As you've missed about 100 times now...you're right that audibly, the first 320kbps mp3 probably has no difference from the .wav/compressed format of choice. However, convert that back to .wav, that .wav back to .mp3, rinse, repeat, and there eventually is going to be some audible difference, and more and more the further down the line you go. It's similar to when people traded tapes...an ANA1 (1st generation off the master) sounded a lot better than an ANA5 (5th generation).

Why don't you try reading the replies to your posts? It might help the discussion, and displace you off your soapbox. Oh wait...

Um, excuse me, but putting cameras on stoplights has EVERYTHING to do with public safety. You had me with the "most traffic laws" because I was thinking to myself that most traffic laws and tickets issued are in regards to speed driven.

Also, your assertion that they don't have the right to put a camera on traffic lights is wrong...the roads and traffic lights are owned by the government, correct? They can't put a device on your car that determines whether you stopped at a traffic signal or not (yet), but it is perfectly reasonable to put a camera on a traffic light.

Also, I tried to find more info on Operation Eagle, but could not find anything in regards to drunk driving. Can you provide a reputable link with more information on this so-called infringing activity? If there is any kind of probable cause (i.e. swerving, etc.) for them pulling you over, then I fail to see the problem with it?

The book ended for me at Aragorn's crowning and wedding, the rest should have been part of the appendix, or something.

1 and 2 - because it's many stores' policy, and a good one at that. The burden is on the store and the cardholder to prove that the transaction was true or false, not the card issuer.

Also, at dictionary.com (source: American Heritage Dictionary), I found the following definitions for "signed":

    1. Having a signature affixed: a signed document.
    2. Of, relating to, or expressed in a sign language: a signed translation.

    And for signature:

    1. One's name as written by oneself.
    2. The act of signing one's name.
    3. A distinctive mark, characteristic, or sound indicating identity: A surprise ending is the signature of an O. Henry short story.
    4. Abbr. Sig. or S. Medicine. The part of a physician's prescription containing directions to the patient.
    5. Music.
    1. A sign used to indicate key.
    2. A sign used to indicate tempo.
    6. Printing.
    1. A letter, number, or symbol placed at the bottom of the first page on each sheet of printed pages of a book as a guide to the proper sequence of the sheets in binding.
    2. A large sheet printed with four or a multiple of four pages that when folded becomes a section of the book.

So it appears that the one in KDE is at least unclear if not incorrect, "signed" means write your name, as it appears on the card, in cursive, with a pen.

3 - anyone who expects to keep their cashiering job more than 2 days will learn to keep their negative comments about customer behaviors to themselves. And I stopped being a Nazi about requiring a signature when a customer protested and my spineless manager relented, even though we have signs in the store and at the register stating that we required a signature.

And you are exactly right that you have the right to take your business elsewhere. But for your own protection, you really should realize that signing your credit card is a lot more secure than requiring your ID (if your card was stolen, and if the cashier requests to see the card at all).

I'm sorry, but the "check ID" thing in the signature is so stupid (I used to work retail so I had many incidents and much idle time for this thought to occur). All someone has to do, if they steal your credit card, is to make a fake ID with their picture and your name on it. Fake ID's are much easier to obtain than signatures are to copy, and cleaning the signatures off and replacing them doesn't really work very well anymore...and if it did, they could just wipe off "check ID" and write your name in their handwriting anyway.

Do you see your folly now?

I'm using Mandrake 9.1 with KDE 3.1.1a and it's at least as fast as Windows 2000 Professional (which I also have on this system dual booted). Running an Athlon XP 1700+ w/256MB PC2100 RAM, nothing spectacular for this day and age.

It's also at least as graphically unified if not more than my Win2k partition, because I'm using Open Office/Mozilla/Winamp/Trillian over there, and Open Office/Mozilla/XMMS/GAIM over here, the rest are basically the KDE/Mandrake apps. My gripe with Linux, the fonts, has been solved with Anti-Aliased fonts and now Mandrake has made getting the Windows fonts easy, giving a three-click install process to obtain them in the control panel.

The configurability is way better whether speaking graphic tools or console, and of course everybody knows that the Windows console (AKA DOS) cannot compare to Linux. I've been using Linux for a year and a half now so I think I'm out of the "gee wiz" phase too (have used Mandrake 8.1 - 9.1, Red Hat 7.3 - 8, Gentoo 1.2).

Mandrake automagically installed my printer and graphic card drivers in the install, a first with any distribution for me. It also installed the rest of my hardware problem-free, leaving only my scanner which was a three-click process with Scanner Drake through SANE.

The install process for Linux has been as good or better for a year. Office tools have been as good or better for 6 months. But with the newest crop of releases, I feel (and many agree) that Linux is really ready for the desktop now.

All forms of art are the same way, why should television story telling be any different?

And for the record, I love both the Simpsons and Buffy, but it took some time for me to be able to accept the latter. I don't expect anyone to arbitrarily give it a chance, I had to have my wife force me to watch it at her sister's house a bunch of times :)
