Here already telecoms are trying to block municipal Wi-FI and are ardent lobbyists against free for all Wi-Fi. Atleast this will bring ubiquitous Wi-Fi at reasonable cost to masses.
Hope that it really kicks off. I predict once this becomes widespread, telecom/cable companies will have another axe to grind.
The author says that he has "IS Management" experience but obviously he hasn't done these things in the past (ROI justification, Costing etc). So right now his management sees him only as a Cost center (which they will try hard to minimize). Hey they might even consider getting rid of him and contract out for services.
He has to build his case. The first step is to educate in layman's terms what it means to bring about changes. What those changes will achieve in terms of efficiency and productivity gains (his or management's or workers in general).
He has to show what is broken. Obviously if in management's perception everything is running then what is the rationale for bringing about change.
Also he has to keep in mind any change has a big impact. Nothing is too small or trivial. He has to adopt change management practices.
I would first check his credentails before reading his "article". Nowadays all websites are desperate for so called contributors to generate content. Anybody who can spell can become an insta-pundit on matters totally foreign to them. Who is he ? Has he been in IT for long ? Does he have first hand experience with the products he is comparing and editorializing ?. Based on what he wrote, anyone who has a background in IT can dismiss it as full of shit. No need to even discuss
I find Apple mice to be a tad too small. Perfect size for me would be Logitech Mouseman Wheel. Though right now I am using a wireless Microsoft optical mouse.
I wonder why they don't think of people with big hands.
If not for the support of venture capitalists and their money, Jeff would not have seen this day. Very few startup firms have had this kind of support when the venture capitalists stuck with him during the initial years when it was burning money.
For all those people who are saying that this is being done already by MSN and Yahoo, Google has definitely better interface for customizing options. Drag and drop sections, ability to switch on and off verbosity are pluses IMO. Plus it is certainly snappier than either Yahoo or MSN
This is another chance that AMD may be able to beat Intel. I think the main advantage woule be laptops. They will have bragging rights for the first SMP consumer laptop.
I think this is what you are looking for. It is customizable with new feeds being added continuosly. It does not require you to sign or register. Your feed preferences are stored in a cookie.
I wish Slashdot had a this so that when I am done with slashdot, I can go to another tab where I can get a list of new headlines based on my subscriptions. I don't like the boxes, it clutters up the manin page.
We do this because a large part of India is still where the west was centuries ago. Shortage of clean water, primitive communication, small scale inefficient agriculture, etc.
Correct - Many nations took hundereds of years to get where they are now. It is unfair to compare progress with these countries.
It is unfair to compare the progress to other countries. Considering it is just 50-something years since it is independent, it is quite remarkable. Also the term "Third world" is wrong. You can characterize India as "Developing" but certainly not third world.
Right now windows support is via a thrid party software. If Apple releases iTunes for windows they would have more control on the feature set and user interface issues.
Of course how much it will resemble the Mac version would be debatable.
Also this would also mean Windows users would get access to the music catalog for purchase. Wonder if they would force.mac subscription on windows users.
I think the spirit or the idea behind Simputer is a right one. A multilingual simple appliance like information gadget that doesn't need a degree in computer scince to operate or use. This is a simple information appliance designed to ubiqutious, rugged, simple to use even by semi-literate people. Before anyone starts to flame me, this *can* be achieved using a visual interface.
But to brand it as a panacea for all the ills that plague Indians is plain wrong. It is not the magic pill that going to cure all the ills that plague Indian rural dweller. Give it him and what is he going to do about it. Check prices ? Good but what benefit does it bring it to him? In that case a cellphone would be more of a killer app that Simputer.
I think this will be usefull in a Cooperative kind of environment(Farmer's Cooperative, Milk Cooperative etc) where people would get access both to content and the machines.
This should be a wholly subsidised by the advertisers.
Why should anyone pay to download spam out of their own pocket ?. The advertisers are getting a clean optin list without doing anything other than registering with the post office. So instead of being a hit or miss situation they get a fully vetted list of inetrested parties. This is a valueadd proposition for them.
But I don't see any advantage for the users unless the Postal service subsidises teh access or bandwidth.
1. Decoy files I think they will be shortlived on the network. They won't propagate on the network when people realise they are duds.
2. Built in file verification (checksums) Software would evolve to have these features builtin.
3. Blacklisting of nodes Software could evolve to black list these nodes and propagate this list throughout the network. I think this would be the most usefull of all.
4. Ranking trusted node/peer There should be way to rank or flag a node as trusted one by the users who download files from that node. Multiple users flagging would result in RIAA operated nodes sinking to the bottom where they belong.
I would say quite an innovative idea.

This is the most insightful response.

Most probabaly Mac lovers can afford this anyway. He probably find more takers if he had released this for a Mac.

Why in the world would you do this ? The Xserve is already out there.
Sony still doesn't get it.
Betamax : Tried to push its own standard. Failed even though it was superior.
Minidisc : See above
Memory Stick : Again persists on going it alone even though other standards are more popular and widespread (CF and SD)
Sony connect : Lauches its own spin when other established players are already in the market.
Interoperability means nothing to these guys.
This should be at least downloadable free for us .mac subscribers. It would make me want to continue my subscription.

The government has been cracking down on this supposedly spiritual movement. This would surely stoke the fire even more.
I don't why they would want to do this. This is hardly a good public relations move. Smells like a childish prank by some teenagers.
No doubt the most of the Falun Gonger's are mortified by now.
