    I wonder if they also calculated how much they lose from Linux developers not helping them debug their software; I also am less likely to help them. Outside developers, that is, as a significant fraction of a company's developers are certain to be Linux users (that's what I hear when I talk to them).

    Before they start reverse-engineering drivers, first clearly document the manufacturer's failure. For years I've been avoiding giving such manufacturers any of my money. I'm quite willing to help them fail faster in the marketplace.

    A dedicated Ethernet cable is also a serial line. Using TCP/IP on it helps ensure the data gets to the other end of the wire. Whether you use direct cabling or a logging-only LAN depends upon your needs, but I rather doubt you have so much logging traffic that it floods a LAN devoted to logging.

    It's not easy to create a winged vehicle because the thin atmosphere means the wings have to be huge. But they can't use huge wings because they would first have to withstand orbital-speed entry heating and deceleration. If the wings aren't huge then they have to fly very fast in order to get enough lift. But there is no runway so they have to land slowly with huge wheels...or land on rockets.

    Or start shipping the human living quarters, with robots assembling it, and putting all the packing peanuts in a crater for use during the landing.
