  1. What happened? on Apple Dumps the Cube · · Score: 2

Maybe Apple realized that they are supposed to be a computer company, not an art company. They have been focusing on the design of the box rather than what is inside, and unfortunately, people loved it with the iMac.

Whenever I see a pre-built computer these days, they always have cases with extra useless decoration and crap on the inside.

3rd: The memory gave out. There was no memory at all working, the BIOS wouldn't even give signal to the monitor.

  8. Re:Taco's Comment on Asus Dropping See Through Drivers · · Score: 1

I am going to talk about the Half-Life engine because that is definitely the most popular online FPS with Counterstrike and all the other mods... Some of this probably goes for other Quake engine games too....

1.) A precomputation phase IS done as part of the map compile. It is called VIS, and it works like you say.

2.) There are still parts of the map that are drawn but not shown on the screen. For example, if you can see into part of a room the engine may draw much more of the room that you cannot see without cheating. Part of this is the engine, and part of it can come from bad mapping (this also can lead to low framerates on a poorly designed map).

3.) There is another problem: Entity Brushes: these are things like doors, elevators, or anything with translucent or transparent textures. They are not included in the VIS process. This means that when you stand outside a closed door the engine will draw whatever is behind the door. The see through hack would let you see through the door.

4.) It depends on the game how great an advantage this would be. You won't be able to see the whole map and spy on everyone. If you are lucky you will be able to see a few extra areas, and you definitely will see through doors and such. This won't be a great advantage in something like TFC, where a seconds warning won't make much difference (except perhaps for snipers...), but for something like Counterstrike where one hit often kills AND you can shoot through walls it can ruin the game...

Cell phones of today (or at least a few years ago) are easily scanned too.. The problem is that you need a pre-cell phone era scanner, since the government forbid the manufacture of scanners that could listen to cell phones. I had an old one I found at a tag sale....

The frequencies are in the 800 mhz, I seem to remember 865 mhz but I am not at all sure. The scanner eventually got broken, but I did get to listen into some people... Once I caught someone's phonesex :P.

I am not sure how it is now with all the digital cell phones and what not... Some at least probably have encryption or just don't transmit anything that a human would understand without another cell phone at the end decoding it.

  24. This would be good if schools had good admins... on K12Linux + LTSP = .edu Terminal Server Distro · · Score: 1

Kids would definitely learn a lot more about computers from using Linux than Windows....

When I was about 7 I had a C128 (pretty much the same as a C64), and that thing taught me a lot about computers, since as soon as you turned it on you were at the BASIC interpreter, and you HAD to learn at least some of the language (LOAD "*",8,1) to even use the programs you had on the 5.25" disks....

The problem is that the admins in most schools don't know anything.... I am pretty sure that the admin at my school has never touched anything outside of Windows or Mac, and I know for a fact (from finger) that he has never used his username on the school's FreeBSD firewall.

The security is a joke, he has it set so you automatically log on to the network with the same username and password that you use to log on to windows... including his own account, and a quick search for "PWL crack" on Google got me his password so I now have as much control over the network as him without even having to learn the first thing about Netware....

This guy would not be able to set up anything Linux. Once he saw me telnet'ing to my home computer and it was obvious on his face that he had no idea what I was doing...

I think that most of the admins who are good are going to end up working at a company and not a school...
