I was going to start my own post but my experience kind of relates to what you have said.
Here at work I have noticed that when some older IBM machines don't power on properly..
I unplug the power cable from the back of the machine and wait 30 seconds, the power supply makes a kind of discharge sound which hard to explain but you'd know it if you heard it.
Then we just plug the power cable back in and the machine powers on without delay:-)
I know this is a pretty good stab at making a pun but when CmdrTaco says "It's mostly backed up. No huge loss." I get the impression he *had* duped his own data...:-)
I can appreciate that you are just making the comment for alternatives sake, but I think I need to point out that it is still a very mean thing to say.
When it comes to family, a decision like that is most certainly not an option anyone in their right mind considers.
My guess is that you do not have any dependants of your own.
You mean like, going in to the 'Control Panel' / 'Administration Tools', opening 'Services' and then going in to the properties of each Service and changing the 'Startup type' to 'Disabled'?
I am positive I saw something very similar for RedHat and probably SuSE too when I looked at those products.:)
set windows to play a sound eg. c:\sounds\newmail.wav and then have a folder with a number of wave files in it eg. c:\sounds\collection and schedule tasks to copy sounds to c:\sounds\newmail.wav every X minutes/seconds/whatever ?
pretty clunky but relatively simple for the average bear
Would the rate of infection increase dramatically?
That simply *has* to be a typo, you most certainly would expect the rate of infection to decrease quite quickly if everyone had automatic updates enabled...
This strikes me as one of those "duh...." type editorials. I have a deadline... I have to write *something*... Maybe no one will notice if I write about something obvious.

You're on a Mac, have you tried using the iTunes Store?
This is a really good question and I have often wondered it myself.
I am glad someone has finally posed the question to the community at large.
Imagine the renewal of interest in clustering if this were to become reality...
Uh, they've had telnet since Windows 95 - right?
Maybe even earlier with pre-4.0 versions of Windows NT.
I wouldn't call that very recent...
I get the same thing in Microsoft Office Word 2003 :\
You really should watch the trailer, dude.
"automate it" ?
:)

This is the only sane, succinct answer I have read yet.
Congratulations, 758515, you're a star!
Oh, and someone for the love of god please moderate parent up.
we use http://www.webex.com/ at our work, works a treat behind a multitude of firewalls and maybe even proxies if I remember rightly.
:)
you should check it out
What the hell are you talking about?
The article is discussing power over ethernet, not power over IP.
Dude, seriously, are you high?
sounds to me like you know him/her ...
Apparently, Microsoft begs to differ.

Why is it bad for the consumers?
I already handed in my N.E.R.D. card when I fell asleep watching Star Wars many moons ago.
I gotta be honest and say that Star Wars fits nicely into that category and not one of the 'geek' variety.
A slashdotter who did not build his own computer is like a jedi who did not build his own lightsaber.
Do jedi's build their own lightsabers?
No insults mate, just a conclusion that was easilly reached.
Congratulations on your articles.
no.
:)
just shocked

You just about had it, if you read this story:
http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=11011
Basically, he's new there and is writing his first article.
I was shocked to see it on Slashdot, but then what can you do...
weird, I get "host not found" ...
heh heh heh, he said "penetration testing", heh heh heh
In any case, it's important to note that he did not himself share any files.
Suuuuuuuuuuure he didn't, we all believe him...
