instead of targetting the richest person on earth, why not have competition for the poorest? human nature being what it is, I'm sure the results would be fascinating:)

H.G. Wells had this viewpoint of the elite, but I think in reality they are more vicious than helpless. The eloi would be twittering, posting deaths and social faux pas to social sites with great interest, while the morlocks laboured to make reality match their whims.
somewhere in a data warehouse with only a few humans, there are millions of disassociated voices crying out to be heard.
"But it keeps these disassociated files for up to 18 more months for testing and product improvement purposes."
In theory, being able to walk the street and digitally recognize people around you (and vice versa) would be like knowing everyone in a small rural village, except for the added benefit of (match nude images to person), highlight those who match your dating profile/financial status/potential(sale/victim). There might even be an advantage to being early adopters in digitally advantaged lifestyle. Or maybe companies selling fake digital social standing/history/identity.
To use a car analogy, I wonder if having a readout telling you how normally you are behaving ("your anger levels are getting dangerously high, do you want...") would be similar to being conditioned by the presence of a speedometer in a car?
why not have a shimmering full size Catherine Zeta Jones following you around, telling you when people want to converse with you (amusingly in 'their' voice),
and letting you read emails on her back, or wrist...don't get me started on touch enabled gestures for unlocking!
Pity about all those folk with Steve Jobs following them, though.
inflationary spending by numbers is like slashdot following reader response to political stories (like this one) that increase the number of increasingly shrill comments, but lead the direction of the stories away from the science, the insightful analysis of readers in the forefront of technical knowledge, the prime direction of this forum.
If you only look at numbers, your posters will increase up to the point where the focus and direction is completely lost.
lobby interests paying serious money, versus potential voters that don't/hardly contribute.
this will be raised again and again until the funding goes away. It's not that I'm cynical, and these guys are assholes, but more like HFT games the system; those who are paying for results are making things happen over those of us who merely protest.
to the extent that some of us read (as the only person in a restaurant reading a book while eating dinner), there will be devices which allow you to carry your library around while travelling. The others in the world will be watching video, looking up things, etc in a more general purpose device. I wonder if there is a co-relation between those who are content to read (and form their own images) and those who are content to have silences in their life (to contemplate, to think) ?
In a way, to (pretend to) hold voting on privacy changes is a new method for companies to move their customers at a pace that the majority are willing to accept.
call it social mass manipulation, but it might be the wave of our future.

Actually, here in Vancouver, I'm looking forward to watching disaster movies while eating my crunchy ice cream (made from insects)

a human touches a machine interface and is known by their fingerprint. how would a robot be uniquely indentified by humans?
Who stops to type emoticons in the middle of a natural disaster (including switching to the alternate keyboard to get those characters)?
