In Europe most countries have a legal drinking age 2 years lower than the driving age (Drink: 16, Drive: 18). As much as I like... or even more... love, this book, I think it is going to be hard to make a movie that satisfies everybody.
It is not a book that translates very well to the movie language.
Tolkien's books immerses the reader in a world of imagination, magic and fantasy... all those in its mind. The problem of the movie is that they have to show the directors point view... so there is less room for the viewer's imagination.
Also, in the LOTR Tolkien states Aragorn-Arwen relationship in a paragraph. And that's it... In literature, specially if its epic, you can get away with : "Their love was eternal and pure... move on"
In a movie that is not going to work. If Aragorn's love is an important feature of his personality they have to develop it in a convincing way. And it is obvious it is. Aragorn's love for Arwen (at least the way I interpret the book) is the one of Aragorn's main motivations to fulfill his destiny (become a king, and therefore be able to marry her)...
Emphasizing the love story can be a good resource to tell this story. I'd wait and see.

In this "Amazon award for the best book" we have another example. I browsed quickly over the 100 books they have there. The first non english book comes in 26th position and there are only 11 in total.
In the www. there is included a "world wide", something that most companies keep forgetting. Although Amazon is an American company, they should keep in mind that they are not anymore living in the closed environment of their country, but in a WORLD WIDE community. They should act accordingly. English literature is just a very small percent of all what has been written in this last millenium.
Companies like Amazon should take advantage of this kind of awards and OPEN them to all the cultures and languages that this environment offers us.

  17. On catastrophes and other predictions on Science and Technology In Y2K · · Score: 2

Although there are some good points in what you say I also have to disagree with some of it.

There will be a spike in "summer" temperate environments. This will bring about the melting of polar caps and the re-routing of standard ocean currents. Once there is enough moisture in the atmosphere, the temperatures will steadily decline

This is just one of the many theories. It is based on the principle that when there is more moisture in the atmosphere the albedo of the earth increases, therefore it reflects more of the Sun's radiation. Less radiation means lower temperatures. Lower temperatures lead you to snow precipitation that increase the Earth's albedo even more...

But... at the same time, as temperatures lower, less water is evaporated, so there are less clouds. Less clouds less albedo... less reflection, increases temperature...

And this is just one of the factors. There are many more considerations I don't even mention.

Although I am no denying the importance of the problem I believe that these alarmist predictions only diminish the credibility of less catastrophic, still serous and more scientific investigations.

Global warming does not mean that we'll be wearing shorts in January. What it does mean is that the seasons will be come more extreme and completely unpredictable.

Prediction is a matter of information. Weather might become extreme (another unproved theory), but the principles of its prediction will be the same. With the improvements in technology I can only predict better predictions.

The only way to bounce back is to shut the planet down and take about a 100 year rest from resource depletion, fossil fuel use, let the forrests re-grow, and all of the anti-global warming idoits out there to stop their "we aren't going to do any thing to the Earth's climate".

Nobody should deny there is warming effect going on. True, and some measures have to be taken. Again, extremists and alarmists only take credibility out of the real problem. Proposing solutions like this is a mistake. First, you are assuming that the global warmth is caused ONLY by those reasons... there are many other reasons. Do not forget that you are trying to evaluate a billions year process from a 10 year analysis. There has been global warmth periods in the past, there has been glacial ages in the past... so, keep your mind open, be ACCURATE in your studies and PROPORTIONATE in your solutions. Being alarmist and catastrophic will not help, and will make people take this issue less seriously.

Haven't it crossed your mind to accept it? At least for a while. There are some gains on it:
    - It is a step that eventually everyone takes. It is difficult to stay in the technical field forever specially when technology changes so fast and there are willing young people better prepared than you in those fields. It will not happen now, nor in 5 even 10 years. But it is a step you will have to take anyway.
    - In the software development process there are many steps. Managing a project gives you a point of view that you lack when you just develop. I think the experience can be valuable.
    - From what everyone is saying it seems likely that you will change your job anyway. Why not giving it a try?
    - It is a new experience, you might end liking it and all. If you don't, well, you can always find a new job.

  24. My own experience on CS vs CIS · · Score: 1

After reading some of posts I get the feeling that people think that the only difference between CS and CIS is math. IMHO I believe that is just scratching the surface.

    - CS gives you deeper understanding of what you are really doing, rather than just knowing how to do it. Therefore, in general, you get better troubleshooting skills, which are VERY valued in the professional world.

    - The IT market has been on a boom for several years, but all that goes up, goes down. Eventually. And this will too (and it is already showing some signs of it). Think that when you graduate the market will probably be closer to be saturated, and then is when CS will have the edge again.

    - When in a course 20 managers listed what we value most in a new hire the 3 top things out of a list of 15 were consistently: Ability to learn, Initiative and base knowledge. Make your own conclusions.

    - It is my feeling after 4 years working that CS end up as developers and CIS end up as users, VB developers or DBA's (not there is anything wrong with that! ;D)

    - Basic law of life. What takes you more effort ends up giving you more rewards.

    - IT industry law: You are what you have done the last 3-4 years.

    - If what worries you is getting a first job, I think that an internship in a good company before you graduate is going to be more important than the difference between CIS and CS.

    - But at the end... it all comes to the individual. I hire people, not Resumes... It is going to be your attitude, your initiative, your enthusiasm what at the end is going to get you hired. What you have done up to the point of the interview is a reflection of who you are and how you do things. Choosing between CS and CIS already says something about you.
