unfortunatly you miss the point. broadband is not even installed in a lot of areas (melb metro). no more cable being laid now. even if you where lucky enough to live in an area cabled you have to have telphone poles. that leaves purchasing a dish.
ahhh what about ADSL - well telecom in all it's wisdom will only implement it on what it considers are *conditioned lines*. meaning again only selected areas in the metro area are installed - others a lot of others miss out (mine included) with no planned installation date in the future.
this leaves you with ISDN at about $1000/month and extra costs.
this is in metro areas of the . what about the rest of the country. telstra is a joke, high standards or not it fails to deliver even a basic broadband service (forget the price) as it does conventional phone access.

it would be good if you expanded this idea on prolonged exposure and the heat effects on a specific area of the brain (say just where the tip of the phone is located). Is it possible that repeated heating/cooling can have some biological effect at cellular level on the immediate surrounding area? I wonder how brain tissue behaves with such exposure?

I wish things could be that simple. The alternatives on Linux for example are not an option as we (.au) have recently implemented GST (goods and sales tax). As there is no *nix port of their software (MYOB), they have no choice. '...useit.com is an informative site - it features the forgotten side of software development, usability...'
Hi Jakob,
Q1. How well in your opinion does slashdot rate as a study of usability and site design? Q2. What are the areas that need attention?
I ask this because the code for the slashdot site, (slashcode) is open sourced and many (new) developers use slashdot as a guide for developing their own sites.
This news isn't interesting for normal slashdos readers. This download is for windows users only and it's only the command line compiler tools with very little documentation and a few examples.
I have a different slant for this article. Borland have stated they intend to release delphi to linux. And if you look at the results of the JUL99 survey, the first Q/A they asked was 1. which language ared you primarily interested in developing in on linux? Of course the answer was C/C++. So what better way to pave for delphi (and release of cpp builder?) to linux than to allow users (windows developers - their primary target) to download a free (but older) compiler to get used to.
What does perplex me is the later question, 3.The particular development tool I would most like to see for Linux is - (sic), the answer was a race between c/c++ with rad (cpp builder) and a new IDE that works with existing linux tools. Maybe thats what the Jbuilder gui was about?
Go have a look at the results of the survey to gain a better idea of where borland is heading...cpp builder on kde/gnome using native gui (or wine) that's most likely not open sourced as long as it's high quality and costing between US$100 - US$300.
Where is MicroMozilla, or MicroLinux? a lot of examples fo r MicroLinux can be found here at,
embedded linux - including Red Hat Tools for Embedded Developers
EL/IX Application Programming Interface - an embedded application programming interface Graphical IDE - cold fusion Hard Hat Linux - os for embedded appls mobile linux - allows linux to work on very small devices
however I agree with browsers... very few free open sourced browsers (for embedded systems) can be found (that I know of). The only one I can think of that could be suitable is being produced by Opera (thats not released and it's cli and not open source. I remember reading about this in an interview on/. but cannot find it. Opera developed a cli version and may release it.). But perhaps each device will have a browser developed for it by the manufacturer (or purchased). I dont see how MS can win in this arena as they dont have control the operating system and they can't possibly produce a browser to fit each system and respect the gui. More important is the protocol to transmit the information (follow to the next message)...

In addition, we pay royalties to Activision based on sales of the Linux version. this question gets asked about once every few months. I guess that consumers have to realise that the purchase of one ports does not necessarily entitle you to obtain the binary for another platform, without paying (in full).
