First thing... the Xbox is not going to replace the pc market. It is going to play games... and there will always be a market for PCs. There are businesses out there that have to buy PCs. Programmers that have to bu PCs. Server people that have to buy servers.... hooked up to PCs.
If the computer revolution has taught us anything, it is that computers got more complex, interchangeable, and personlized. In the beginning you had Texas Instruments and Commodore. Now how many technology manufacturers are there? You theory is that the marketplace will become less diverse. People will all line up to get the same system... under someone else's idea of what services they want. That is insane. People have been bucking M$ for years. And their product does pracitcally anything the user friendlies want on their computer.
This topic alone is counter to your argument.
There you show your Xbox, the universal computer replacement, and IN DAYS people are already customizing it. Making it more diverse. Making it to their liking. Cracking it. They aren't lining up to do all the same things, they're breaking out.
So the ideas that everyone will be planting the Xbox4 in the bowels of their home next to the washing machine is preposterous. The world will never dance to the tune of one drummer forever.
...In science fiction. larry Niven wrote about using lasers to communicate with other ships out in the solar system via a series of sattelites that had "relatively fixed" position relative to the solar system. It was for his "Gil the ARM" series and others. And that was a while back.
Ver precise, and even better, incapable of intercepting transmissions. Good to see this coming to light. "Weeeeery eeenteresting."
Of course, when are we going to see this technology used to guide in laser guided bombs and missiles from sattelite? Or, do we already have it and we don't know about it?
Hey international kids! Wanna Troll for Americans? WELL, STEP RIGHT UP! This is the inflammatory thread for YOU!
Here, uh, I'll start it up...
You think you're perfect! Take that, George! You export crap culture! Annnd your women are fat! They make bad television like Ricky Lake!
Take that yankee swine! You son of a motherless goat!
Honestly, in the last two days it feels like/. has been invaded by petulant Europeans that sit around all day and moan.
The internet became public because there was a need for public mass computing. That is now in place. So why would we need a second system? Necessity is the mother of invention. The Gov't needs a secure network. They will invent a new one. We won't need a secure network, so the only people that will invade it are spies.
The fact of the matter is that Europeans always seem to get on these boards and bash Americans... constantly speaking of the ways that Americans think themselves superior. Wow. According to many American bashers, it appears to me that you think of us as the biggest bastards on the earth. What a sad statement.
You have to be pretty arrogant to assume that you understand what others think automatically.
I have a better answer to all of this... it would be best to ASK THEM WHAT THEY THINK.
You might be surprised that all Americans don't think ill at all of others or behave superior (after all this is America), and some actually respect and admire some European practices.
My only opinion about Europeans is that when reading text in their non-native languages is that they can't properly relate humor, which admittedly is a problem in all text. So let me say this:
Americans tease. They poke fun. The Brits get it because they are culturally close to us. Poking fun at (and especially humbling) are our ways. From the outside it no doubt looks like direct insult. I don't think that I have ever laughed at other cultures jokes. Its hard to get what they mean. It is even harder to grasp a foreigners sense of humor. Anglos, like Native Americans, tease mercilessly. Its just bound to piss you off if you realize that they are smiling behind that.
So if you're French... keep Jerry Lewis.:).
And if you're German... keep the tiny pistol away from me.
And for God's sake, keep smiling, this thread started by taking about the internet and government work.
"THANK YOU HARRY POTTER BOOKS! I wuz a danged eeeelliterate fool until a buuk about witchcraft and demons and such came a-long. Now I am a makin' big bucks as a NASA sciuntist."
Honestly, if I can't believe I hear parents saying that they have a problem with their kids on the internet reading and typing. Information non-stop from various unique viewpoints and places is wrse than a book? Wow. Then they slap themselves on the back for handing them a fun book. Yes, give them a book, reading is better than that evil, illiterate, thought-provoking internet. Please get a clue parents. Books are great. The internet is great too. I personally love both of them. But books are getting a little nostalgic for modern kids, when they can interact now.
The internet is one BIG BOOK that talks back to you.
To be on the net, you have to read constantly. Think and interact. Type. Most book people love the net. Its a beautiful thing. We are all reading right now, discussing, and this is our pastime. Wow. Think about that. I love books too. Before a computer network came along, reading was in a pile WAY OVER THERE . The common man now has a keyboard out 24/7. A typewriter used to be stored in a case in the closet, so you could use it for Christmas cards and official documents. After all, my parents used carbon paper. Typing was something your secretary did.
WE NEED A SENSE OF PERSPECTIVE. I am 27. When I was in high school in the late 80's/early 90's, there were typing classes. Probably still are. It was a learned skill... people were ACTUALLY INTIMIDATED by a keyboard. People sought out typing as a class to be placed on a resume. How many people do you think are now intimidated by a typewriter now? It is now basic to children. They have E-mail accounts now. If they have to type a lot, betcha they have to read. Kids are doing a lot of typing and a lot of reading. It is REALLLY GETTTING BETTER, not worse. They are reading a lot more EVERYWHERE. That makes them smarter.
Don't get me wrong. I LOVE BOOKS. I read a lot. But the fear that your kids are not going to read and end up as dumbasses is a hilarious parenting fear. Ridiculous fear. My mother told me that she used to read the Encyclopedias when she was bored. I did too. Kids practiaclly educate themselves. The computer is more than just a big set of encyclopedias. They are begging to learn. Harry Potter books didn't change that.
The last time I checked, my parents were better educated than my grandparents, and I am better educated than my parents. Does everyone see a pattern here?
I know I am going out on a limb, but a good childrens book series is not going to save all of our kids from barbarism and illiteracy. It isn't going to happen now anyway. We are so heading away from barbarism that it is funny to see parents freak out over one series of books. I personally love to see them humilitate their kids in front of news cameras with those silly outfits. JUST LET THEM BE KIDS! Don't put some giant spin on it.
Pay up America, or you can't walk into the building. RIIIIGHT.
What are they going to do? Kick us out of New York? Tell us that we can't get to have a seat next to all of the Gov'ts we prop up by giving free grain and huge, enourmous, fat foreign aid checks to?
The biggest fiasco in the UN in the last twenty years was the fact that Butros got up and said, "You are a despicable bunch of deadbeats. Pay your bill." They were BEGGIN' for it. We almost had all of our senators pass a resolution to make the US diplomatic corps walk out on the UN. That is the equivalent of a sales department publicly attacking its biggest client. Sheer suicide. It was something to say the UN is larger than the US or the nations that pay into it... when it is simply the diplomatic corps THAT WE SET UP to keep the peace.
The UN needs to shut up. It is simply a forum for bitching, and definitely not there to really solve anything... except let spoiled leaders feel important so they don't have to take it out on their people.
And your idea about the UN getting an international tax is horrible. I am not paying a UN tax. They will have to beat me into the ground and pull my wallet out first. NO WAY. Have you seen where the money goes on most foreign aid? To the rich. None of the money gets to the poor. It buys big air conditioned buildings for the international aid groups, and no one notices.
Question. Where have you ever seen a shitty, run-down RED CROSS building? Those people are farting through silk. Give them time, not money, remember, labor can't be spent on promotional pen and pencil sets.
A tax for the UN lets all of the Emirs, Kings, Politcal Poobahs, and all of the other less reputable world leaders spend more of our money on their hobbies... you know, polo ponies, big boats, lavish vacations, and chasing international supertail. NO FUCKING WAY AM I GIVING THEM MONEY.
THEY WILL NOT GOVERN ME. The USA has enough problems in its system keeping up with the common man. I if I want input, I'll be taking it from a fucking democracy. If they let me personally VOTE in the UN, then I might cough up. Otherwise it is taxation without representation.
Everyone knows how Americans feel about that. The UN is not the great democracy that they speak of.
The UN should stay as a diplomatic service. The Earth's Big Club. I am not going to be listening to any speech on a bill from the "Distinguished Gentleman from Pakistan." Not when they allow psychotic schools in their borders designed for dirty tactics against my nation, or any other nation. FUCK THAT ONE WORLD GOV'T IDEA. Its no good. Most nations can't treat their own people fairly. I am not being governed by them.
I am a news photojournalist in local TV. I have a good friend of mine that was refused a reading on his PhD FOR THREE YEARS by the University that he came from. The reason that he didn't get his PhD was because he didn't do their "scud work" (free work you will do that has the professors name on it, a kind of student labor extortion for MOSTLY grad students) after he spent years setting up charitable television trusts, and all sorts of other financial benefits for the University with television legislation (his speciality).
Because he was in limbo there... he left to take a prof job at another university. After three years, he still didn't have his doctorate. They second university fired him per policy, and he could never teach again after his reputation was tarnished. Then the University gave him his doctorate. Convenient? Hunh? He lost money and tenure. "Well, the first university TECHNICALLY DID GIVE HIM HIS DOCTORATE." See? Case closed. All because of some political crap after years of service to the university.
There is a bright side to this. He sued after years of complaint. It took a decade in federal court. He just finally won after probably ten years.
Now, the angry, stupid university that screwed him so much has to pay his court costs FOR TEN YEARS AND THE DIFFERENCE ON WHAT HE WOULD HAVE MADE AS A PROF... AND DAMAGES. Ka-Ching. He's set now.
Moral of the story? Don't ever fuck with someones future because of personal reasons. Especially under the banner of a large, overfunded, state-run University.
He had a slimy, slimy lawyer that is good at what he does. And you know what? I could have kissed that little bastard when I heard that my friend won. I now see the purpose of dirty little lawyers from their perspective.
Honestly, my friend is a nice, talkative, funny, goofy guy that never did anything wrong but refuse to sign over his name to a lazy prof who felt the urge to constantly innovate, and look at the trouble it caused. It ruined all of his plans... BUT HE GOT EM BACK. Now he can teach, but I don't think he wants to anymore.
He finally got married to his sweetie and bought a house. He's finally a happy, albeit older, man now. And his life is finally better.
I would say actually quite a bit. See the problem is not only the patent, it is the political fallout that occurs after it.
Many of these students have their academic careers ruined. Why? Because in my limited experience, university staff are the most backbiting people on earth. They have precious little job experience in the outside world that would harden them from an occasional failure and give them a painful lesson about screwing others over, and the only way to climb is to eat others alive.
Besides, to them, you are just another college student. I was never in Grad school, but this was even the way I felt with profs who knew me on a first name basis.
Ahh, but the IRA didn't attack us, now did they? So then there is a difference? Is there not? You see. The IRA is disarming because they know their money is about to dry up from the United States, a place that used to fund them through Boston. But unfortunately, there is little they can do without money. See, they have to get jobs now, and that takes precious time out of planning the murder of police officers.
Anymore, they are just the Irish Mob with a political agenda. They're done for. Not too many Americans will be supporting a group of people that are labeled as terrorists in the USA. Which is what they are.
If you're so f'n smart, how do we support and fix these social ills? By propping up nice regimes? Is there such a thing as a nice Gov't in that part of the world? Is there anything that even resembles a real Gov't in that part of the world, and not some spoiled oil princes on polo ponies?
Nice totalitarian leaders and kings?
That is the problem with that part of the world. Yes. We'll start addressing that problem. Once YOU find us a way to easily do it. Considering that the CIA, FBI, Interpol, all the nations of the world, and the people who have studied Arabic cultures all of their lives can't find a way to reason these people into peace. Yes, there has to be another way. You're a fucking idiot.
Dear God! I live in a country where ignorant masses have free speech (GASP)!!! Help! Get me to a country like France, that gave us the idea of Liberty from Tyranny (TM) and then abandoned it because it was no longer convenient to their causes. I mean, Americans only repaid the Liberty debt in full in WWII, doing something for freedom that a prepared army in their homeland couldn't do.
Or send me to England! Where they are so eccentric with their laws that they don't know which way is up! Where people pass their House of Lords seats to their heirs, who have no responsibility to their constituents!
Or how about anywhere else in Europe?! Where I can live to see how organized and positive force they are... when I have to watch what I say and change currencies every three meters!
Pardon me while I gag. These nations invent important laws and freedoms and then they abandon them. It is pathetic to see anyone tell me that legally America is wrong for allowing freedoms.
Certainly Free Speech to you is not free at all. You are thinking free of all responsibility.
That is not the case. With freedoms come enourmous responsibilities. You can get punished in many ways around the law for offensive speech. That is a better way to do it. Let free speech be out there, you face the personal consequences for your actions and statements, nto enforcing a no hate zone... because I remember in ancient times the only place where free speech wasn't available, was in the presence of a king or his troops.

I didn't say that I wanted genocide. That is a real stretch to infer that I even wanted violence out of this. I said that we should have never listened to them. We should not ever pay attention to racists. By my opinion of that alone, we shouldn't listen to the Israelis, because they are just as hateful and racist.
We should put in place a method to protect ourself in that region, and then we should walk away from both parties involved. And definitely stop giving anyone money for guns. I am not a troll, I have been talking about this for years before the first intifada. So, I see what is going on, and I realize that this is a challenge to the very fabric of civilization... a challenge that we can't lose.
You apparently missed that whole 4 people having fun with Goldeneye-Mario Party-Mario Kart thing. Too bad. Made a lot of friends with people who aren't excited by cartoon characters that are about pump action shotguns and cleavage.
Oh, and Grand Tourismo sucks. It always will, no matter how many versions. It is never fun obsessing about car decals and shock absorbers when you should be racing with four of your friends AT THE SAME TIME... WITHOUT TWO SEPERATE MACHINES AND TWO SEPERATE TELEVISIONS.
I may be a Nintendo fanboy, but I even thought that the mighty Metal Gear on Playstation had some gameplay issues... mostly not being able to see more than 3 feet without using a "look" button. What a horrible design.
I would suggest Commandos 2 instead of Metal Gear anything.
The main thread says that the payment system is all wrong because it is not out for the human interest in the world. I find that to be hilarious as a newsman in the world. The strongest defenders of freedom are your newspeople... and they do care about the world. Even Katie Couric has to spend insanely intense amounts of time away from her family and friends to do a morning show... not for the money, for you... because TV is a hard life.
The fact that the networks send out crews all over the world for two hours in the morning, and a huge half hour in the afternoon of news provided by them across the globe. If you think that free television is hitting you with crap, then ask Bernard Shaw about getting bombed in Baghdad, or any of the about 25 journalists that lose their lives doing their jobs every year to inform you of human rights violations, to tell you the TRUTH ABOUT OTHER HUMANS THAT THE PSYCHOTIC REGIMES DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW.
Also, the other post. You like Farscape because it is one of the first SF shows that doesn't focus on technology, it focuses on character. The "other idiot" people that you speak of are actually people that prefer watching human emotion and interaction instead of spaceships. Just because they are different, doesn't mean they are idiots.

Most net people get their news from Jo-Blo's site. THAT IS WHERE THE BIAS COMES FROM.
Jo-Blo. Not the other things. Most of the bias that you see in journalism is cultural bias that occurs on all sides of the fence.
Or are there strict restrictions on those behaviors too?
Personally though, I think that China should have called the internet "online opium."
