    And that's why you never, ever run or even risk running a red in NYC. The cabbies are experts at timing the lights, and they will enter the intersection the instant it turns green. And they can hit you without taking any real damage. Plus, if you don't enter the instant the light turns, everyone behind you will lean on their horn. Something I miss since I moved to Georgia, where everyone is a Nascar fan, yet wait several seconds before hitting the gas.

    The other direction turns red, count to three and go. Or one, or two, whatever it is for that street. Cab drivers are experts at it.

    There might be someone running the light, but fuck it, hit them. It's their fault and you need a new car.

    I think the principle pre-dates the US, coming from British common law. The first time it was used in the US was to seize a pirate ship.

    Still, the concept is nonsense. They file criminal charges against property, which, being inanimate, cannot possibly commit any act of any sort.

    I think the story about a Russian error in translating TV listings was more interesting. At the height of the crisis, US TV stations were scheduled to re-run a speech by Kennedy on the crisis. Russians didn't grasp the concept of re-runs, so they thought he had a new speech scheduled, and assumed it would be a declaration of war. So they pulled out of Cuba.

    My girlfriend is a realtor. She was advertising on Zillow. Every month, Zillow charges the wrong account, and charges the wrong amount. Every month, they say they'll fix it, but not only do they not fix it, they refuse to refund the excess charges. Yes, that's right, every month we say "We owe you $200, you took $400.", they say, "Sorry, we'll charge you $200 next month, but you can't have the excess $200 back. And we're going to charge you another $400 regardless."

    Hey! That toolbar gives you the valuable convenience of being able to search right from a box at the top of your browser!

    Maybe in some mythical perfect future, browsers will be able to search from the address bar. Until that fantastical day arrives, the Google toolbar will remain a necessary extension.

    I support your pedantry, but to the OP's other point about Google being too close they do still have a toolbar. Not malware, but certainly unwanted and utterly useless.

    Sure, I've run into the Start Menu issue the author describes on some computers. Found a fix in wiping the tile database, but it's been months since I last saw it happen. There have been some other small annoyances, like the "copy default profile" deployment bug, and how the "modern app" sandbox doesn't allow programs (like Edge) read a print code entered into a driver popup for our office printers, but other than those relatively minor issues I'm loving it.

    It's my favorite Windows since 7, and there are new conveniences - like the right-click Start menu - whose absence infuriates me in 7.

    What the hell would they need that for? They aren't allowed to talk to anyone outside the very compact and contiguous borders of NK, so why bother? You don't need a satellite to talk to someone 200 miles away. Terrestrial radio is far more efficient and effective for a tiny, technologically underdeveloped, nation like NK. If they even managed to get it into orbit, what the hell would they do with it?

    In my experience anyhow. I have a WRT1200AC running OpenWRT, and last I checked (couple weeks ago) support is all over the place. Builds are forked with feature support scattered across them.

    is there any advantage to Libre? I have a full license for Office 365 through my job, so the obvious price advantage isn't relevant to me. I also only use linux headless on my servers, so platform support isn't an issue. Is there anything Libre has/does that MS Office doesn't? Unique or improved features I might like? (feel free to make wild assumptions about my preferences)

    I have a Vizio 3d smart TV. It's around 4 years old, so things may be crazier now but I never had any of the issues described. My only problem is that they stopped updating the software and I don't think the Yahoo! platform it's based on is still supported. Pretty sure it was deprecated the year after I bought it. Its also pretty slow. That said, most functions are easy to access/find, have sensible names, and the remote has buttons for things like Netflix, Amazon, 2d/3d modes, etc.
