I don't think vending machines are really very normal here in the U.S. I've never personally seen any kind of vending machine that accepts credit cards, and bill accepters only became common fairly recently.
*shrug* This machine seems cool, though. I'd use it!
President can make a mockery of the legal system - a system which serves as the foundation for our government, spawn a generation of kids who think that stealing from stockholders isn't stealing, and not but a few years later be awarding huge government contracts to his crooked vice president's ex-company, this shouldn't surprise anyone. There's far too little accountability, and with respect to Bush, absolutely no sense of shame.
I'd pay a few bucks to push the button on you. So, what does that make me?!:)

While the point of your post is quite valid, I'd like to correct one thing: absurdly tight border restrictions
The (approximately) 9,000 km border with Canada is completely uncontrolled except at major highways and urban areas. The 3,300 km border with Mexico is somewhat more controlled, but is readily penetrated in remote areas. Add in the lightly patrolled coastlines, and the immense and basically uninhabited border of Alaska, and one has what is essentially unimpeded access to the US. (Pre 9-11, anyway; things may have changed.)

Uh, right-wingers are right-wingers because they want lower taxes, and they want lower taxes because they're in higher tax brackets, and they're in higher tax brackets because they're rich. Rich right-wingers support right-wing media, and well. Left-wingers don't have as much money, which is why they support the hell out of high taxes to support government spending. Left-wing media gets nada.
Every (American) state driving manual I've ever seen states explicitly: Driving is a privilege, not a right. That doesn't seem to make the bad drivers any better, though.
That being said, not all American drivers are as bad as you say. They span a continuum, from Michigan (superb) to New Mexico (horrid).
Uh, no. If you designed a car that required the user to buy another car and modify it, and some guy came along and designed parts that didn't require you to buy another car, and he properly licensed your technology which had no naming requirements.... Well, get peeved if you like, but there's no real point.
Tough. All GNU did was make proprietary OSs palatable. Without Linux, *all* free software developers and users would have to buy an OS first, just to get a kernel.
And if RMS felt so damn strongly about getting his GNU in the name, he could have put it in the GPL, which he wrote.
I don't claim that RMS is a nut or an egomaniac; I'm sure he just doesn't want to get forgotten by the Linux suit crowd. Well, we know who he is, and his work won't (can't?) be forgotten, and most of us find free software important enough without his ranting.
I heard the origin of the "Stupid Polack" of joke fame was based on the perceived intelligence of a country that sent cavalry troops against the German panzers during the Blitzkrieg.
After evangelizing the hell out of his baby, the developer has completely lost interest in the project. He has totally abandoned all the people who became interested and contributed code, and furthermore, his ground rules say that no one else can touch his core code.
One of these people said, "Enough!", took the code as he has *every* right to, and made his *own* project out of it, leaving the original project firmly and safely (albeit very lonely) in the hands of the original developer.
It is somewhat of a misnomer to call this process "forking"; the new project is completely different from the base code. Different in implementation, different in goals.
You feel old on Slashdot? I remember when anonymity wasn't just for trolls and crapflooders. You really don't have a clue in my book.
I have a real disability when it comes to Nethack: I *hate* resuming a saved game. If I can't play it in one sitting, I lose interest. Since hack changed to nethack, this has been a problem for me. Hell, I only ascended *once* on the last release.
Oh well, building a good character is the most fun part of the game for me, anyway. I guess I'll let the new release suck up the precious fragments of my spare time, once again....
Good. I'll volunteer at the food bank, and when they catch me hawking a loogie in the oatmeal, I'll just tell them "Hey, I'm *good enough*, if not quite perfect!"
Remember that space tourist that went up with the Russians? NASA had a shit hemmorage over it, going so far as to label James Cameron a "true patriot" because he was willing to wait for NASA's blessing. That was Stage 1 in NASA's assholism. These restrictions are Stage 2. As much as I love the manned space program, I won't feel too bad when these bureaucratic idiots get slapped. Let's give the money to the Russians, instead.

Wow, that was easy.
And to think, people dare to say Linux users aren't helpful and friendly!
Clue: You're welcome.
Although I am a die-hard emacs freek, on occasion I use one of those spiffy one-handed chording "keyboards", and I must say, vi *rocks* in that case.
Okay, that's all. Get back to your cubicles and your Nerf(tm) Mortar Launchers.
How come nobody ever worries about the games Hitler played?

If you're being sarcastic, yes, maybe that's why Debian has the problems it does.
If you're serious, Debian isn't a total failure, but it is getting less co-ordinated all the time, true.
compile the damn source code.
Have you no pride?
Actually, he's just urging developers to use the GPL. He's not trying to kill anything, or even discourage participation in it.
Surprisingly enough, it seems Slashdot screwed up when they said otherwise. Hard to believe.

At the current state of the art, software engineering is about as codified and scientifically verifiable as medicine was in the 12th century.
I understand your anti-computer position. It would seem that your keyboard has declared a personal vendetta against you.

I say shut your stupid mouth - I'm obnoxious
Government says shut your stupid mouth - you've been censored
Gee, could it maybe make a difference who says something? Perhaps, just *perhaps*, language is not neutral as to speaker and listener.
