where i work, a MAJOR, retail outlet. We simply take a unit off the floor at random, and display it. The manufactor has no choice except to maybe make ALL of the first batch of units we receive better or simply not lie to us. I know this article has to do with review units and not demos but just FYI.
This guy has the right idea. Yeah you could set up a WiFi network across great distances but why? That was probably done under ideal conditions and won't work when raining. If you really need to pass data that far, just stick with the internet. Set up a VPN for security and you will be much more secure and will go greater distances that WiFi could ever be.
I want you to know that if I ever have the need for serious computing power (blades, mid-frame or mainframes), I will give IBM a call right away. This is a great way to not only protect your assets but to build extreme brand loyalty with Linux users. Also, great job with the Linux Prodigy commerical.
No it is pretty hard for find a beige computer these days. Try finding a beige computer at your local Best Buy, you won't. Most PCs are black and grey, sonys are blue-ish purple-ish, and hp are something other than beige too.
you ever see that slider episode where they slide to a dimension where the entire globe is filled with lawyers who are ready to sue for ANY reason. scary huh? not far off from today though.
Any site that sitefinder "helps" you with has a robots.txt file that disallows all agents. I am trying to access an old site of mine that was archived on the WaybackMachine and it won't let me access the old information now. Verisign must be stopped at all cost.
I don't think that you'll see your living room. Either it will only see MOTION (like dopler, or maybe not)and matte out the rest, or it will ask you to step out of frame, take a picture, then when you are back in frame, use a difference matte to only display whatever wasn't originally in the frame. For a demonstration of a diff. matte, load up the Fast and the Furious DVD and check out the special feacture w/ the train scene @ the end.
what does slashdot use for their servers? the site uses a lot of scripting yet rarely has any problems. i know the site runs on slashcode but what is the hardware behind the software?
if one has a range of three feet, imagine what a beowulf cluster of these could do. build it big enough and set them up correctly, we could push the entire population into one area. that is until they adapt at which point we have adjust the sheild harmonics. i'll shut up now.
edward furlong played a neo-nazi in american history x and did an incredible job at it. do yourself a favor and rent it if you have yet to see it. i believe it rated pretty high on imdb and as we all know, they are never wrong. i just don't picture him as the role of john conner anymore. after seeing detroit rock city, he just does seem like he was matured enough for being the run down, always moving, hiding from everything adult the character required.
apple really needs to start making people feel like they get more for the money. i bought might ipod 8 months ago, they have practically discontinued support for it already. with a simple firmware upgrade, i would have playlist on the fly BUT NO. cheap tricks to sell expensive ipods. if apple would get over this bs, i would buy a new macintosh but i am afriad they will release some new technology overnight that will cause them to forget about my 2 month old powermac.
what is so hard about a macintosh computer. you plug it in, turn it on, and if you have a dhcp server, you are done. besides one of the macs is probably running mac os x server, it would only make sense that the grant would offer a complete mac network so it probably is computer ready to use, just set up some users, turn on the computer, log in and you are done. they can give full access to every computer and at the end of the day, the server will wipe the slates clean and be ready for the next day of abuse. the biggest problem would be a hardware failure but apple's instructions on how to replace parts are so thourough that if the "tech" was unable to follow them having never touching a mac before, should not be touching pc's either
it seems like connectix is great at working on software that pisses of some company and then sells the right to it back to that company. think "virtual game station" which was probably the best playstation emulator to date. don't forget the connectix quickcam which used to be a great, simle webcam until the sold it to logitech which made the camera better but the software and drivers such a hassle that i gave up on what use to be a fine product. that is it! the awnser to the second step in the equation
1> shitty product
2> pack in shitty software
3> profit
way off topic but haven't you seen it. give a newbie a stack of aol cds and they think that you're a computer god.
Simply disable Appletalk on the WAN interface, Built-In Ethernet. As long as Robin Hood (think about that one) doesn't use that port for any local AppleTalking, he shouldn't have a problem.
First off, Beta did have the better picture quality. VHS was crap. Done. Second, a person is smart, people are dumb. Done. Third, there wouldn't be a problem between VHS and Betamax or whatever format we are discussing today if companies didn't want not only a piece of the pie, but the whole thing and then some. It really comes down to what was advertised better. VHS was better marketed and pushed in the United States and people have to see what all of their little friends were using. While I'm no clearly no genius, I think this author is just restating the obvious. Do you really think that I'm going to go buy a car that makes no pollution needs no maintanence and costs next to nothing to operate if I am not positive that I can keep its fuel supply (gas diesel, hydrogen, plutonium, etc) loaded today tommarow and into the future? The author is just another person who is happy the fell into the "majority" at the right time. He probably skipped Beta and bought VHS. He thinks Windows is IT and will follow the next fad to the end.
Also, quit your damn complaining about dupes. You all probably don't remember every single article that gets posted to Slashdot nor would you really be able to a day, week or month down the road. The poster appologized but its not like they are going to take it down. That would open up the door to things like "I don't like this comment, drop it." Once they have realized their mistake give it up and read on to the next tidbit.
let's not forget that there is a lot more interference on earth. everything from wifi cards, cordless phone, cell phones and microwave ovens. also the deep space network could probably pick up a wifi connection from mars (if wifi was built to communicate with a 20 minute delay).
This is not an easy or cheap thing to do. First you need to have a company look into the area and analyze all radio stations within a certain distance to try to determine any regulations or interference. Cost : Several thousands Then you need a license from the FCC for a call sign and permission to broadcast at a certain frequency. Cost : Several thousands Then a site permit from the city to set up the equipment as well as permission to transmit near any delicate area (hospitals in some cases) Then you need a license with the RIAA (Music Industry). Cost : Tens of thousands a year Then you need a transmitter, aerial (antannae), cable (even cheap cable is expensive), and installation. Cost : Tens of thousands Then mixer, limiter, cables, computer, mics. (Low end is around $1000) Then you need the music. Not only do you have to pay the RIAA a bunch of money, but they make you buy the discs too. Sometimes you will get free radio promos from music that will soon be released. Then don't forget to factor in electricity for the equipment, transmitter, cooling.
I don't mean to squash your dreams but I seriously looked into this plus I got several chance to visit a radio station, KESO on South Padre Island. If any of you visit the island, you probably have heard it "92.7, the valley's only alternative". Their situation is very starange, to me at least. They buy most of their programming from somewhere else, then mix it with their stuff and broadcast it by microwave to Port Isabel to the FM transmitter. They have a pretty short range yet it is still expensive to run.
You might hear people talking about pirate radio stations. Keep in mind that unless you load the equipment in a van and constantly drive around, you will be caught sooner or later, plus you only will have a range of a couple of miles.
I bought mine at Best Buy for about $150 and have been very happy with it. The longest it has taken to process a page after it warms up from energy saver mode it about 4 seconds. Then I really do get 12ppm. The quality on toner saver mode is decent and you can get anywhere from 2500 to 3500 prints per $70 cartridge. It has great Linux support with both the parallel and USB interface on the unit. I used to be afraid to printe ANYTHING with my old canon bubblejet since I was only getting about (seriously) 20 prints on a $10 tank even at the lowest quality. Now I print up entire anandtech articles to bind and later review when I don't have a computer handy. Which by the way, I have to really thank anandtech for creating awesome articles and makeing it so easy to print them I have a binder full of them neatly organized for quick access anywhere I am, even at work where we have one internet enabled computer for about 100 employees. Weird thing is that I work in a computer store.
Yes, you can use the memory from your video card as a fast storage medium. Some of you are saying that you can store files to swap around and stuff like that, video card memory is just like system memory, it goes away when turning off. Sure you can use the firmware storage but there is generally little left after you store the firmware. Then, NO, it won't increase your system memory. If you have 128 MB RAM you still will have only 128 MB of RAM. You just will have a temporary disk where you can then create a swap partition. Kinda like adding memory if you swap a lot but technically, you will still only have 128MB RAM. Finally if you have a 128 MB video card you will probably only get 127 MB of space from it since the card still needs memory for important things like video.

Imagine media's mags are much better than anything elses. The book itself is very well printed, stands up to water damage nicely and don't feel flimsy. They try to be a little funny at times but once you are past that, their articles are fairly well written. Even better, between several imagine publications that I current or at one time recevied, I generally agree with their reviews which is gives important to me given that I sell computers and accessories at a local Major computer store, yes the one that you can't turn on the tv for 10 minutes without seeing.
They also once published a Linux magazine but that went under to poor subscriptions. It was a decent magazine for novice users but also had articles for advanced users as well.
MacAddict really has to be one of the best Macintosh magazines (on par with MacWorld) altough I really miss the old publishing staff.

In conclusion, I forgot the real point of this. I know imagine doesn't also have giant websites that everybody visits and never had a TV network (wasn't TechTV at one time ZDTV), but if you are going to publish magazine, make sure they are damn good.
Try with the education discount. Either that or they are copying Dell by changing prices for different customer within a short time period. I think that was a Slashdot article a while back.
While both units cost the same, if you want the Windows version to be engraved, it will cost an aditional $79 while the Mac version only costs $49. Either Apple is trying to pull a fast one or the price of engraving is going up an will change by the time the Windows version ships.
Just read Apple's knowledge base. If you turn off the Automatic iPod update in the iTunes control panel, you can COPY the music to the iPod from several Macs. You cannot copy the music back to the computer though without third party software.
