    For scientific computing, Fortran with Excel is suitable enough. You'll need some kind of graphic display for your data. If the computations are more complex, then Matlab is great for matrices and system equations. If you want to build a simple program using math, then use something like Visual C++ Express. Most of these programs have open source equivalents so use whatever is best for your needs.
