    An added benefit of using light rather than electricity is that it can be routed through a circuit with almost no interference in signal, and it eliminates the need to lay down large numbers of electrical wires.

    There's no interference from electrical signals, but there is interference from light. And rather than needing a large number of electrical wires, this requires large numbers of light waveguides.

    A product of the taxpayer? Or a product of the Queen? Who, indeed, paid for it?

    In the discussion on Wikipedia there is mention that the museum said they didn't want to give the images to Wikipedia because they wanted the money from selling them. The museum wanting money is not relevant to the public domain status of the paintings. I don't know what UK law is regarding originality of copies of PD works.

    You have it backwards. He wants to reduce nuclear weapons, not missiles.
    So put all your satellites in one pile, use an Orion drive to launch them, and the number of nuclear bombs will be reduced during a cheap launch. (Well, the per-satellite launch figure will be cheap...)

    Oh, so checking the "no" box and clicking on the big "Save my preferences" button on the page which appears during IE7 startup isn't enough to save preferences? That's an odd user interface.

    I'm hardly surprised. For months, each (occasional) time that I start IE7 it asks me if I want to change my default search engine, and refuses to store my negative answer.
