This article is old! I read it 2 days ago and the date on it is Nov 30th. I use to come to slashdot to get links to exciting articles but lately it seems many of the stories I've already read.
So why is this? Is it because slashdot it getting too many articles submitted (and/or not enough staff)? It would be interesting to read an article from the Editors about how the whole process works (and get suggests from the audience).
One suggestion I'd have is delete submissions from the previous day and start anew.
Where did you get the information that Perl 5.8 isn't in Debian Sid? On my Debian Unstable system:
perl -version
This is perl, v5.8.2 built for i386-linux-thread-multi
Also, stable is supposed to be stable, i.e like Red Hat Linux's Enterprise products. The only times things should change is for security updates. Debian Sid, doen't need any security patches, it's a constantly changing system with packages updated often and with the security fixes that folk worry about.
The Debian version that may have security issues is Debian Testing, because U can't use Debian stable security patches on it, and new packages that make it into Sid won't get into testing until they've been in Sid for 6 (?) weeks.
Also, your post sounds much like a troll, very well done I might add.:p
You can get X 4.3 for unstable, using the experimental (which I'm using on my laptop). Add the following to your sources.list:
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian../project/experimental main contrib non-free
(Should one line) And apt-get your way to X 4.3!
Luck

If you give your staff a bonus of $1500 they may be miffed, after taxes they might be left with about $850 or so. Which is probably ~= 1 weeks pay. So for busting their asses all year to earn you a profit you give them an extra weeks pay!
With bonuses unless it is a substantial amount of ones yearly salary it may have the reverse of the intended effect. In that it may give your staff the impression of "is that all I'm worth?" Especially, if your dealing with well paid professionals.
Some of the posts had some great ideas, like the techie gifts for work; great chairs, LCD screens.. or personal gifts, such as the Ipods or gifts certs for some fancy shop.
Or, (and this is may favourite) offer people an additional week of paid holidays/vacation. Now that's a great bonus, paid additional time off: "you've all done a great job and worked hard we'll give everyone a week off from Xmas (or Dec 25th for non-Christians) to New Years". Plus, you'll get an some extra time off yourself!
Last time I was in Virgin Records I was ready to buy 4 cd's. This added up to $18.99x4=$75.96+5% sales tax!
I though about it for a minute and bought nothing. Yes, nothing.
So approx eighty bucks for four cd's, let me say that again, EIGHTY bucks for four new CD's. Eighty f**king bucks, no way man.
Since then I've been buying most of my CD's used online for the past year for less than a tenner. And I've been buying more because their cheaper (and cheaper than most of the local used record stores).
The only way the record companies, and stores, are going to keeps sales up is the lower prices and improve the quality of the music being released.
I suspect that people don't mind registering at sites if they feel it's worth it.
But, when one is casually reading a story on slashdot (or other sites) and to get the full context I need to register to access the story linked to is a real pain. If the editors took the time to find alternative sources to include it would be helpful.
Plus, Slashdot links to the NYTimes so often why don't become a partner like google does?
"It's a stupid registration form. Just lie if you don't want them to know who you are..."
Could be pain having to do this everytime I read slashdot from a computer that isn't my own!
Looks like CmdrTaco doesn't read the slashdot front page?

I agree, an intro as to what Fresco is would have been useful. And would probably have saved the owners of http://www.fresco.org/ loads in bandwidth costs.
I'd suggest that the slashdot editors consider a brief introduction on each article or lay down some guidelines when posting articles so readers aren't doing a lot of headscratching.
Luck!
"I dropped them for a dsl provider that supports linux, lets me run whatever I wish, and supplies a static IP address, all for less than what I was paying before."
Who is you DSL provider? I've been trying to find a decent inexpensive one in Boston that allows one to run servers.
I have a Linux Unleashed book with Redhat 4.2. If your in the Boston area I'll burn you a copy and I'll give it to you. Reply to this if you want a copy.
What would politicians know about being bullied? Most of them would probably have been the bullies, or conformists in the worst way. And politicians themselves are conformists, how many of them actually come up with original ideas? Most of them just seem to sputter back the garbage opinions we see on the common meda. Think about it, whom do you know/remember from high school that was on the student union or council? My apoligises to the poltician whom is not like this. (I can't honestly believe there is more than one)
"Yet a vastly greater number kill themselves because of their peers."
It's not in the headlines and the mass of peoples are not aware of it, so it is a non-issue among politicians. It will become an issue when the people or media make it one that deserves the concern it needs.
Sounds like a Muppet Show sketch.
The client software sucks the big one, but they're well supported and support the features need to record and monitor user's chats per the SEC.

to make it worse than the original!
wankers!
Simple, only allow password protected ZIP files. Won't solve all of your problems, but it will still allow your users to receive needed files.

Do you have a link to the boxes you used or a catalogue number? Thanks Mick
Why post articles that require a registration?

For most US readers, I'd suggest searching for Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, or UK radio stations or just listen to blazznet: http://www.bmbient.demon.co.uk/blazznet/index.htm
