I agree with many posters that Python is the way to go: it's consistent, easy to learn, extremely readable, and (dare I say it) fun.
But I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned pygame yet. pygame is a game programming library for Python. it makes for some excellent tinkering, and I suck at programming.
In the future server-side browser detection may be more about detecting whether the browser supports the DRM your "web service" uses than what version of Javascript or CSS the browser supports.
I'll second Knoppix. It autoconfigures better than anything else I've seen and, though it's designed to be run off of a CD, can easily be installed. And it's Debian, so updating it is easy.
Now if I could only get sound working.
I keep waiting for AOL to release a bootable CD-Rom that completely bypasses Windows. Just about the only thing they were missing was a browser - now they have that too.
Having to reboto every time you want to go online? Sounds like a smashing idea.

btw, is it illegal to get mp3s through file-sharing if you lost a CD?
Of course - if your copy of Hooky Kooky Lend Me Your Comb gets stolen, and you produce a new copy of it out of the ether, there is now one more copy in existence. You've just lowered the value of every other copy out there by increasing supply. For shame!
I had a Speak n' Spell when I was young. It eventually got whacked a few too many times and its database somehow scrambled:
SnS: Now spell: "Erkngwhkfzgnkil". Me:[A] [P] [P] [L] [E] [Enter] SnS: Incorrect. Please try again. Me:[M] [O] [N] [K] [E] [Y] [Enter] SnS: Incorrect. Please try again. Me:[S] [T] [U] [P] [I] [D] [Enter] SnS: Incorrect. The correct spelling of "Erkngwhkfzgnkil" is: S A U C E R.
It was great! Sadly, it sounds nothing like the "Random Noise" or "Glitch" mp3s. I'm disappointed.
I have no problem with nudity or offensive language, but all in proper context. The above paragraph just makes the whole thing sound like a stupid joke.
I like the idea of out-of-context porn-- but, then, that's the sort of thing I find funny. I'm hoping someday some Killer App will be written with an (unchangeable) porn skin. Then everyone who wants to use it will have to see porn! Tee hee!
Open office is the worst office suite I have ever used, and I am not even kidding.
I sympathize with this troll. OOo is sluggish, and, more importantly, difficult to use. I spent a day trying to make a presentation with it, and oh my god. Doing anything was a huge ordeal. Eventually I installed Powerpoint, and doing the rest of the presentation was so easy.
The OOo UI is on crack.
On the other hand, OOo has loads of functionality. Which is nice, but not as nice as being useable in the first place. I want GoBe!
After installing four file-sharing applications (with spyware), three cute yet inspirational screensavers, a wallpaper changer, an "internet accelerator", and countless email virii, the average user will happily buy a new computer now that the old one is slow and crashes all the time.
Or is J. Q. User expected to attempt a reinstallation of Windows? I shudder to imagine certain members of my family trying that.
(Disclaimer: I use OE, and have never suffered from an email virus)
Ok let me ask something. In Windows there is what we call "The task bar (tm)". With "The task bar", every window has a tab.
Now what is the use of having these tabs in a bar in the browser window, instead of having them in "The task bar" hmmm ?
Okay, Using IE, open up a link as a new window-- in the background.
(As you're not a tabbed-browsing kind of guy you might not know how incredibly useful this is.)
/me likes gobe, can't wait until they release the GPL'd version
They've been very quiet about it, haven't they? I Google "gobeproductive gpl" every few weeks, and can find nothing at all new. Makes me wonder if it's actually going to happen.

You know that there's nothing that Mozilla can do about people writing browser-specific code, right? What do you hope to achieve by bitching to us about it?
In addition, IE meshes with Explorer. So I can easily switch between Explorer and Internet explorer.
While I admit that is often useful, it's not really the purpose of a web browser to also be a file manager. The reason IE does this is so MS can claim its part of the OS. (Correct me if I'm wrong)
Now try it in IE, it's different.
You do realize that many people who don't use IE view this (oft-used) argument as a troll. Mozilla simply can't (and shouldn't) follow in IE's footsteps all of the time. I mean-- for one thing, that would make Mozilla IE's bitch!
Another usability problem is the placement of the Address bar. Why is it at the same layer as the toolbar?
You're right, a bug has been posted about this(172818), and (AFAIK) it is planned for a future release. We all want more screen space.
but of course... nobody cares about Usability issues.
Hey... hey... now, you know that's just not true. Come on, pumpkin, buck up. I care, don't I? (I'm sorry, but that was such a troll)
And that "Toolbar Customizer" with the drag and drop has bad usability problems.
Really? I found it pleasing and easy to use. Why don't you stop by the Phoenix Forums and share your thoughts on how it can be improved?
Also, the Bookmark Management is very sloppy. They need sidebar management for bookmarks.
Agreed.

no, i know what code bloat comes from
I, however, don't see 'code bloat' as being a plausible excuse to not implement a useful feature
Wow. You really do like your commas, don't you? No wonder you want that feature.;)
I convinced my sister-in-law to give up AOL. It costs more, it's slower, and half the people who see your email address assume you're an idiot. (The other half, of course, being other AOL-users)
So I found her an (half the price) ISP, showed her how to do email, surf the web, etc.
One week later, "I'm switching back."
Reason?
It's not pretty. And she missed the voices.
I know!
I am obliged to mention that my SIL is not an idiot.
Will I have my hair cut, get my car hot-waxed, or buy a $13 hammer?

Penny Arcade's critique of the iPod?
Without the GPL or, say, a Win32 emulation thingy, it doesn't seem viable.

It's a common mistake. The keys are right next to each other.
It's both! And there's even an appropriate term: Aggressive + Suicidal = Kamikaze

Sure he does porn spam -- he just doesn't tell his wife!
Instead, he sends e-mail come-ons for things like online casinos...
Seriously, though, which is more damaging to people: Gambling or porn? If he's trying to do "the right thing", I think he's made the wrong choice.
