We've got cellphones! Everyone knows how great cellphones work in an emergency. Viva la cellphone!

Ham radio is antiquated. I can buy 2 FRS radios at Wal-Mart for 30 dollars and will be able to talk a whopping 1/2 mile.
    --

And when Isabel destroys many of the cell towers, where will you be then? Unless you have a satphone your Aunt Tilly in Burbank won't know what's become of you. She could get a message relayed via ham radio, with a response to find out that you are ok, although maniacally clutching your cell phone.

Also, FRS radios and Ham Radio are not the same thing, by a long shot.

My wife has been working on her Ph.D. for some years, and I have finally weaned her off of M$. She now uses FreeBSD without a lot of problems. Primarily she uses email [sylpheed], a web browser [opera], a calendar [ical], and a wordprocesser [OO].

To date, none of the Open Source word processors are worth a flip, including OO. AbiWord is crippled at best, and OO works to a better extent, but is a bloat monster. Basically, nothing on the Open Source side can match the capabilities of DeScribe for OS/2, which is almost a 10-year-old product [somebody PLEASE find the source code for this and port it to *nix!]

All she needs is basic, solid wordprocessing [as I convert everything she does to LyX anyway], and the OpenSource stuff falls flat.

Oh, I misunderstood. I think you meant Ugly PCB constructions as opposed to milled PCB.
    --

'Ugly construction' [or 'dead bug' construction] is putting things together over a solid [unetched] piece of PC board. All connections are lead-to-lead, and grounds go staight to the pcb. Works great at RF.

  23. Re:I could see where this could be handy on Build Your Own PCB Milling Machine · · Score: 2, Insightful

    --
How could "ugly" construction perform better on something so sensitive to impedance and trace layout and length as RF?
    --

Simple--you have a continuous ground plane underneath your components, which means that ground leads can be made as short as possible. Also, since you're not constrained by layout, you can ensure that inter-component leads are as short as possible, and that the input is nowhere near the output, etc. etc.

It's often the case that there are fewer problems, less stray capacitance, etc. with ugly construction over PCB construction.

As a benefit, it's faster as well.

  24. I could see where this could be handy on Build Your Own PCB Milling Machine · · Score: 1

for general mcb construction, but it really depends upon the application. Most of the stuff I would use it for would be RF, and 'ugly' construction is a heckuva lot faster, and usually performs better.

For computer hacking stuff, or for audio, this might be a handy thing to have.
