Having noticed exactly the same thing, I had simply suspected that as Slashdot's popularity has grown it has become inhabited by very young impressionable guys, who's only experience (with computers, but thinking about it - extend that to almost anything) has been with Windows. Being young, male, and impressionable, they need to belong to a 'group' and it's easy to hate - and Apple is a very convenient target. Bashing Apple shows that you're 'one of the crowd' even though you've probably never used any system except Windows in your life. They get hints of what's 'accepted' by the crowd with the story summaries that are often written to inflame discussion to generate page hits.
It's self-reinforcing little world, and as a happy by product, may even encourage some people to use Linux. But what is most frustrating in this theory is the enormous amount of pure blind ignorance being channeled into the Apple hate.
Most of the Apple hate is venomous rants on issues that are at their heart the result of either absolute ignorance or intentional deception. Where you see intentional manipulation, I see a young immature burning desire to be accepted by something, anything. The true trait of a young isolated nerd.
The net result is the same however, and means that Slashdot is now largely devoid of moderating voices provided by experience people who have used more than 2 different operating systems in their lives, and for whom the choice of operating system is the selection of a tool to do a job, not a religion, and who probably have other healthy interests over being a full time nerd.
For other people stumbling across this comment - I'm not trying to flame, really. It's the honest observation of an old timer. One who seriously hope that this cuts too close to the bone of some of the crowd, as opposed to Bonch being correct.
You should have listened to your grandmother. When potatoes are exposed to light, they turn green (yes on the outside first) which is the result of chlorophyll production, but also this also goes hand in hand with toxin production. You can also cause this in tubers by dropping and damaging them. This is why there is a belief that you should avoid the outside of a potato. I don't think you can fault your grandmother for not having a background in toxicity and agriculture, but she had some good info. You can look it up, but here's a quick summary from the CSIRO:
Are green potatoes safe to eat?
Green potatoes may cause food poisoning and since some of the symptoms are similar to gastroenteritis it is possible that some undiagnosed cases of gastroenteritis have been caused by eating green potatoes.
Human and livestock deaths have been recorded as a result of the consumption of greened or damaged potatoes with very high glycoalkaloid levels. It should be noted that glycoalkaloids are not destroyed by cooking processes, even by frying in hot oil. Consequently potatoes with pronounced greening or with signs of damage should not be eaten.
It is advisable that green or damaged potatoes are avoided by pregnant women or women who are likely to become pregnant, as there is some evidence of possible foetal damage or loss of the foetus from glycoalkaloid poisoning in animals.
So just maybe the scientist warning about global warming are right. Or maybe they're also in on a great potato conspiracy.
Glossy screens appear much brighter, and so have many practical advantages (including appearing more vivid). The 'want my matte' crowd are actually largely the fashion-victims, sprouting crap about colour distortions and reflections without any idea about what they are saying.
And Apple was one of the last to move towards gloss screens. Sony, HP, and Dell led the charge there you ignorant shit.
This tells me more about the American attitude than it tells me about football (soccer).
You can: - Buy the best players; - Give them the best equipment; - Be lavish with money however you desire; - But you can still be whipped 2-0 by some upstart team from a 3rd world nation with none of your access to wealth and resources.
No wonder so many American's can't understand football!
Most rare earth deposits concentrated enough for mining (which is not a lot despite conventional wisdom that rare earth's are fairly abundant) are 'contaminated' with radioactive minerals. Uranium is potentially a by-product of newer techniques in rare earth refining.
That would be £2.50 for a PINT (approx 500ml) of beer (which sounds cheap if you're in central London, but everywhere else if probably right), to $2.50 for a GLASS (approx 250ml) of beer....?
It can (and is) often done on purpose too, to 'shake' out stocks - either providing the opportunity to buy more at lower prices or make money on a short position. There's much more of the later going around atm.
He was completely justified in calling feepness out. "Cool story, bro" conveys exactly the right blend of disbelief and exasperation that many of us feel in these ridiculous discussions considering the supposed critical faculty of fellow geeks.
No need to ride in to protect the innocent here, Mr action hero.
Yeah, I'm sure they're laughing inside directly at you. I'm sure they're not actually doing anything useful like reading the news or caching up on a book - so that they're better informed for the day ahead, or enriching their life.
Maybe those people who you think are 'cool' actually are cool because they spend their lives, you know....living? Rather than whining?
Legacy in that it has always been super easy to network a couple of macs together - with both Bonjour (and earlier versions), auto cross-over switching network sockets, easily mounted and managed shared drives, and tons more. Macs have been much easier to manage, run, and network for non-geeks for a long time. I don't think any rational person can argue with this, and it's one of the perceptual reasons why that people in the creative fields/scientific fields historically use Macs, and continue to (regardless of advances in 'ease-of-use' in Windows over the years).
And like it or not, there are plenty of technical reasons to choose Macs. The OS X audio and midi latencies are much better than Windows. The midi tools on OS X can do all sorts of useful tricks - sure you can get software on Windows to do it, but it's one more technical headache that many people just want to do without. Up until recently, the OS X versions of Illustrator, Indesign and Photoshop were much better at handling large files than Windows counterparts. This list goes on.
As someone who uses both Windows and OS X (and *BSD and Linux), it's relatively easy for me to see the strengths and weaknesses of each, and talk about them in a non-aggressive kind of way. I think you should probably broaden your horizons and technical experience a bit.
This is interesting. Most Mac owners I know are poor uni students, or were poor uni students. Most of them simply went without things that other people take for granted - cars, nice apartments, holidays, etc, and often made a small income from their machine - dj's, print designers, sound designers, etc.
Most of them see their machines as a hard working tool that suits their needs, not a fashion accessory. They sacrifice a few things to make that purchase, because that tool is more important to them than a holiday.
Stop being a doosh.

There's tons of businesses that have chosen iPhone over Blackberry (or others). Just sayin'.

You're a complete dick.

A moment of sanity, thank you. It's amazing how low Slashdot has fallen when a post like this has to actually be written.

Brilliant!
At least they'll sell 1 of them!
Watched? What about 'read'. Someone else is going to loose their nerd card too....
The CSM only really comes from the 0.0 player base anyway as the Corps and Alliances vote as blocks for their own candidates.
Therefore perhaps the CSM has a role as a 'lure'...move to 0.0 space and have the opportunity to influence your play style to your benefit.
"the idea that it could replace a desktop/laptop"
IN THE FUTURE.
Got it?
And that's where it would have stayed, except for the foresight & risk taken by Apple. Who bought it for cash & stock.

If you think that they're bad, you should see the mess that California is in...

I'm not as polite as Sancho - if you think that, then you're a complete fool. And you're probably running a malware infected PC right now.
Wow, a sane and reasonable geek, AND on Slashdot :)
Double NAT, double good!
P.S. 10.1.x.x going cheap. Mail me!
I think it's probably half legacy/half technical.

What, sore because you took a short position?
My god, well said.
