no but really..Linus' sentiment was largely in line with a Randian objectivist type. Take that and add in the conception of him as a lone wolf uber-prodigy in his field (roark in architecture, linus in hacking), and you have an interesting parallel. At least I thought so.
Tune in next week when i semiotically deconstruct "The Little Prince" into its roots of class warfare, existentialism and the god-child construct.
Now that would be horrible, but any future from oracle would most certainly involve Larry being much richer, and me being much poorer.(/rtongueincheek)
What is your opinion on Hailstorm,.Net and the rest of the technologies Microsoft is preparing to roll out in the years to come? Can these releases have an impact on Linux and if yes, in what way?
Linus Torvalds: See my answer about not caring what the competition does, but doing my own thing as well as I can..
Ellsworth Toohey: "Why don't you tell me what you think of me?......."
Actually yeah, I do think Hussein would have stopped at Kuwait. Kuwait is a portion of Iraq to some Iraqis in the same way that Taiwan is a part of China to some Chinese. Do you think that because China wanted Hong Kong and wants Taiwan that it seeks to create another Pan-Asiatic "co-prosperity sphere"?
Take a look at Hussein's position before the US intervened. TO the east, he's got Iran who already wooped his ass, to the south, he's got the very rich Saudi Arabia, flying F15s, to the north, Turkey, a NATO member state, to the West, Syria and Jordan: two relatively unimportant friendly arab states teeming with refugees.
Ultimately, Hussein was looking for reuinification of Iraq, increased oil reserves, and greater access to the Gulf. Not an Osamic Pan-Asian Fundamentalist state.
Of course, there is nothing like a personal visit by a civil, literate, but angry constituent to their office, followed up by a letter citing the visit.
There are always options. The manner in which we carry out this war will either gain us the support of the rest of the civilized world (or rather not lose it), or damn us for the next hundred years.
We need to avoid if at all possible the killing of innocent civillians because that would lend addition credence to the argument that America is exerting Imperialism on Islam. We can't however, be tied to closely by this to the point of not being able to prosecute a war effectively (see Haiphong Harbor).
You're thinking of the Security Council authorizing the use of force. Declaration of War comes from the US Congress and hasn't happened since Pearl Harbor.
Wow, good thing they're dropping TRANSISTOR radios. Good of you to make the distinction, I would hate to see people to have to use the vacuum tube radios they were first thinking about delivering.
There will always be casualties in war. They are unavoidable.
Beyond unavoidable, they are the purpose of war. The killing of non combatants, while horrible, is sometimes necessary. The question is when does it become necessary. Carpet bombing Grenada would have been wrong. Nuking Hiroshima, on the other hand, was the right thing to do. The hard part is knowing when we've crossed the line, and being prepared to deal with the consequences.
The military person is almost certainly much better at hand-to-hand combat than the student.
This is largely dependent upon where in the Navy the chief served. From my time in blue, I remember seeing an embarrassing number of chiefs with pot bellies and nasty demeanors. If he struck me, I would relish the opportunity in whupping his ass, the fatass serving as proxy for all the shit I had to take.
That said, I would also take great care to notice whether said chief was wearing a gold emblem with an eagle and a trident. This seal chief is likely to kill you. Run.
Yeah actually I am. My favorite ad from the Merc goes something like "You always wanted a million dollar estate, but you always thought it'd be bigger than 800 sq ft"
That joke aside, it's bad but not THAT bad. You're still living pretty phat if you're rockin the 1.5M house, even if that only makes you upper middle class. Pardon me while I go fester my socialistic tendencies over some ramen and government cheese.
I'm no expert in this topic, but I've always wondered if what we consider a virus is the vector or the infected cell itself. The answer is that it's the vector, because it could theoretically infect all sorts of types of cells and still be the same "thing", but still..its kind of an interesting chicken and egg problem.
Well more technically, Virtual Technology made 'em til Immersion bought them. Still it's available for purchase.
What's more, they combine this idea with haptics, attaching motors so that when you interact with objects, they push back on you. You can even rest your hand on an object and have the motors support the weight of your arm. Very Cool.
Voyager had a hydroponics bay, for instance. The replicators can handle the food, but there's nothing like pure-seed Puna Butter. I suspect Janeway knew that too. It's 420, on SOME planet, right?
You might want to check out the af.mil domain. Those Afghans appear to have quite the arsenal of advanced aircraft and ICBMs. What's more, they're recruiting!

Praise be unto the dollar sign!
Everyone wants an oracle to tell us the future

Howard Roark: "But I don't think of you."
You mean no longer existant, right? As in long, long ago?
Or maybe the force is a radiated field dependent on distance from the source? As in far, far away?

You forgot the best part of that whole story, you know where we "annex" Canada.
...and a campaign contribution

considering china and afghanistan border one another, that is about as meaningless as comparing relative distances between the US and Canada.

maybe you didn't notice the price of the silo itself ($1.5e6). If you can afford the silo, you can afford piping to it.
sadly, this is funny in the "ha ha, only serious" vein.
Flaming testes!

It was cracked? Does that mean the genome was running IIS?
