Or, more likely, Twitter is afraid they will cease using Twitter altogether and look for an alternative forum that they perceive as more Politician friendly.
2. Our drones are effectively remotely piloted aircraft. Not "killbots". There is some chair jockey in a building in the Nevada desert who pilots the craft and fires the missiles and then goes home to be with his family after his shift is done.
This assumes people ever approach the ability to retire again.
Gone are the days of retiring with a pension to someplace warm, never to work again.
Welcome to the days of concentration of wealth and the need for perpetual employment, but combined with the "joys" of outsourcing, offshoring, reduction of pensions and uncertain future employment.
I know this is SlashDot and its not in vogue to bother reading the linked article, but at least try out the actual Headline:
Facebookâ(TM)s Oculus to Pay About $60 Million for Gesture-Control Firm Pebbles
and from the article itself:
... Pebbles has recently integrated its technology into the virtual-reality headset developed by Facebookâ(TM)s Oculus VR, enabling users to interact with the device via hand and finger gestures. Unlike competing gesture-identification technologies, Pebblesâ(TM) enables users to see images of their own arms and hands in their virtual-reality display. In some other technologies, users canâ(TM)t âoeseeâ their bodies, or only see generic digitally-generated versions. Pebblesâ(TM) technology can show unique features like clothing, scars or items held in oneâ(TM)s hand....
This is much more like the guys who figured out how to make the VR "monitor and computer" deciding to buy the guys working on the VR "mouse and keyboard" because they need each other.
Shhh this is Slashdot. Common sense goes out the window for most posters.
Bluntly the Region (much like Africa) has been in semi-chaos ever since it was "divided up" by European powers following WWII.
I would argue that the Palestinian people have gotten a raw deal in it all, but it seems like a lot of it is not being happy with what they are offered, deciding to roll the dice for more, losing, and then bemoaning what they lost. Life
Sadly Palestinian leadership (and that of the surrounding countries of Syria, Egypt and Jordan) have kept them locked into refugee camps for generations, perpetuating hatred for the sake of international propaganda value instead of allowing them citizenship and the ability to integrate into society.
pfsense routers using OpenVPN connection between the two locations (probably location B acting as a Client to location A server, with it set up to route all traffic through the tunnel to A).
Likewise you could also just set up an OpenVPN server at location B and use an OpenVPN client to connect from a machine on "A" to the "B" network for when you need to work on things there (but then you won't have the traffic routing from "B" through "A" before it hits the Internet).
Personally I used a small fanless box from NetGate (that came pre-installed w/pfSense and 6 NICs) to run our SoHo office of ~10 devices on the computer network + another 15 phones on a second network feeding into a second NIC. Load balanced WAN connections from two different providers, and OpenVPN server for remote connections for fixing things at home, and all the bells and usual bells and whistles (for me at least).
Oddly I had the same decision to make with Time Warner Cable in my area and came to a similar decision.
Internet - DSL (definitely slower speeds than TWC claims they provide) TV - Rabbit ears (OTA antenna for whats available), supplemented by Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, still comes out cheaper than what TWC was charging, and gives me more content than I can consume.
True enough, but its a short jump to think "Space Aircraft Carrier w/huge gun we don't see much" might mean "Space Battleship w/huge gun we see a lot more".
Especially if its an old memory.
"Star Blazers" (which your friends who know Macross would probably call Space Battleship Yamato), predates Robotech by at least 5 years and for many was the first introduction to Anime in any form.
At which point Uber might (I stress the word "might"), just get the appropriate liability insurance as an umbrella covering their "contractors", pay the required operator fees, chip the spent money out of the drivers pockets, claim they were always going to do this if needed to but hadn't realized they were required to, and use the garnished name recognition to take a major stake in the updated business model.
Not sure if they just plan to grow and become a conglomerate middle man, or if they are pursuing a growth phase pre-speculative acquisition, but either way the people in charge there now have show they have no willingness to follow existing laws unless forced to, in their pursuit of the large market share.
Also so the crew taking care of them could see them and make sure that they arrive still living. But don't let common sense reign in a scenario involving a crew piloting a stolen alien starship in poor condition.
and Time Travel... can't forget that part of the scenario.
Building Management I work in wired the building for our local Cable Co. They wanted to provide free basic cable. We passed an insisted on free internet instead.
But then we're a private company, not a government bureaucracy.
Its not a matter of shutting down television, but revoking their franchise, and allowing competitors access.... oh wait... now that all the Cable Companies are merging there are no competitors anymore.
Another thing I do is send my taxes in a month early, in case I make a mistake, they will let me know instead of fining me. If you're getting a refund that doesn't matter though (because you won't be fined for being late if you're getting a refund, April 15th is not actually the deadline for a refund).
Actually it can make a difference, but you are correct, it doesn't affect how much money you're due (if you have a legitimate refund due you).
IANACPA, but my wife is (and prepares personal tax "during the season").
In some states (and the Fed), the pool of money available for refunds often gets depleted mid-way through the tax season. Submitting early gets your refund processed before the state/fed need to replenish these funds, which can sometimes get you your money faster.
No, but they might have spent $3.9B so they can say its CPU is not "Made in China" and have a Chinese company "procure" the designs and start making the next gen chips based on the tech, while also having to worry about grey market versions of Samsung and Apple devices that utilize the processor.
If they can control a key component of the device (and "made in america" certainly provides that), then they can minimize grey market goods impact on their branded devices by potentially relegating them to an inferior parts chain.
Oddly I finally am catching up on back episodes of Person of Interest.
Just saw "Prophets" which contained a few clips of failed AI attempts... felt very apropos, so I tracked down a link on YouTube. For your viewing (and thinking) pleasure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkCGDcnmXEs
Google already has a separate lease for another portion of the former air base, where it wants to build a second campus. Page and Brin have also used the Moffett runways for their collection of private jets, under another lease arrangement that's been criticized by some watchdog groups who say NASA gave the executives a sweetheart deal.
Because they are essentially renting the space next door to their new campus, and hanger space?
and part of the settlement was that Apple Computer Corp agreed to stay out of the Music business... until a bunch of years later when they renegotiated.
Or, more likely, Twitter is afraid they will cease using Twitter altogether and look for an alternative forum that they perceive as more Politician friendly.

Pretty much sums up the last 15 years of politics.

True.
Just as an FYI though, it seems that being the pilot, is a job that comes with way more stress than was anticipated (or than the general public appreciates).

Seriously. How many people would rob a liquor store if they didn't have to be there in person and there was no chance of being caught?
Interesting angle that I haven't heard brought up much ... and me without mod points today.

I bet we can solve this real fast if we just send the Pope to meet with Iranian Supreme Leader ...

I think Afghanistan has a relatively loose immigration policy (or at least the use to until recently).
Forget that! We need to go directly to the source and put the panels on the sun!
Won't work. What happens at night?
We need Solar Panels on the Moon too!
Duh!
Really?
