Good Data is just that.. and it can make solid predictions. It's clear transparency is good for markets (e.g., stock markets, Etc.) but is it good for people? My own take is data mining and tracking isn't evil; if you do business with a company you should assume, for better or worse, that they will try to understand and learn about you. If you don't wish that to happen, you need to pay in cash, not give them your zip code and avoid reward clubs, etc.

The ;) technical reason is in the monetization "stack;" think payola for hardware; if they are going to pay HTC or Samsung or internally Xbox to produce ARM hardware running Win 8, they want to make sure that only Windows 8 will ever run on that hardware.

While they could care about phones, I agree they care more about tablets and the XBox (the only ray of light in the quiver of tech arrows..). The bottom line is many of the devices with ARM will be subsidized and as Daengbo (and others note), you don't want someone changing the OS on hardware that you subsidized.

They can huff and puff as much as they want but this is about maintaining the monetization ecosystem of subsidized devices, otherwise you could give the user the key(s) to their device(s).

In the bad old days of computing you needed to put code into escrow if you lic'd it to insure that you had access to it in the event of a bankruptcy or the company just closing down, etc. With commercial products that also release to an open source project like Android there isn't as great a need, perhaps no need.

I think the bottom line here is that in the short, med and prob. long term it's not in Google's interests to play favorites and if they do Samsung and HTC (among others) have the resources to Fork Android continue on that path free from Google. They can do this at any time.. and I think that puts reasonable pressure on Google to behave

In terms of MSFT and Mango and future releases one has to not only consider the quality of the OS but also the cost of any licensing fees as well as it's popularity in the market place, it's performance, etc. Then even if MS doesn't buy Nokia there is certainly a tight relationship there and MSFT can certainly play favorites perhaps more easily than Google can.

Microsoft has one major advantage that they have used again and again. It's not their money, their technology but rather last mover advantage. They know how make bundles of technology introduced while other players have dominate market shares and take away those shares. They did it search, in word processing, spreadsheets, servers and they are working their way on gaming systems and others.

They have the time and the money to get it right and the money to get out there. People are only locked into phones for a few years and that gives MS and their partners plenty of time to improve and extend their offering.

Android will always suffer (in a VERY GOOD way) from being open source.. but not all will see that as a virtual. Apple is a closed garden. MS will walk the middle path more open that Apple but not as "open" as Android. They will integrate completely with all their services from Hotmail to office. This type of integration they have thought about and planned for years and they will make small marginal improvements until they win.

That's assuming it do Zune.. or any of the other products they have canceled along the way. Can you say, "Bob."

  16. Use Discovery don't mothball it on Discovery Heads Into Retirement · · Score: 1

Yes the tech is old and the computer systems highly dated, but boost them up one more time and leave them up where they can do a world of good. Like a used car they can't do the cannonball run any more but they have much more use in space then they do down the gravity well in a museum. With two of them up there you have lots of possibilities (and spare parts).

Up there they can be emergency escape pods, a space bound pick-up truck, they can use the robot arm(s) to help work on the space station and they could use the pair of them for other research: a test bed for new propulsion, communications, and life support systems.

In a fantasy world they could mod one to fly to the Moon (landing on a robot built landing strip) or sit in orbit around the moon to test space elevator technology (best to test on the Moon before testing on earth). In a super fantasy world you could tow one to Mars and let any crew working in orbit have a vehicle move around and deploy/fix communication and imaging satellites; or set up in auto pilot mode to fly extra supplies to the Moon or Mars; a slow and steady was to send packaged foods and toilet paper.

Also interesting will be to see if they can get as much corporate content as they already have consumer content. They did do away with Google Video service..

I would love it if YouTube/Google/Google TV was my one shop stop for searching on video content and then let the technology figure out how best to view it; also figure out the cheapest way. For example I subscribe to HBO on demand but on my cable box when I search for movies they will charge me for watching these movies unless I come in via the HBO interface.. For those who are always looking for the rock bottom price, they are very taken care of by companies and web sites like 99designs; designers, like all companies selling a product need to segment the market place and find those customers who are not only motivated by the price.

We are more Mobile but we also have to help take care of our family: our parents who live longer, and our other relations not to mention children and the need for parents or grand parents to help care for our kids, etc. Technology lets' us travel more, and stay connected when we do. It also helps us connect to our growing networks of friends and family.

However, there are many economic reasons to stay close to a birth location assuming that is near other family members. Of course there are exceptions including those who really want to "get away" and those who have the wealth or work need to relocate (say to SF or NY). These reasons can not helped or hurt by technology other than technology lets people live longer, and may help older people stay more independent longer.

Until there is a robot that can stay home with Mom and look after her, help her take her meds and buy her groceries, do light household and yard work, etc. Then there really isn't any other technology (besides money) that can help us.
