  1. Re:Why...... Yagi and helix antennas are better on New Phased-Array AP Boosts 802.11b Range · · Score: 1

About 6 months ago a friend and I were doing some experements with 6 element yagi antennas and a linksys access point. We were easily able to acheive 1 mile ranges on open flat terrain. But the real kicker was when we were able to get pings (0-25% loss) form a distance of 8 miles. But to do that we had to get about 300 feet of elevation, park the car and carefully turn the beam till we found the signal. Overall the signal strength was around -75dBm, the connection was usuable but just barely..

As I have stated in earlyer posts, I'm finished with Intel processors and comodity hardware in general. x86 has served me well through the years but trying to expand on it in it's current form has turned into a kludge. I'm moving on to someting else like Sun and/or Silicon Graphics hardware. Sure it's a lot more expensive but hell, 64 bit RISC processors and I/O bandwidth are the way to go. Besides, I can still run Linux on it :)

  3. Chill out and buy a SPARC... on Solaris 9 Support On x86 - But With A Price · · Score: 1

I have played with Solaris for some time now. First was when they had the free Solaris 7 x86 promotion back in 98. I payed some 19 dollars for my media kit and installed it on a Compaq Deskpro 4000. Years later I aquired a SPARCserver5, a Ultra 1 and tried it for real. With the Ultra 1 I was impressed how fast Solaris ran in 64 bit mode. Now I am in the process of getting a Ultra 80 and can't wait to try it on some real hardware. Since then, my preference for cheap comsumer grade x86 hardware has deminished greatly.

Be lucky that Sun has decided to bow to it's consumers and released a x86 port of Solaris 9. If all you are going to do is complain then go buy Sun hardware and do it right the first time... Besides, it stimulates the economy and dosen't contribute to the Microsoft tax.

  6. Use a bewoulf of Cray X1s ;) on SETI@Home Faces Funding Problems · · Score: 0

But seriously, I have been a seti member almost from the beginning. But lately I have lost interest in turning out work units, this is mostly due to the length of time to crunch each unit. Using both of my dual 1GHz PIIIs I was only able to do about 6 units in 24hrs (running 1 session per box). If I ran 2 sessions per machine I could get 11-12 units done. But this would make the machines kind of sluggish and made a noticable difference in my power bill.

Never the less, I'd hate to see seti fold and go away, I still think it gives the average joe the feeling that he/she's doing something usefull.

It would be like Sun comming in and demanding them to pay licences for Solaris. Just how many more billion$ does Micro$oft need? Using these kind of tactics against schools is just uncalled for.
