I have an idea. There are 100 patents available. No more. Never. Ever. Not 1000. That's too many. If something worth patenting is invented, it has to be better than one of the existing 100, which will then lose its patent status. If it's not better, tough luck.
It's hard to find a country that could take on such a task. But maybe someone could start small and... Like... Crash planes into financial districts in big cities?
then implement the 3D stuff using JNI (Java Native Interface) and OpenGL. Wouldn't that be an interesting experiment? I've done some tests using Java, OpenGL and JNI and it surely is possible but I haven't looked much at Java3D.
The laser range finder used is produced by SICK. I'm not sure which model they are using but check out this one for example.
The distance to objects is determined using a technique called "time of flight measurement" so yes, it's basically the time it takes for the laser to reflect.
We considered using one of these when building a mobile robot a while ago but they are quite expensive and we ended up with... Well... A robot without laser range finders.
The current PDA:s using XScales have horrible battery lives. Look at the ones from HP, Dell, etc.
I want to be able to use a gadget like this the way I use my cell phone now. Charge it once a week or so. A device like a PDA or a cell phone is something you should be able to trust while travelling. If you forget to charge a PDA one day, the next day you shouldn't have to worry about not using it too much. The P900 seemed like a better alternative with respect to this.

Exchange replacement is hard

We're trying to replace Exchange where I work and I've been involved in the process. I suppose it all depends on which features of exchange you want to replace. The main problem, I think, is Outlook. Outlook is hard to talk to. We would like to be able to use other clients along with Outlook (Mozilla and Moz Calendar, some web-based service maybe, Evolution, etc).
But Outlook has to stay. Primarily because no other application is able to do synchronization with PDA:s (both PocketPC and Palm devices) in a decent way. It's a shame that such a basic feature seems so hard to implement in OSS clients.
Mail is easy to replace. Exchange already supports IMAP, and throwing in an OSS IMAP-server (Cyrus for example) is a piece of cake. Tell everyone to configure Outlook to use the new IMAP-server and you're done.
Address book functionality _should_ work with an LDAP-server like OpenLDAP. Read this.
The calendar thing is the hard part. Outlook supports publishing iCalendar data via WebDAV and FTP, but that's just FREEBUSY-info wich Mozilla Calendar ignores, and Mozilla publishes complete iCal-events which Outlook ignores. Great. Sure, there are closed source plug-ins for Outlook that could do the job, but we're after a completely open source solution at the server end.
I think we're going to replace what we can anyway and just skip the calendar part right now. Hopefully some software will evolve that we can drop in for a complete calendar solution some time in the near future.

NVIDIA Statement
NVIDIA works closely with developers to optimize games for GeForceFX. These optimizations (including shader optimizations) are the result of the co-development process. This is the approach NVIDIA would have preferred also for 3DMark03. "
I wonder if ATI would love close cooperation between NVidia and Futuremark...

Here is this:
"The first technology--a prototype developed by IBM Research--is the Meta Pad, a 3-by-5-inch, 9-ounce device that an IBM official hailed as the "ultimate personal server." The Meta Pad contains an 800-MHz chip, a 10GB hard drive, a 3D graphics chip, and 128MB of memory; it is capable of running Windows XP.
The device, which supports Bluetooth, is designed to help give users access to all their data whether they are connected to their desktops or laptops, via a docking station or wirelessly over the Internet. "
I own a Palm Vx. I charge it once every two weeks. I use it as a calendar, as a phonebook and to ssh to my machine at home using my Nokia when I absolutely need to (20 column terminal... ).
My Palm is a great little thing but it's getting old and worn down. I need to replace it soon and I can't seem to find any alternatives out there. I want 8+ MB, good PIM-software and AT LEAST the same battery life as the Palm Vx. Bluetooth would be nice as my cell phone has that. I don't care about color screens, mp3-players and digital cameras. What I DO care about is battery life. It's NOT tolerable that my calendar dies because I forgot to put it in the cradle yesterday. Any suggestions?

I don't accept that. I charge my cell phone - a Nokia 6310i - once a week (at best), and my Palm Vx twice a month and I'm not buying anything that I have to charge more often. Sorry.

Kinda wierd to be releasing a product in 2012 that won't play 1080 video. I certainly wouldn't like a desktop on a 1280x720 display.
I would definitely like to pay less for hardware not being able to play video at all.
That's the game I thought of when I saw the headline. Played it when I was 12 or something.
Why?
It's hard to find a country that could take on such a task. But maybe someone could start small and... Like... Crash planes into financial districts in big cities?

I still think he meant inferior.
And I just hope Plex86 (or some other similiar OSS project) evolves and supports multiple OS:es soon. An open source alternative would be nice.
No... I could be wrong ofcourse. It might be some other manufacturer, but it sure looks like a SICK device.
Here's some interesting reading:

The second one is by the german guys in the article.

Well, I suppose so. If you can finance your break with some other income it should be possible. Like writing a book about hacking the X-Box.
