Bandwidth for one. Why would I want my lab of X amount of computers using up bandwidth on data that isn't used for stupid things. Cases in point, streaming video, audio, large-file downloads..
Once bandwidth is saturated, a sysadmin can say, "Well, the university is saturating the line. This is how its being used. Either restrict access to these required sites or up the bandwidth."
Well... that's a matter of how you write it, no? I mean to say what's the difference between 106 (what an odd number) processors on this machine, using different threads for each processor versus 106 seperate machines doing the work?
Perhaps in terms of redundancy, mixed cpu speeds, eetc, in the most generic sense, they are the same. Of course, their layout, implementation etc, are QUITE different.
But now its a matter of updating a few binaries. Simply recompile, and use a system such as rdist to through the new binaries out there.
Just a matter of hupping all your servers.
Note, rdisting/hupping systemtically to make sure you don't down a cluster of servers is required. Once the little bit of programming is in place, it's really not that hard to update all the time.
With IIS, there are DLL's and binaries to update, which we don't have a list of. Well, the list isn't the one time I installed IIS. Apache has a bit more obvious since you set a single prefix directory to install to, so just a "find . -type f" will give you a straight list. To boot, the number of files is small. Even better, it compresses well to send across a network.
*sigh* I'm talking about logically it should overflow.:P And before sniping, make sure not to make yourself look like an ass first by assuming everything is written in a particular language. Or are you not gonna bitch and whine that its missing proper documentation etc etc..
Do you have any possible solutions? Its tough to prohibit use of something so familiar in our lives. Jay walking in NYC, your freedom to smoke.
Would a more military state be.. required? Like the concept of preventers in Gundam Wing Endless Waltz, where there are political fire fighters who put out fires such as terrorist acts. Yet, more civilized means would be condoned.
Just food for thought, I don't have a perfect stance yet...
Our ISP, where I work, has been pretty much been shut down due to the attack. They were located downtown manhattan ( NYC != Manhattan alone:P ). Luckily, our CTO was a little bit ahead of the game and we've always had a backup T1 that goes through Globix.
Lesson learned? Even if its an ISDN line, hell, even a modem.. have a backup resource for your company. Well, maybe not a modem.. but DSL would be a nice backup too:) Just to get the email and access to our own sites running until we are back to normal. Well.. back to normal if Promenet comes back up:(
Mac version is pretty solid too. Only problem is under Mac's JVM, if you are running out of memory, new objects don't always get created.. so new connections, new widgets don't show up when you are low on mem.:)
In the ideal form, a boolean would overflow after 1. So yeah, in C++ if you defined it as a long, it'll work fine. The mental logic behind using a bool in this case is wrong.
Well, lets not forget there are other methods. You can do it with certificates. Point being is the fact THEY don't trust their products says a lot.
What would make us happy is if they made their.net architecture open. Their implementation I care a rat's ass about. Same thing with wma, 'cept we don't care about wma that much. Real audio/video, quicktime, there are problems because the algorithms are so closed source, many don't benefit.
I think its all that and worse. Not only will we not play with their toys, they won't play with their toys. By pushing off the responsibility to someone else, MS gets less linelight. Think of it, what's worse: releasing software that's buggy or being the source of the problem?
Think of it, do you yell at the people who invented telnet or do you yell at the person who left the daemon running allowing root access? Probably the latter since its his responsibility not to use it in the first place.
I share your sentimates (s?). My best friend worked in there until last year. Another best friend works across the street, near debris. I was just there saturday and tuesday of last week.
The most dishartning came from a friend: Someone from WTC 2 was on the phone with a friend outside of manhattan (NYC != Manhattan). The end of the conversation was escentially, "A plane just went through WTC 1" and the line went dead. I don't know if she survived, but evacuations did start when the first building was on fire. Sorry Windows users ;)
Wouldn't it be a mixed blessing if the label didn't do any of those things for Britney Spears? (/joke)
So in a way, it does replace clusters, in that it replaces that slower networking down. Of course, now its eggs all in one basket.

Wll, there wasn't a list the one time I installed IIS. Ug

Right, and it never gets past 1. My point exactly.

If you weren't being sarcastic, you are scaring me. If you are, the way you wrote it is scaring me :)
Must...stop..bad..shatner..method...acting... :)

But hey, its one kickin' client.
Read that as Gnumerica :)

Thank GOD we have kerberos and mpeg 4 :P

They should have quoted kindergarden cop, "Its not a tumor." Wonder how many people would have gotten it too..
XML. Sorry.. couldn't help it :)
Considering that jordan et al are always working on freebsd, there's no reason why they would not depend on the project again later for fixes etc...

Just planting a seed of thought. I can't run with this since i haven't a clue what tools are available...
Your points are valid, but i think you are debating something i never mentioned... or at lesat never intended to imply..
We'll just have to create large fans to generate the wind. Wonder where can we find power for that. :) (/joke)
