For those of us who don't have BiasGoggles on and can actually read bylines, we see the article was written by CNET News.com.
It could have been written by Dr. Suess, that's not my point. The point is that MSN is predicting the death of an audio format that is WMA's rival. Try reading a little McLuhan; The medium sometimes is the message.
The Scottsdale residents have UHF video cameras in their bedrooms, and are concerned with people driving around with portable UHF TV's and watching them have wild monkey sex.
A-fucking-men.
I'm not gay (not that there's anything wrong with it) but seeing each parent trying to offer an analogy and failing miserably... this one hit it on the head! Please mod me down as redundant:)
"Fundamental to the functioning of CSMA/CA is the Clear Channel Assessment (CCA) procedure, used in all standards-compliant hardware and performed by a Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) physical (PHY) layer.
I knew those evil corporate bastids were behind this somehow!!;)
Yes, but with this hack, it requires the PC video be in the same room as the TV, or you have a really really long cable run... making this kind of a ho-hum addon.
Less carriers means less competition means higher prices.
In the end, it's the consumers who will lose out with this consolidation of mobile providers.
You are an idiot. Verizon is the 300 lb. gorilla in the US cell market. They have no serious competition. It's either go with Verizon and deal with their moronic selection of phone hardware, or go Cingular/ATT/TMobile and deal with call dropouts and moronic billing and customer support.
Some real competition for Verizon is a Good Thing to keep them honest.... Can you hear me now Verizon? Where's my Treo600 now, you CDMA bitches?:)
Don't worry, I doubt this technology will ever see the light of day... or if it does, it will remain cost-prohibitive for regular consumers.
Too many people have way too much to loose if this becomes the standard like 802.11 has. In any urban or suburban areas, image how many Wifi hotspots there are within 50km... or even 25km.
Cell providers and ISP's are going to fight this every step of the way because of the competition this could pose... with the right hardware. How long before we see 802.14 VoIP handsets sold on thinkgeek?;)
For Windows users, Winamp is probably the best example I can think of. Take a stable, usable, simple and elegant audio player (Winamp2) and fuck it up by writing it from scratch (Winamp3), then ultimately abandon that clusterfuck rewrite in favor of yet another rewrite (Winamp5) that fixes what they fucked up with Winamp3.
I'm mighty happy sticking with Winamp2, thank you very much.
film is finally going to go the way of the dinosaur
...and likely, so will my Dad's job in Rochester, NY.
Bravo, Kodak, for shifting more jobs offshore and to Mexico, where you can pay employees $2 a day.
I wonder what this will do to the "as American as baseball and apple pie" corp image Kodak has fostered for the past 100 years. Will consumers turn their back on Kodak like Kodak has on it's American workforce?
I think the RIAA will just go back to their Congressional, Sonny Bono-style minions on Capitol Hill to get this "fixed", and we will have another silly DMCA II law that covers this situation.
You have a "Lessig for President" sticker on your hybrid, don't you?;)
Spectrum is not crowded, it's a myth that the US Government likes pushing... What's the allocation between 230 and 400MHz? How about the 500-800MHz range? Look out for the black helicopters!
In all seriousness, I'm intersted in what allocation was assigned to this new technology.

MSN is reporting the death of a rival format of WMA? Wow, there's a shocker!

I first read the artile title as 'Virus Creators Sharing Morse Code' --- As a ham radio operator, I was appalled. First BPL, now this! :)
Seriously... ok, not. Seriously though, at least I can pay for my RV for Bonnaroo now! :)

They should give SETI@Home a call... SETI could have had that data processed in 3 work units!
No, what I'm saying is they took a perfectly stable and functional piece of software, and tried to make it 'better' by doing a complete rewrite.
It wasn't broke, why did they try to fix it?

Bah, who cares about Real? Isn't everyone only interested in the new music store and hardware players Microsoft will announce at CES? ;)
Flamebait?!? What, are the Michael Jackson fans going to come out of the woodwork and hijack the thread?
:)
You know you laughed!
But too old for Michael Jackson. Go ahead, mod me down! Muahahaha! ;)
Noone else sees the irony of naming a filesharing network MUTE?

What the article doesn't say is that the "patch" just removes IE and installs Mozilla. :)

I now watch less tv because getting my slimp3 up and running is easier then turning the tv on and hunting for something to watch.
;)
You don't own a TiVo, do you?
