    Basically AMD has the better server option over Xeon for the next year or two. If it lasts any longer than that Intel will lose dominance and they know that. Because of this they have done the following to refocus on their core process, microprocessors.
    • Canceled - Next versions of the P4, Tejas
    • Canceled - +4GHz chips with ever diminishing returns
    • Canceled - The Alviso chip for notebooks
    • Realized they had to extend 64-bits to the Xeon/P4 line
    • Realized they had to make Itanium run x86-64

    So now they have a crappy processor core and to save themselves they are throwing every resource available at making dual core chips because AMD is ahead of them on that by 6-12 months and it is going to kill their cash cow business.

    Back in the days (only several years ago) when a computer normally cost $2000+ and the sub $1000 wasn't even around, MS could resonably charge $150 for an OS because it was But now that computers have come down to ~300-400, who wants to pay 100+ for software now that it represents > 25% of the total cost. Answer, not many. MS needs to reprice the OS to ~10% of the cost of a computer.

    As much as people don't want to hear it, they have always been smart with how the price licenses. Most other high-end software vendors, such as Oracle, are pricing their software based on the number of cores.

    But microsoft is being smart and realized that 1) 1 proc 2 cores != 2 proc 1 core and 2) people will be happier upgrading their systems under this system.

    I've been thinking about getting one of these and putting most of my day to day working files on it. The problem is there is some sensitive data that I need to protect somehow.

    So far my best idea has been to encrypt all the files with AES or something similar and keep the encryption tool as the only non-encrypted file. This way I can access all my files anywhere but at the same time I won't worry if it's lost since the data is protected.

    After hunting around TrueCrypt seems like the best option.

    So, does anyone have any suggestions or experiences to share?

    Thats why they called it an "engineering prototype". That can be anything, even two separate processors slapped together in the same package. You can be sure that if they had real silicon they would be showing pictures and doing a _LOT_ more PR.

    Seriously, go to groklaw and read the latest 4-5 files from IBM. Yes they are each ~100 pages but very interesting. Basically IBM has nailed SCO in a box that they can't get out of. In fact IBM is so confident that the language in their filings has gotten beyond the normal angry lawyer comments as they point out how insane SCO's arguements are.

    I litterly get about 200 spams day now. I'd say 99.99% of them are illegal under the CAN-SPAM act. If the only spam I got was legal spam under this law, spam wouldn't be a problem at all, I can handle 2-3 emails a week from businesses I've had recent dealing with. I hate having to bother with filters for the rest.

    I moved to Mass. a couple of years ago and believe it or not the taxes are not that bad. For my job I now work in Vermont about 50% of the time and looked into changing my residency for tax reasons.

    Lets just say that the Vermont taxes are about 100% more than Mass. and health care was about 150% more. (Guess who pays for all that 'free' health care Dean) The difference was disgusting, I don't know how anyone can live in VT.

    I also just bought a car and got it from a dealership in CT. Again, it turns out taxes in Mass were a little less than CT.

    So.... I don't see how anyone can complain about Mass.

    P.S. Did I also mention that becuase auto insurance is completely state government regulated my auto insurance in Mass. is a LOT lower than it was in CT, IL or WA. (Yes I move a lot)

    Not that I agree with this, but this winter in Vermont I was hit in a major head on collision by a drunk driver. I never thought it'd happend to me, but she was flying down hill around a turn and while it was both snowing and below zero (so the salt doesn't work well at that point).

    The car was at maximum crumple zone and I was very lucky to come out of it OK. But you have to realize that there are completely irresponsible people out there who can/will attack you without any concern for their actions. (btw this chick also never even appoligized for almost killing me)

    This law is probably being pushed by those who have been seriously injured or had family members killed by drunk drives and in a way I agree with them because our drunk driving rules are way too lax.

    Also, you guys can troll that all you want, but it is still a legitimate question, why his being Mormon matters.

    When people start to imply that a person's religion is the cause of their actions it can lead to the thought process that a religion some how needs to be "fixed". This has happened many times in the past and very often with dangerous consequenses.

    I myself am not a fan of Mormons. Just last month two caught me on a sidewalk and wouldn't stop preaching until I walked away. But I seriously question any implication that Darl's actions are a result of his being Mormon
    So I still want to know why the original poster cares.

    Why do you ask this? Does it matter?

    Is there something wrong with being Mormon? Does it have anything to do with them being a good/bad person?

    Maybe it is just that us Americans aren't as enlightened as you Europeans. If we were, we'd just gas everyone in Utah and that'd fix the problem.

    Can someone tell me what exactly is 'wrong' about this. Last time I checked usenet is in the public domain. Anyone (including MS) is free to archive the whole darn thing and analyze it anyway they want to. If you don't like that then don't post on usenet.

    BTW, for those people say "I wouldn't mind if google did this", google does much worse. They have tried to implement tools to track people's web page history, there was useful intent behind it, but that data could be much more misused.

    The NJ supreme court ruled that counting cards is perfectly legal because you are still playing by the rules of the game. However, this only means the casinos can not prevent a card counter from playing. They can shuffle up on the player, when you count cards, you really only gain an advantage after going through about half of the shoe, if the casinos see you counting they will reshuffle before then.

    Actually I've learned a little trick to get around this. If you ever get turned down for a credit card application, all 3 main credit agencies have to provide you a free credit report if asked for within a several month time frame. So every couple of years file one of the five applications you'll get tomorrow and enter $0 for annual income. You will be turned down and you can then ask for the reports.

    A modded xbox is 1) cheap 2) looks cool, and most important 3) plays my divx movies served up from the server in the closet. I have yet to see another device that can do that for $250 (xbox plus chip).

    People who say you can put somthing together on your own are kidding themselves. I want to see someone put together a machine with a motherboard, decent proc, gpu card, TV OUT, hard drive, ethernet and looks acceptable near the tv for $250. You can't
