  1. Alas, the mini doesn't do the right rez. for TVs on Top Apple Rumors, Bricks, Low Price, NVIDIA · · Score: 1

I've got a mini connected to my HD LCD TV via DVi->HDMI cable, and I love it - it offers far more flexibility than an AppleTV, although you sacrifice usability. I tend to VNC into it from my laptop, whereas the AppleTV UI is designed to be operated via the simple remote. Unfortunately iTunes won't let you download HD content to a desktop machine, only AppleTV units are allowed that privilege. There also appears to be an issue with the integrated graphics card/processor which means it doesn't output the correct resolution, so you get black borders (the output doesn't fill the entire screen) http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en-gb&q=mac+mini+tv+borders&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 If anyone knows how to solve this I'd be glad to hear about it.

Weirdly, Apple have decided that modems are now optional extras on Laptops. That makes sense for the iMac - but not on a PowerBook.

I happened to read this article during the breaks in the latest ep. of Enterprise (here in the UK, that is) - I read the joke about captains banging green girls - and then it turns out this epsiode is about a trio of green girls (one of which appears to be seducing Dr. Sam Beckett right now.. ) That is weird..

OK, a droid as a General - I have no problem with. A droid with lungs and a cough - Right.... maybe there could be some benefit to the organic lungs. I'll buy that for now. A droid with lungs that gets itself sucked into space as an escape route and appears to suffer no ill-effects. Sorry, not buying that.

  10. Motorola on Major Hangups Over the iPod Phone · · Score: 3, Insightful

I've seen a lot of mobile phones - I'm in the UK - and they've been prevalent for over a decade now. One of the things that amazes me about them is this: 1 - Motorola can't make good ones. 2 - That doesn't seem to stop people buying Motorola phones. I always warn people not to buy Motorola - they are always buggy and frequently crash completely (i.e. lock-up and require rebooting.) Yet they always buy them, and regret it a few months down the line. I think it has something to do with the form-factor - people couldn't get enough of the star-tac and that was awful. I'm not surprised that they're having problems with the phone - I bet it'll be a dog once it's released as well.

I got one for christmas - and love it. But it does have a few drawbacks:
    • Reception can be very poor unless you use the (included) USB extender, and I find, that for some reason, it gets best reception when the USB cable is hanging vertically. (attaching headphones to the socket seems to make little or no difference.)
    • No AppleScript support. I've had to hack up some nasty GUI scripts that require both the name and the frequency of the station hard-coded. (yuk)
    • No RDS (minor niggle)

I run WordPress and used to get hit by many casino/cialis spams. I found that I get no comment spam after using a WP hack (http://www.gudlyf.com/index.php?p=376) called AuthImage, which is a CAPCHA (basic Turing test based on character recog.) I strongly recommend it, and would be grateful to any OSS vigilante who could port it to a proper WP plug-in.
