I totally agree. I use Linux on my desktop for over 5 years now and it works perfect for me, but that's a personal opinion and depends on the things that I do with computers. Over the past 2 years the desktop has become a lot better and in some area even a lot better than the windows desktop to my opinion. Perhaps for some people there's a lack on major application like Adobe Photoshop(etc...), but certainly when judging the OS by itself it works magnificent I believe. Many windows users I know are still on win98 and don't like to upgrade to later versions because their old hardware isn't supported in XP or it's simply too expensive they feel. So for those users I'd have to compare the current Linux desktop with win98 and I would certainly say that Linux would be a clear winner.
Better too many than too little. Install Windows and see how far you get without installing anything else besides that disc. You probably won't even have a program to unzip your archives:-)
I don't agree to that. In case these users don't know how to deal with Windows they can instead also use Linux without knowing every detail. I mean clicking on a browser icon and browse the net is the same thing. Also using email is as easy as in windows. Even using openoffice shouldn't be too much of a problem. Why do you think these users need to know everything about the Linux if they don't know that from windows ?
Just tried to get online with my bank. It turns out they switched to use the MS java stuff. Unable to get through anymore. Great move, they just lost a customer.
I wouldn't really care about that. I rather have a 100.000 posting posting DeCSS if didn't mather. unfortunately DeCSS is rather insignificant nowadays and rather outdated. Not necessary anoymore for decryption because a simple brute force crack already will fo the job (www.videolan.org for example). Besides trhat one doesn't even need to decrypt to copy a DVD. It's simply noy copy protection at all. And we better shut up about this issue before we waiste anyone else's time:-)
I don't use laptops at my house, just company use. I do use linux from CDROM on those because I don't want out IT department to know I use it:-)
Assembling a desktop PC is a job of about 1-2 hours. Not difficult at all. It doesn't safe you much money though but you do have the choice of hardware. Anyways, if you go to an average computer store and just ask for a decent configuration you'll get about the same thing that I'll build at my place. it's not hard for an average consumer to get what he/she wants. They just have to ask.
I don't care about service as long as it's fullfillig my needs. Cable does that job so far. I don't care much about monopoly either, as long as it doesn't affect standards.
hmm, I never payed for an MS licence. I always build my PC's myself, I don't play games, I don't use MS software and still use a computer >10 hours a day. And, I do live on earth:-) Those few things I can't do without MS I can really do perfectly without.
I guess they are much better of using that money to support other software companies or even better OSS projects. Now that money goes to lawyers and that's not good at all. Another year or so in court will never stop microsoft from doing their business. Not supporting/buying their products is the best way to let them know that you're not satisfied with their product.
There are many DeCSS plugins for xine. They are all based on libdvdcss which does do some brute force crack of the encryption. Which basically means CSS is a weak encryption and is completely useless. It doesn't even make sense to use it against copying since a DVD can just as well be copied with the encryption included. CSS just has totally no use at all besides fighting in court to make lawyers richer.
Although I would like it when it's legal to use, I simply don't care much when it's not. That is due to the fact that I'll not buy a stand alone DVD-player and will not use windows either. I like to play DVD's and audio CD's using Linux. When the music and movie industrie don't allow me to do that, they shut me out as a customer.
It's the industry that can't support their own standards well. If they where really supporting, they would have had DVD-players for Linux/FreeBSD etc.... Since they can't support that and have made a wrong choice with CSS (DVD's still get copied, not due to DeCSS) the customer must pay ??? Now way !!!
Apperantly you never really experienced an stable OS. W2k isn't really that stable and no windows version will unless they are going for major changes in their OS. But changing the OS that dramatically with have some major drawbacks as the customer probably demands that old software must still work with the new OS. That's not an easy task for MS.
hmmm, XP doesn't replace shit over here. It won't even install on my P200 with 48MB memory wich is still running win95.
(I do have more powerfull machines, but they all run Linux and putting windows on those machines is too much of a torture both for me and the hardware.)
I can advice this too. I've been using labview a long time already and it's very effective. I've also been using this for a long time (8 years now) and very happy with this choice. Runs on Linux,Windows,MacOS, HP-UX, Solaris 2 as far as I can tell.
"I prefer listening to musicians who play music because they enjoy it, not for the money"
Those could be the most popular in future because they can just share their music on the web, therfore have good advertisement and lots of live gigs:-)
Only thing forgotten in this is the "expensive" studio's you may need to record in a decent quality.
So, for you it is enough when someone samples the analog signal, converts it to MP3 and shares it. So much for copy protection.
I do wonder if this record company will see any changes in record sales after the implementation of this copy protection. I quess it will just cost them a lot of money to implement it and the consumer will have to pay for that eventually. Of course the consumer won't do that and sharing becomes even more popular...........

Just what I was thinking. Would be very nice to see this happen.
What I find strange in this whole article is that Microsoft actually develops things that already exist and do not need improvement (or whatever). How do they justify such useless developments within their company ? Or are their developers just left on their own to come up with some code just for the sake of developing something ?
can't even show one language in a dialog box. It's english with Dutch (Ja,Nee). I hope the guy installed this software from his Twilight DVD (nice test:-) ).

Well, the same would apply to Adobe's Photoshop and other product. Would be interesting to see that happen.

I will buy MSOffice when it supports Limburgs and Fries. :-)
Which, will never happen
I don't agree to that.

right, same for me.
It just crashes all the time and that I certainly won't miss.
Someone made a mistake than....

And they are still able to convince a judge that this is a fair deal :-)
Go figure out who hired the best lawyers.
Yes,but in a different way. :-)
They probably exceed the maximum allowed noise level of their car

yes, what actually wonders me is how they manage to crack down avifile for doing this (long time ago) and now doing the same thing themselves.
pretty pathetic if you need to learn sex on the web, don't you think ?
:-)
BTW, there are many chinese on this planet, which proves that you don't need the web to learn anything about that
