damn, these guys are fast...i can still remember the weeks i played the original quake demo (quake classic?) along with 20 others in a the pokey levels (the start of quake)...i tell ya try doing this with 20 yelping and screaming programmers on a lan is something to behold:)....
it doesn't matter when the arena-test (then demo) comes out, the wait is well worth it. now to go out and get some hardware to run the sucker..forget more's law...who's ever hear of software kicking along the hardware purchase cycle.
...we (DONT) think of it as a competitor in the student and hobbyist market..
i couldn't help but noticing last week brosing thru a local technical bookstore ( http://www.mcgills.com.au ) that M$ is vigerously attacking this market with certification books stacked 3 levels high, 30 feet in length (that cost mind u in the order of $'000's) for m$ certification. The number of books is quite staggering..with snappy titles like, 'Microsoft TCP/IP'...
i draw this to fellow '/. ers' because the M$ book publishing market reflects one aspect of microsofts current mindeset, 'to get a large pool of people to invest time (and more importantly $) in M$ products. there is nothing wrong with this, it just doesn't wash with what they say.
yep, mechanics (and their skills) are severly underated... re-building yr kernel is much like stripping down an engine on a car. y've gotta be skilled in the basics to rebuild
I was just thinking the same today, here's an url that takes U to a h/w recog app, called by a mob called http://www.shopcic.com called jot!
I tried the demo for about half a day. I could draw the entire alphabet onscreen (yes on screen) and it had no trouble converting a->z (lowercase, who wants caps) with the exception of the letter, "t" which used some weird t, certainly not the plain cursive script I tried.
the demo sucked (nagware that timed out after 15 minutes use...required U to restart the app). The demo application itself worked fine (noticed a few gui bugs) but when I uninstalled it I got a fatal and my P3 had to be rebooted.
I'd buy it if I could get myself to fork over the US$40
I'm thinking hard to think what apple could bring to the pilot party
biomass - more sales
funky pilot colors - who wants a green one?
more apps & s/w dev - conduits and apps to iMac?
marketing muscle - create demand for biomass
r&d - faster ways get data from iMac palm to iMac and vicky versa
apples good a grabbing an idea and running with it and marketing it, to 'hell'. If this rumour is true, lets see if they can hook the palm into more yummy consumer products they keep saying they are concentrating on:)
nice touch, to see someone checking and verifying what appears to be an uncredited article.
I'm somewhat cautious in commenting until there are more substatiated confirmation. I read the article. I could not see any news source quoted here. I could not see any journo's name credited.
it's often said the first casulty of war is the truth....interested to see what the journo's report
(www.gaslight.com.au +10 tracks+$20)==CD

had this for a long time (1 year at least) in melbournes gaslight record shop, http://www.gaslight.com.au/
pick any 10 track from the cd's in the box and U can create your own cd for $20. It's developed by a local company (who's name I have forgotten).
>Do Palms have a search function for notes and >scraps and such? If I jot notes from a class for >example, or a conference, or a business >meeting, I've been using my palm at work for about 4-5 months now and this is exactly what I use it for.
diary for setting meetings, recording daily schedule
xpense account for purchases
reading a book on the way to work (aportisDoc)
chess
reading todays wired (via AvantGo)
searching for items (by assigning each a nuique code, usually a few letters say vl for volts (yeah I record the battery voltage each day)
>can I do a search for a keyword or a person, >and get back the related notes? yes, see above. If U can afford one, buy at least a pilot professional (you will require TCP/IP, not found in the earlier models)...the Palm iiix is a good bet, 2 the mem of a P3 and a few other nifty upgrade options (not found in the flashy overpriced P4)
sure...(for avantgo users) but if U go to the wired site, http://www.wired.com/news_drop/palmpilot/ you will see the ad is in text, not a chunky heavy weight graphic.
it's all a matter of bandwidth. this requires a different mindset.
I second that, just installed AV on my machine and giving it a bash....the log gave numerous time-outs for the pages, I got like 93 files 256Kb and that's without images...spose a pearl mod could extract just the headings OR i could set the AV options to a particular url that generates only headings (or my customised url)...I'll post how it goes:)
in the prefs page you assign a number to the order . I reckon the on-screen icons are grouse but it took me 15 minutres to juggle 4 blocks to get slash-stats to the top...gotta admit this is one very cool customization..virtual bears for rob..cheers!
but studied law!, it amazes me the number of so-called smart people who study law, on eof the most archane, protected professions I can think of. and certainly up there with accountants
while ms eisenburg may appear techno-savvy, when it comes to lawyers & IT - 'high maintenance users" with attitude is about all I observe.
>- but at the same time lets support the good guys who made Linux and free software possible.
well stated, how else would I get a freeware compiler (gcc), an editor (emacs) without paying for it. dont see may other free tools avaialable from commercial companies
I think a lot of people have to be thankful to the gnu org. software for free is a dirty word for commercial vendors (especially OS vendors) and before linux I can't think of any other os that was free and a heap of tools to boot.
without fsf and gnu, the growth of linux and even the internet would have been slower (and at least less colourful). but times are changing. the most single important thing gnu has given us is free development environment and tools. this has given developers the ability to create the cool apps out there.
but times are changing. let's face it the majority (!average slashdot usr) does't like (or know) how to use the command prompt. They have been bought up in the 'point&click' generation. these are the people who will now start using gnu based app's, OS's et.,el. (assuming it passes the mum test) . they not concerned with copyleft and simply want the power, ease of use of windows.
we owe the a lot to the gnu movement and I for one question paying a lot for buggy commercial - ware but do the consuming hoards?
damn, your right. I thought this film was going to be made. I read a while ago that Kubrick was working on it. Anyone else know anything about it's fate?

param in the img tag, alt="bar"> for instance.
thus not having to make any changes. use of style sheets is a good idea, must have a look for palm optomised ones.
avantgo customisation for /. is an inappropriate use of technology. why not just get the headers emailed to you?
plain text rules! (and sometimes html sucks, sometimes)

/. lite doesn't cut it for avantgo
- guess I could set stories to less than 10
- it takes ages to download, sync
- problems: cant turn off all graphics (adz) therefore avg hotsync times out and leaves nasty broken images
- turning off all the side bars helps but the LH sidebar remains (pain.i.a.)
- had to point the avg to my prefs page in order for it to get the lite site..meaning the first page I got was my prefs page (hardly compelling reading)
- wired's got a site at http://www.wired.com/news_drop/palmpilot/
- check out the layout (graphics, text & hyperlinks)
- specs (style guide) for avg optomiz. can be found at http://www.avantgo.com/partners/content/styleguid
e / - for
/. to avg friendly a lot more optomisation has to be done
until then I'll be viewingset avg file size (on avg client) to 1.2Mb & isn't still enough space
No Icons (disable topic icon images on stories) ...but not for the adz :(

every time I go to 'prefs' I'm logged in as another user...have to re-login
provbably never find it but I'll look out for it, dynamix makes good games (thinks, 'many hours spent shooting down fw190's in AOE')
who developed 'RISE OF THE DRAGON '?, when was it released etc
I thought it was earlier in 2030's, something to do with 32bit machines?
