    North American ATM's can't now do half of what Japanese ATMs could do 10 years ago.

    -Work with coins.
    -Dispense any random amount not just multiples of 20's.
    -Transfer between differnt branc accounts.
    -Carry out wire transfers.

    There are probably valid reasons for this but I have always felt hamstrung by local ATMs since moving back.

    The terms "Left-click" and "Right-click" are a manifestation of a right-hand-centric view of the world.

    If you notice that no matter in which hand you hold a mouse or whatever trackpad you use, the index finger is the primary click and the middle finger will be the context click.

    SO, why not change the terminology to "index click" and "middle-click"?

    All those posters trying to teach their parents, see if you get better uptake this way. They will definitely know which is their index and middle fingers.

    It might depend upon the type of evidence presentation. I was involved in a case of a pedestrian struck by a car at a bare street corner. Pictures were taken of the site months after the accident but by then a crosswalk had been painted on the road and crosswalk signs put up.

    To give the jury a clear picture, so to speak, of the conditions of the location at the time, I photoshopped out any trace of the crosswalk. The court permitted the use of the photos on the condition that it was known they had been modified.

    I have owned and read How to Win Friends... for years but was never able to practically implement the suggestions until I took the course.

    There are exercises you go through that really snap you awake and force you to confront what what has been holding you back.

    Yes, you will get up in front of those 40+ other people and tell them how you will be a calm, confident IT Manager in 12 weeks.

    And you will fucking believe it.

    You haven't lived until you've experienced the pleasure of a toilet-seat bidet. These are becoming a standard fixture in Japanese homes. If you think North Americans have a good sense of hygiene (Slashdot denizen excepted), think again.

    You know how winbind dynamically assigns UIDs and GIDs to windows domain users and saves them in a .tdb database right?

    You know how Winbind works with Samba right?

    You set a UID and GID range in smb.conf like so:

    winbind uid = 10000-20000
    winbind gid = 10000-20000

    So your user billg gets assigned UID 10004 for example.

    Now this is all running fine until you run up2date samba or do a manual upgrade and you get the new version that suppports machine accounts. All of a sudden 10004 is now the UID for MYDELLPC$ and Bill has lost access to his files.

    Lovely little gotcha.

    When you add a great new feature such as supporting Windows machine accounts on Samba make sure your user community is aware that it will completely screw up rights assignments on your servers as the new machine accounts get assigned to old user UIDs by winbind.

    I just spent a harried morning resetting all files back to their correct owners and groups.

    He owned the spreadsheet market and saw it lost to Microsoft through no fault of his own. (He'd left Lotus by then)

    However, he was never able to experience the same success. No matter how much hype and support his subsequent projects had, they never panned out in the long run.

    FireFox could very much be the same thing. It's a long way from 2% market share to 98%.

    Large vertical-market accounting system (Elite) with .NET-based web time-entry interface that absolutely, positively requires IE.

    Word using Interwoven Desksite Content Management System. Call me when an Open Source CMS can intercept OpenOffice File-Save and File-Open to present a metadata profile dialog or folder structure that assigns metadata based on the folder in which the document is stored. No frickin uploads.

    Anything else could probably run in Wine.

    There is an effort to put together a Law firm Distribution (LAWnix) but right now it's just picking the best pieces.

    I would suspect more than a few companies are in this situation.

    Prepare for the chants of "but it will after more development!"

    Doesn't matter. It isn't needed. It tries to address a threat that is not there now and NEVER will be. Even the most hare-brained dictator knows that lobbing ICBMs at the U.S. mainland isn't going to work and will just result in the "liberation" of their country.

    At least some of the world is trying to abandon the path of large-scale war and high-tech weapons as a means of resolving disputes and protecting your interests. Financial war can be messy but at least you don't get this.

    As the article states and others have pointed out, the tech revolution is being driven by the young people living at home with O-tosan and O-kaasan.

    My parents in law won't even use the VCR bought for them by my brother-in-law let alone set the time.

    When in Japan I loved going to Japanese Hot Spring resorts (Onsen). I even set up a website about them.

    After moving back I brought the feeling with me by marketing this line of Onsen-inspired bath powders.

    We discussed this over lunch today. Except for one outage that had us down for a day and the occasional power outage the ROLM has run non-stop for nigh on 17 years.

    Any PC-based system must be fault-tolerant. At least having a second pre-configured PC around is cheaper than a full PBX. Hell I could have five backups available including a couple off-site.

    I have two Asterisk boxes; one at home for play and the other sitting at the office as a backup ready to take over if our 20-year-old ROLM switch dies.

    I got a quote yesterday from our interconnect on the cost to add a couple of T1 cards to the ROLM so we can get off the excessive copper trunks we have: C$69,000! For that much I can create a complete Asterisk-based VOIP system with far more abilities.

    The other quote for a new traditional Siemens PBX was in the range of C$180K. So why would I want to buy a traditional PBX vs building something on Asterisk? Difficulty: 180-user law firm.
