Is running Open Server 6 right now. We had a power glitch Saturday and again this morning. With each glitch Open Server never recovered even though the box powered back up. If it wasn't bad enough that our IT guys connected this abomination to a UPS with bad batteries, it's taking them over an hour to get the thing up and running again. Now I have had linux and Solaris boxes with no UPS recover just fine from all kinds of power glitches, so this makes me wonder.

My message to the KDE guys is cut the BLOAT! Focus on usability and speed. Make KDE as configurable as Windows, there are WAY TOO MANY configuration options in KDE now. I am looking at Windowmaker more and more these days.

This method works great for playing hours worth of music, and best of all there's NO DRM!I can even find butt loads of new blank tapes at thrift shops for $.25.

I even have tapes I recorded back in the 80's that still sound just as good as the day I recorded them, try that with a CD-R.

The problem is that interference is a two way street. So far, most hams have not gotten so pissed that they just to decide to transmit in a BPL serviced area anyway, completely disrupting YOUR BPL service in the process. If your service had constant disruptions would you still use it? You were better off with Comcast. If I came up with a new Internet service that completely disrupted your cellular service would you still like it? And every time you tried to use your cell phone it disrupted your Internet service? I think not, this is what BPL does to the shortwave bands.

Until I can receive some sort of free basic programming like I do off rabbit ears, it will be very unlikely I'll pay some grossly inflated "subscription" fee to watch TV. I haven't had cable TV in 10+ years, and quite frankly haven't missed it. I get my news and info via the web, broadcast radio and the interesting stuff from shortwave. The real reason for this switch is to free up radio spectrum, spectrum that can be used for many other things. Secondly are the broadcast control freaks who have rammed the "broadcast flag" down out throats, it's just as annoying as the unskipable adds on DVDs.

The 2006 deadline will probably be extended for what ever reason. But when the day finally does come, I'll be relatively unaffected by this. They will eventually want to do this with AM and FM broadcast as well, the ruse will be "better fidelity" but will really be a subscription you will have to pay for.

I also had problems with Verizon. I went from being able to get DSL to not being able to get it, and when I asked about naked DSL the support person was dumbfounded. This was also met with the usual "We have no plans to upgrade the DSLAM equipment in the CO you are connected to."

My answer was "cancel my phone service please." Since then I have been using T-Mobile hot spots for my access and where ever I can find a open access point. With T-Mobile I get synchronous T-1, and since I am a T-Mobile subscriber I get the T-Mobile hot spot use for $19.95 a month. Yeah it's kind of a pain in the ass, but Comcast costs WAY too much and Verizon can stick it till they offer naked DSL in my area.

I sure miss not being able to run my own servers :(
