. Philosophical Depth? on The Politics of Star Trek · · Score: 0

I like Star Trek as much as the next guy, and have seen all of the Original Series, The Next Generation, and Deep Space Nine. I'm currently struggling through Voyager, I've dipped my toe into the Animated Series, and I'm going to at least give Enterprise a shot.

But I wouldn't say Star Trek has much actual philosophical depth. Messages typically boil down to things like "Racism is bad" or "Data is a person too" or "Don't lie" or "Don't pick on Barclay" or "Respect other cultures", and that's ignoring the episodes where Kirk and Spock are running from a witch that turns into a giant cat, or where Geordie accidentally stalks a girl he likes, or Troi goes man-crazy, or Sisko and Crew get trapped in a weird board game.

Sure, there's gems like The Devil in the Dark, Family, and For the Uniform, but those are few and far between.

You mean the demographics haven't undergone a drastic and fundamental shift since the last SV Diversity article from like a month ago?

Those students haven't all gotten the 3-5 years of experience to work at Google, Facebook, Apple, etc all within the last several weeks?

Alrighty, you priviliged micro-aggressive misogynistic cis-gendered white males. You've got 3 more weeks to fix all this, or else we'll post another article complaining that the problem still exists >:-(

The only way home I can think of for Snowden is if someone like Rand Paul ends up as President (not ideal, but there are worse choices):
    1) He seems to genuinely care about civil rights (is against the Patriot Act, use of drones, government surveillance etc), and this would be an opportunity to put his money where his mouth is
    2) Only a Republican would snub President Obama in such a way

Fat chance of that happening, though.

Okay, so it turns out there is no definitive answer on the source of the term "Football". Some people think it's from the fact that you kick the ball with your foot, but others think it's from the fact that you play the game on-foot: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F...

Your post is wrong either way, since Football can in fact refer to Rugby, making our usage of the term totally appropriate.

  25. Re:Thank you for explaining left and right to me(! on Quarks Know Their Left From Their Right · · Score: 2

I also have no idea how football will rotate when it is thrown by an right-handed quarterback .... footballs are meant to be kicked, hence the name.

Football does not refer to which part of the body is supposed to connect with the ball (otherwise it'd be called HeadKneeChestHandFootBall), but rather the fact that the game is played on-foot (as opposed to Polo, another old and popular game).
