It's basic economics. What is described is how it works in theory. However, the theory requires perfect knowledge for all parties involved, zero costs for movement of capital (human and otherwise). I'm also unsure how comparative advantage (Google and David Ricardo are your friends) works in a market that is essentially saturated.
Perhaps the thing that really needs to be looked at is that IT support is viewed as a commodity. Support offered in India or Russia is viewed as the same quality product as that offered in the US. If this is the case, quitcherbitchin. I doubt you are buy American in other walks of life. If there is a difference in quality, it's time to express that. Was it Dell who found that their business customers wanted US tech support instead of Indian tech support? (or HP?) The product wasn't a commodity, so it couldn't be switched.
Rather than gripe about losing your job, explain why it's better that you have it than someone in another hemisphere.
And if you made it this far, here's a link to a non unreadable article. Will Taco et al. ever admit they are wrong with this color choice?
Sorry, Windows 95 was a quantum leap over Win 3.1x in terms of interface. Me up to and including 2k3 added very little in terms of interface, but the switch to 2k/XP got rid of the bulk of Win16 cruft (not all. Just like it took forever and a day to 100% drop the 68k stuff from MacOS).
Also, Internet, mail, etc. weren't ever intended to be part of Win95 in any meaningful way. Remember, this is when the first draft of 'The Road Ahead' came out. Bill's tome that talked about the grand future of computing with not a single word about the internet. Until version 2.0.
So now we are back to just Cliff for editors on slashdot who don't suck. Oh well, at least there will now be one writer on gamasutra who DOESN'T suck:)
Same thing here. Where I live, if I hit 30 elections, it means I'm 78 years old. Local elections are scheduled for even numbered years. We haven't had a special election in at least 25 years. That's fairly normal.
It does vary from state to state, and not pointing this out shows the ignorance of the parent to my original post.
I think you meant to say "about 60", since, you know, there is an election every year.
Since, um, you know, you're a moron. Enough US citizens get slagged for not knowing about the rest of the world, but you're such a tool, you don't know about the rest of the US. Where I live, elections every two years, unless there is a special election called.
30*2+18=78
Just about spot on for the life expectancy of people in the US.
Right now,/. hands out mod points for logging on from different IPs. I suppose this is to... I don't know. I really have no idea why this is part of the algorithm to hand out mod points. But seeing as how most broadband connections have fairly long lived IP address, isn't it time to drop this requirement? No longer is it someone living on their college or job's fat pipe. It's just a regular person.
You are correct. This is why my deaf-blind wife, after reading for too long complains about 'tired eyes'. It's not the eyes that are tired, it's the visual cortex.
Of course, she skews things a bit, as she was born with both vision and hearing.
Can't remember what directory (and the iPod is in the other room), but if you can't find it with a quick google, email me, and I can tell you where to chuck the file on the iPod.
Even better than promoting both applications is the fact that I can save the sunbird calendar to my iPod. Not as super slick as if I was using iCal, but better than Outlook.
And yet another action meant to piss off the Germans. (For those who don't know, in Germanium, the official language of Germania, they avoid the problem of capitalization of nouns by capitalizing all of them.)
It was boring as shit, with a clunky interface. I would expect that the corporeal hand of god would be at least as easy to train as my Heinz 57 RL dog. Such was not the case.
As far as the positive reviews, read the updates. Many have said 'what were we thinking?'
This is the same clown and same pre-acclaim from Black and White? No thanks, I'll wait a LOONNNGGGGG time and see if it is a game or another exercise in video game masturbation.
"ooh, look at my creature. I taught it not to eat it's own feces."
I've not heard anybody that likes it, only people that don't mind it.
Taco will respond in a journal entry in another month (maybe) saying that while all of us trolls bitched about the color scheme on shit.slashdot.org, he received thousands upon thousands of emails saying how brilliant it was.
Any merchandise, new or classic, is licensed by the copyright holder, the decendants of Milne's agent, exclusively to Disney. Disney is free to sublicense to whomever they want. IIRC, Milne's children are suing, saying that Milne got screwed when he sold the rights to his agent.
You left out one factor: elasticity. How elastic are suppliers and demanders (to maintain the economics parlance) to variations in the price? The US is the major user of petroleum, and doesn't give two shits about the price. Some surveys that came out a few months ago claimed there wouldn't be a noticeable dent in US consumption until the price of a gallon of gasoline reached $3 per gallon.
Another factor is that gasoline is not he only place petroleum winds up. Base stocks for medicines, plastics, etc. While a chinese plastic dog vomit manufacturer employee might not want to buy gas for his scooter, the company will still need plastic to fulfill the contract to its US importer.
Link, please? Are you referring to 'Thick as a Brick' by Jethro Tull? Perhaps a concert version was 43 minutes long, but I don't recall ever seeing a 33rpm record (state of the art at the time of the release) that allowed 43 minutes of material on one side.
(And if you've got an mp3 source, that would really rock. I was toying earlier with an all 'Layla' playlist on my iPod, but what would really kick ass would be 'all the long versions'. Layla, Court of the Crimson King, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (I have a three minute single version of that somewhere. Yuck.) and so on.)
(Speaking of long live versions, my father saw Clapton perform Layla for a ninety minute set once. I think every band member got a 5-10 minute solo.)

Just as long as they don't call it Koogle.
There is already prior art. It'll be 'Killustrator' all over again.
Will Windows apps be using their own appearance? Darwine *should* use some native widget set.
Did I miss any?
Just that one. (Read the subject line)

Maryland. Every other year. It varies by county. Check for both St. Mary's and Charles. I believe Garret and Allegheny are also biannual.

Whatever happened to his game 'The Movies'?
Linux sound is simplicity itself. How does this article demonstrate that Linux is ready for the desktop again?

I think the solution is clear.
Whenever I find I have 'too many cables' somewhere in my computer, I use it as justification to buy something new to put in the case.
Would be a fun test. Send all three, and maybe a .au file just to be sure. Oh, and a Mac system beep format.

Yes, IAE (I am an economist).
Ugh, how can you stand slashdot? I swear, if I read one more of these economics threads, I'll have to hand in my degree.
OTOH....
(Hah, economist humor, I kill me.)
