Ok, I guess I should say for those with short wave radios you can listen to WWV. This is a time service that transmits from Boulder Colorado and WWVH from Hawaii. It is really odd to listen to when they insert leap seconds. They also give solar terrestrial conditions and forecasts among other information.

"Sometimes I think that people feel that the MPAA is a bunch of Luddites," Brad Hunt, chief technical officer of the MPAA, said in an interview Wednesday afternoon. "In this case, we are trying to incent the consumer to embrace the digital conversion, the digital connection...and that's why we need to drive this technology forward."

Actually I think hes a retard and that whole paragraph is the biggest pile of PR bullshit i've read today.

I certainly would agree with you on this. I don't mind going digital, but I do object to the MPAA/RIAA buying laws to "protect" me for my own good. This is why I won't buy any new TV sets. Currently I use a 21" computer monitor and computer for my entertainment needs. I can rip mp3's, oggs and rip my DVD's onto the hard drive for convince (until the RIAA/MPAA force hard drive manufactures to make RIAA/MPAA approved versions). It's quite ironic that older analog TVR's, TV's, computer equipment and monitors offer more flexibility than the new DRM encumbered digital versions.

1.No DRM of any kind on publicly viewed/listened media.
    2.No software patents.
3.Adoption of open source in government.

Get your "Shit will be different" button now, and as a bonus I'll throw in the "Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out button" while supplys last.

As a licensed amateur radio operator I was beside myself when the FCC gave BPL deployment the green light. It proved to me that none of the commissioners have ANY technical competence at all, and that any decision right or wrong is made entirely for political reasons.

Current BPL technology is a kludge at best, it is the equivalent of duct tape and bailing wire. The interference that is created doesn't just effect the ham bands, it effects every service that is found between 1.8-80 MHz. The "interference mitigation" card is pure bull shit. For non hams how would you feel if I developed a Internet delivery method that disrupted your cell phone service? And every time you attempted to use your cell phone you disrupted your neighbors Internet access.

BPL is a bad idea, the laws of physics will never make it viable or economical, how many of you would get pissed off if I was constantly disrupting your Internet service for minutes or hours with my HF transceiver when I drive through town, I know I would.

  19. Re:Why broadband sucks in the US.... on U.S. Broadband Access Falling Behind · · Score: 1

You certainly hit the nail on the head with this. Just think of all the taxes and access fees they would charge you for 100M/bit access. Not to mention that the RIAA/MPAA would want to slap a "piracy" tax to cover their losses since your Internet connection "could be used to pirate copyrighted material" at blazingly fast speed.

  20. Broadband in America on U.S. Broadband Access Falling Behind · · Score: 2, Interesting

While not really considered "broadband" I am testing my "National Access" via my verizon cell phone service. On the average I get 16.3kB/sec, not too shabby, about 3X the speed of dial up. A friend of mine has EVDO service, while not the be all end all it's still better than nothing.

The biggest thing I hate with US phone and cable service providers is that they try to make you think they are doing you a favor by giving you sub-standard service. I won't be truly happy till I get 100M/bit full duplex access to the Internet via fiber, cable or some sort of UW-band data service.

Since I live in a real rural area (no cable Internet or ADSL) dial up or cell phones are my only choice. I know there is satellite but low latency is a must. So in the meantime I am posting this via my cell phone service...
