Maybe Apple realized that they are supposed to be a computer company, not an art company. They have been focusing on the design of the box rather than what is inside, and unfortunately, people loved it with the iMac.
Whenever I see a pre-built computer these days, they always have cases with extra useless decoration and crap on the inside.
My mom bought an eMachines box for my little brother...
1st: The Modem gave out. Emachines sent a replacement that NEVER worked. Bought another one.
2nd: Power Supply started blowing fuses quick as i could replace them. Bought a new one.
3rd: The memory gave out. There was no memory at all working, the BIOS wouldn't even give signal to the monitor.
They are real POS's.

I believe the original poster was proposing establishing a permanent colony on Mars, where the colonists could live out their life there but not return to Earth, not sending a suicide mission to Mars.
I am going to talk about the Half-Life engine because that is definitely the most popular online FPS with Counterstrike and all the other mods... Some of this probably goes for other Quake engine games too....
1.) A precomputation phase IS done as part of the map compile. It is called VIS, and it works like you say.
2.) There are still parts of the map that are drawn but not shown on the screen. For example, if you can see into part of a room the engine may draw much more of the room that you cannot see without cheating. Part of this is the engine, and part of it can come from bad mapping (this also can lead to low framerates on a poorly designed map).
3.) There is another problem: Entity Brushes: these are things like doors, elevators, or anything with translucent or transparent textures. They are not included in the VIS process. This means that when you stand outside a closed door the engine will draw whatever is behind the door. The see through hack would let you see through the door.
4.) It depends on the game how great an advantage this would be. You won't be able to see the whole map and spy on everyone. If you are lucky you will be able to see a few extra areas, and you definitely will see through doors and such. This won't be a great advantage in something like TFC, where a seconds warning won't make much difference (except perhaps for snipers...), but for something like Counterstrike where one hit often kills AND you can shoot through walls it can ruin the game...
I remember seeing more free hours in a month than there are in the month of February (800 Free Hours I think...)
More Recently I think I've seen 1500 Free Hours in 2 months or 1000 Free Hours in 1.5 Months... Annoying as hell... But at least now you get a free DVD Case... It was annoying when they switched from floppies to CDs because I had grown use to a steady supply of free floppies...
Cell phones of today (or at least a few years ago) are easily scanned too.. The problem is that you need a pre-cell phone era scanner, since the government forbid the manufacture of scanners that could listen to cell phones. I had an old one I found at a tag sale....
The frequencies are in the 800 mhz, I seem to remember 865 mhz but I am not at all sure. The scanner eventually got broken, but I did get to listen into some people... Once I caught someone's phonesex:P.
I am not sure how it is now with all the digital cell phones and what not... Some at least probably have encryption or just don't transmit anything that a human would understand without another cell phone at the end decoding it.
Seriously, it lowered my faith in the human race how many people seriously started believing the moon race was a hoax based on one TV show... And then they call me stupid when I tell them that the show is a load of crap...
I have on occasion dialed into the HVAC system of the school my Dad works at, to save him from having to go there and turn on the air conditioning or heating for some special occasion or something.
The connection was over a 1200 bps modem but it was good enough...
Try Baldur's Gate II... It's what Diablo II would be if Diablo II didn't suck.
There is still some good work going on... The aforementioned BGII, a nice RTS called Sacrifice, very innovative, all the mods for Half-Life (a great game in its own right)...
It is a good thing that this seems to be focused on consoles. I will get annoyed when my beloved PC Games become inundated with advertising...
The only PC Game I have ever seen with ads was this FREE multiplayer strategy game I played for a few weeks. This was years back, I don't remember the name... There were ads while the game was loading and the game was set in a stadium, with a few ads on the wall of the stadium. That wasn't too bad because the game was supported through those ads...
Russia has screwed up nearly everything they were supposed to do on the space station
By managing to keep it up in space for 3 times its original 5 year mission? I suppose crashing it into the ocean instead of into Australia was a big screwup too...
I don't think that international organizations should try and redefine kilobyte, megabyte, and gigabyte just because Hard Drive companies lower the values as a marketing ploy.

I would complain to Verizon to get something closer to my rated download speed but from what I've read I should consider myself lucky that it is both working and going faster than a 56k....
"You see, this is the highly advanced HOSTS system of filtering for Linux. This blocks out any internet servers with porn, sex, or nudity from forcing you to view their material. Any server that is identified to have porn sex or nudity is banned from your computer with the 127.0.0.1 ban signal."
It will work if all the 30 year olds in Texas are so stupid they can't even install CyberPatrol...
Hell, I think Windows even has support for a hosts file too...
Kids would definitely learn a lot more about computers from using Linux than Windows....
When I was about 7 I had a C128 (pretty much the same as a C64), and that thing taught me a lot about computers, since as soon as you turned it on you were at the BASIC interpreter, and you HAD to learn at least some of the language (LOAD "*",8,1) to even use the programs you had on the 5.25" disks....
The problem is that the admins in most schools don't know anything.... I am pretty sure that the admin at my school has never touched anything outside of Windows or Mac, and I know for a fact (from finger) that he has never used his username on the school's FreeBSD firewall.
The security is a joke, he has it set so you automatically log on to the network with the same username and password that you use to log on to windows... including his own account, and a quick search for "PWL crack" on Google got me his password so I now have as much control over the network as him without even having to learn the first thing about Netware....
This guy would not be able to set up anything Linux. Once he saw me telnet'ing to my home computer and it was obvious on his face that he had no idea what I was doing...
I think that most of the admins who are good are going to end up working at a company and not a school...
I, (a member of E2) was looking around H2G2 since I was feeling a little bored, and I found out that they considered the "All your base" flash movie to be offensive enough to warrant moderation....
After looking around there I know what to say to anyone who complains there is censorship on E2.

It also has no music.

Same thing here, when Napster broke I started using Morpheus (musiccity.com), and Look! It has this shiny "Video" button. Bootleg movies here I come.
Perhaps we can get the MPAA to sue the RIAA because they are encouraging video pirating by breaking Napster.
