Ok so it's not an application rewrite. Ok so it is ONLY a 5 line patch.
Does no one here work in an organized company that has rigid procedures such as TESTING?!?!
What about the downtime of those apps while you do the patching and testing and redeployment?
So what if you don't need 2 weeks to write every ASP.NET application in the company. You do need the resources to test each application. No matter how much you try to play down the crisis, this is going to cost the corporations M-O-N-E-Y.
And what happens when MS gets their act together and releases a patch? Are you simply going to run the patch and leave it at that? No need to test all your applications against that new version of ASP.NET? For those of you who write applications that select * from grommets and display tables on a webpage, this might not be a big deal. But those of us doing heavy duty enterprise development will see a higher impact.
IIRC, Java hasn't had any of these type of problems within their development platform.
Dirt cheap for a used XBox but if you intend on using it as a terminal, you need to perform the appropriate mods including the hardware mods so you can connect a keyboard/mouse.
I'm sure you can buy a 2 generation old computer system and it'd be easier.
That first sample is so grainy wtf cares if it's 16MP or 92MP. They couldn't have used a lower ISO setting? It's not like that's a fast moving action shot.
Where I come from, most organizations *want* to log these conversations for security and ethics reasons. Giving the user complete privacy with GPG would not be in the organization's best interest.
3)Living in NYC has it's own advantages. Here, I can go Tango Dancing every day of the week, see the best museums, never have to drive the death machine we call an automobile, can go out drinking without worrying about how I am getting home, can see world class plays, theater, etc. etc. etc. Living in Canada would be a marked decrease in my Life Style. It might be OK for people that don;t care about this kind of stuff, but not for me.
If you actually like to Tango dance everynight, we probably dont want you here;) Although, it is legal for your kind to get married in Canada. LOL
Spend that extra 40% buying 50% more beer because it takes that much to get drunk on your pisswater. NYC isn't the only place with taxis. I'm sure we could find you a taxi here in Toronto...if not a helpful Mountie on horseback might give you a ride home.
Toronto has a thriving theatre district that hosts many world class plays/shows/musicals.
Don't be so haste to lay judgement until you've actually tried it. Toronto isn't NYC but it's not that far off either. Sure there are many places in Canada that don't have what Toronto offers but then the same can be said about NYC vs. BumFuck, Iowa.
More specifically, if your company is using an open source project as the framework for one of their applications and you make changes to the framework (ie. fixes, enhancements), how does that work?
Let's say you fix a bug and release it back to the opensource project. By def'n of most of these contracts, that work should belong to the company and you would be breaking that agreement because you released it to the public.
I wonder how many people have done this and not realized that they have broken the terms of their contract. It's this type of stuff that probably started the entire SCO mess.
Is there something lacking in the java.io package classes that you require using something as hackish as Runtime.exec() ??
Once you go outside the JVM and use System resources, you lose control. And if you're getting "Too many open files" exceptions, tough luck because you've given up control to the OS as opposed to managing with the java.io API's
If you can't do what you need with java.io, then you probably should be using Java. C might be a better choice in this case.
Gotta say, I agree. The only real thing this machine excels at is showing video on a TV.
Gotta say, I disagree. This is a gaming console first and foremost. Insert a dvd, play a gain. No bs with upgrading your vide drivers, service packs, etc as experienced with gaming on the pc platform.
All the hacks and media center capabilities that have been added to the XBox are just gravy.
Actually...what is it the Lindows box can do that an XBox can't do?
Just imagine what would happen if the same thing happened within Redmond and someone stole the source code to say, Office.
Maybe that would make MSFT give notice and finally make a true effort of fixing the problems within their software products.
How fabulous would it be for us if those funky Office file formats were exposed because someone stole the source code through an Outlook exploit. Forget those cream pies, this is the kind of egg in your face humiliation that MSFT needs in order to be serious.
Was watching a show on tv last night and they announced that Jack Valenti of MPAA has decided that they will no longer send out screener tapes to members of the Academy for awards selection. Apparently alot of academy members copied the tapes and they ended up in the hands of family members, friends, etc. This was also done to deter the piracy of those high quality screeners.
Members of the Academy must now actually pay to see every movie in a theatre in order to consider it for an award.
No one *wants* to drop 1.3M on a computer. They may have in the past because there wasn't any choice. Nowadays, there are cheaper alternatives that provide more processing power.
"why does anybody need a fancy client to play a text-mode game?"
If you're a power player then you would understand why. Seeing as you're not and you probably havent even tried a MUD, I'll fill you in.
If you ever want to play multiple characters at once, these clients are very handy. Before clients were available, we old school types used multiple xterms to do this. With a client, you have full control within one session. Client's also give you scripting abilities so pc's can be programmed to perform actions based on events. Very powerful, and also considered cheating by most.
Wow, why bother typing out that review when you could have just posted a link to ORA's description.;)
Can anyone explain the differences between "Java Web Services in a Nutshell" and "Java Web Services" both published by O'Reilly? Look very similar with the latter probably a bit outdated seeing as it was published March 2002. Is this Nutshell book just a rehash of the other book but with updated API's?
Sorry, it can't work this way. For example, one guy is lazy and stupid, and it takes him 3 days to code "Hello World" in Perl. And another guy is -normal- (not even genius), and it takes him 3 hours to do a similar job.
Whether you pay both of them salary or an hourly wage, the end result is the same. You have one resource that is producing more for the same cost. The problem isn't in the form of compensation here. It lies in the management's ability to recognize this person's deficiency and fire them or pay them less.
You estimate some reasonable time needed...
And now you stumble upon the unenviable task of estimating time for tasks. Honestly, how often do the developer and project manager agree on a time estimate? And even then, how often is that estimate correct?
This is EXACTLY what I experienced when I bought a new replacement battery. I don't use the laptop alot so it's plugged in and just sitting aside on my desk. After 6mths, the battery life was shot. It'll last no longer than 10mins.
I feel so dumb for buying a wireless access point when the laptop is still tied down by the ac adapter.
The high rate of occurence as evident by the posts here suggests that something is severely wrong and we should all be compensated somehow. Any suggestions?
If you think it's a nice "to have" and you think you can actually write the script to do so...why don't you get off your fat ass and do it? Contribute instead of just taking.
For the person who is learning, it's beneficial to see exactly which package a particular class belongs to. Obviously in this code example it didn't matter but if you were dealing with 4 different packages all added using a *, then one might be hard pressed to find a class.
Considering it's a book on Java, being specific suits it's audience. The author isn't worried about code maintenance issues here.
Ok so it's not an application rewrite. Ok so it is ONLY a 5 line patch.

I has an Instant Messaging app included, I wonder which IM it is? MSN? ICQ? Yahoo? Proprietary?
Supported mail providers doesn't list gmail (yes I know it's in beta). Does it allow you to configure your own mail provider?
Can the Calendar sync with iCal? Does it support OS X at all?
the shitter with a wifi connection

I actually use Firefox over Safari.
Is it just personal preference? Why do you prefer Safari?
This is a professional series machine. If you are a poor student, face the harsh reality and buy an iMac|eMac|iBook.
The G5 is professional grade, it hasn't been filtered down to their cheaper lines yet.
First bile
I really don't understand why you are bragging about the 64bit machine when you don't even have a 64bit Radeon driver to use it with.

Virtual PC doesn't work for G5 and MSFT isn't planning on releasing a version that does.
