They don't advertise powerboost for UPSTREAM. Only downstream. And I'm paying for the "premium" service and I only get upstream 768Kb/s or higher for the first 15 seconds, then it drops to 30K/s.
I recently moved from one house serviced by comcast to another and I can tell you there is DEFINTELY something screwy going on, and it's not just bittorrent trafic.
I've done bandwidth tests and my upstream STARTS at a nice 1.5MB/s and then 15 seconds later drops to 30K/s EVERY TIME.
What this does is give false results when people are doing speed tests. When you do your test you get great results (in my case 15Mb/s downstream and almost 2Mb/s upstream) for the first 15 or 20 seconds. Then after that it just BLOWS.
DOCSIS 2 which is what most cable companies are deploying now for internet services is roughly 40Mb/s down and 30Mb/s upstream. Now their infrastructure might have to be upgraded (like their connection to the backbone internet providers) but current cable modem technology has no problem handling those speeds (what Verizon is offering)
It's called the High performance wireless research network. Firefighters and police have been using it for communications in past fires and are undoubtedly using this time as well.
Well obviously if this is affecting you should drop Comcast and chose from the 3 or 4 other major broadband providers that can provide megabit service to your home.
Oh..that's right...there aren't any other major providers in your area....

Factoring out the MORAL issues with using it for such a use, just remember you STILL pay 10cents per CPU per hour and still pay the Amazon S3 storage and transfer rates.
So that botnet could get quite expensive (and if you are an Evil Black hat, why bother? There are a million unpatched windows systems waiting around on the net for the hat to use).
And yes....I know you were trying to make a joke.:)

Yea, I should of said "theoretically" as it's obvious that Amazon does not have an unlimited amount CPU's. I'm surprised google did not come up with something like this first.

EC2 allows you to bring up in seconds 10 or 10,000 Xen instances or Virtual Machines of practically any LINUX type (Xen instances).
Don't compare it to a hosting service where you pay for the month. With this you could script your web site to automatically start up instances on EC2 as demand increased, doing load balancing for example and then as the demand went down you could automatically shut down virtual machines.
The cool part of this service (and there are competitors) is the ability to bring up VM's on demand for whatever either automated or manually.
I find it interesting that even though the common belief that the internet is immune to sensorship is accepted pretty much by the entire tech community that the chinese are going full steam ahead anyway.
Just goes to show you that there are people who believe THEY CAN do what others say can't be done.
What will happen to our cherished belief of the invulnerability of the internet to censorship IF the chinese actually succeed?
Just because you believe in something does mean it is actually true
It just occurred to me, not that they would do this since Qtopia has been good about not TIVOing stuff, but if it was under the GPLv2 (instead of v3) couldn't they lock down the phone with anti DRM software? In Which case legally under the DMCA it would be illegal for anybody load any modified code on to the phone?
The heck with Vista, they should just dump the OS and sell the Windows API with a per seat license.
Here is my reasoning....
The OS biz gets them too much bad press. The real dominance is with the Windows API's. If they licensed the API's to OS vendors so that any OS could run "Windows" programs - recompiled against the API of course they could charge 70 or 80 bucks per seat still make LOADS of money, maybe even more than they are now. The upside is that they don't have to worry about all the horrible engineering that's needed to deal with an OS.
The world uses Windows Applications. Does it matter HOW you get your money? If you can get it selling per seat licenses at the same rate as per copy of Windows it would be a win for MS.
How long it will last will depend on HOW MUCH is used. I predict we (the planet) will be using more power than predicted over the long term, thus it will be less than several centuries.
The news sites I've read have stated that the contract AT&T and Apple has REQUIRES Apple to make an honest attempt at keeping people on AT&T or AT&T can invalidate their(Apple's) cut of the subscription sales.
If you don't think AT&T is watching every move Apple is making to nail them for it and take back any percentage of the subscription profits then you are naive.
You are also not taking into account that if you try and attack me with a 2by4 I'm going to VIGOROUSLY defend myself.

Given what I've seen in the past and knowing how greedy telecommunications companies are, I doubt the above statement.

All this sounds like griping from people who hacked their phone to unlock it.
What did you expect? Now that Apple will probably brick your hacked phone you are pissed off. You took the risk.

The Mac version is problematic. Both for Intel and PPC. Crashing and big time CPU hog has been a problem for some time now.
It's only GNU/LINUX if you are talking about the OS incorrectly!
If you are only talking about the Kernel then you CAN just say "LINUX"
