If I was a kid today I'd probably be institutionalized.
When I was in 1st grade or so the Vietnam War was on the news all the time and I was just getting into plastic model building. My favorite thing to do was to build Army tanks and helicopters and play war with them. One day at school we had to write a little story and draw a picture with it. I wrote little scenario where a bunch of Army tanks and helicopters were blowing a bridge with a bunch of NVA crossing it (didn't know what a NVA was, they were just the bad guys). The picture had lots of explosions and bodies flying everywhere. It was very colorful and had a lot of detail. I got a good mark for my creativity.
In the afternoon we'd play Army with plastic guns that looked liked the real thing. None of this pink gun shit. We didn't shoot imaginary dinosaurs. We were out hunting Germans and Japanese soldiers. Whoever got stuck being the enemy would at least have fun hamming up his death scene. I guess it wasn't such a big deal back then because I grew up in San Diego and there were more than a few WWII vets that would egg us on.
I don't look forward to seeing what our world will be like when the current crop of kids grow up to be our nation's leaders.
Real estate in Fremont is expensive but more *affordable* housing can be had in the nearby communities of Milpitas and Newark. In any case, Fremont is much, much cheaper than Palo Alto and surrounding communities (I'm leaving East PA out of that consideration).
Just north of the Fremont plant is undeveloped land that is right next to the new BART station. They could build there allowing employees to take mass transit and also be within walking distance of the factory. If they out grow the space, or hit lean times, they should be able to rent the space at a premium since it is next to the station.
That was true until MS brought the ribbon then it was "Why is IT forcing me to upgrade?"
Now it's happening again with the latest Office with their Metro-ized GUI.
First thing I did when I got a new shiny laptop with Office 2013 was install LibreOffice so I can focus on working, and not relearning how to do my usual tasks with a new UI.
Actually what I really did first was install VMWare and get Xubuntu installed but you get my point.
Without RTFA, have they surveyed our dumps and sewers? I'm sure there are a huge number of new species that are arising out of our garbage just waiting to take over. I just hope they don't have a hanker'n for BBQ humans.
Just run XFCE, MATE, and any other XP like desktop and be done with it. Don't waste time with Unity, Gnome 3, the latest KDE, etc.
Honestly, if you working on Linux and you are pissing around trying to get your desktop customized to your liking, then you really aren't working, are you?
Race and gender don't matter. Only skill set, experience, soft skills, etc. We do, however, discriminate a little, mainly on what school you graduated from, or for those with graduate degrees, who was your advisor.
If you are woman or minority that got into tech through Codeschool and the like, you won't be working in my shop. We only hire people with real CS and engineering degrees that have done their time learning more than the web language|framework flavor or the month.
The only natural predator of trailer homes are tornadoes. Are we prepared for the inevitable population explosion if we defeat tornadoes in the Mid-West? I don't think we'll be able to build Wal-marts fast enough.
With Qt you can develop for desktop or mobile, with a GUI or not. With Python you can do simple scripting all the way up to full-blown apps. Once you become familiar with Qt you can also fallback to C++ if you need the performance. You also have the option using Qt's GUI as traditional widget or Javascript based Qt Quick.
Haven't signed a contract in 3 or so years since I left Sprint (and Verizon before that). I've been on T-Mobile with their sort of hidden $30/month plan of 5Gb 4G data, unlimited text, 100 talk minutes. I say it's sort of hidden because this rate is only available if you start a new account online. I never gab on the phone but I do surf and stream alot so this works for me. Currently using a Galaxy SII which is more than good enough.
Not long at all. Government agencies are already looking into automobile kill switches. We KNOW they are already illegally spying on us. Why give them one more way they can subjugate us?
Of course they'll never agree to adopt the technology. First, it means you can't use your buddy's backup weapon if your weapon malfunctions. Second, it won't be long before the technology becomes available to jam the system so you can't fire your weapon.
a black Attorney General, black Supreme Court Justices, black Secretaries of State, and numerous black Senators and Congressmen. Yet there have been few Latinos in the upper echelons of the government and even few Asians.
I think affirmative action has already done it's job and is no longer needed.
Got it as a gift from Dad when I started junior high in the '70s. I used it daily until I got an HP-11c. I lost the HP sometime in grad school but I still have the Sharp and still use it. I always preferred LEDs over LCDs anyways.
QST comes with membership in the ARRL but can also be found in some radio and electronics stores. QEX cost extra but is worth it if you are really deep into building your own stuff. Nuts and Volts is pretty good too. There are electronic versions of these three but I'll only pay for the printed version. If they go electronic only I won't renew my subscription.
Many tech workers with kids and who want a house live down there where it's cheaper. Set up office down there (too) and hire the 30+ set. It will take some of the pressure off of their Mountain View facilities. And it was dumb to expand into SF. It was ridiculously expensive already and very hostile to big business, even ones that are liberal and cool.
First, pack at least couple solar powered calculators. You can get cheap scientific calculators at the dollar store. They'll be worth their weight in gold during the second Renaissance. Second, don't give the mathematician any weapons. Let him be a mule, carrying any tech books you find along the way. Give him a pencil and pad of paper and let him re-derive the whole of known mathematics.
Yes, but are their business units in France the ones that do well? Or is their satellite offices in other countries like the UK and Germany that pick up the slack?
A benefit with Palo Alto and surrounding communities is that you can actually find parking. And it's almost always free! Or if you like to ride a bike, the roads are actually bike friendly. The streets are wide and many with dedicated bike lanes. And for the weekend trek, there are many scenic routes with little or no traffic.
Live in SF? Hell no!
Disclosure: I'm in Mountain View.
And there is no way they are going to shutdown their production and usage of coal. This plan would essentially put them in the driver's seat of the world economy.
Hello Larry,
Since you are an EE and started out hacking systems together, I assume you loved working with technology and the open source down at the nuts and bolts level. Now you are a suit, a very successful business man running companies that serve business (CRM!). What's the appeal of sitting in Board meetings, wheeling and dealing on the phone or in teleconferences and all that?
It seems to me, if you still had a passion for tech, you would have taken your riches and either started a new company on something cool. Or just retire and use your free time to play with tech.

Yea but if it got rid of social media and insipid reality shows, it might be awash.

give the toddlers a bunch of building blocks and hang the tablet from the ceiling.

It's 4:30 over there. Quit'n time. You'll have to wait until 9am tomorrow before anyone over there is allowed to answer.
