It's better than the plot summary suggests! The author has Polish ancestry, so some of her plot elements come from eastern European fairy tales. Since a lot of fantasy stories draw on western European/middle ages history, this made Uprooted more interesting to me. I also enjoyed translations of Stanislaw Lem's work when I encountered that for the first time.
Similar "hackers" were some of the most prolific spammers on Usenet in the early 90s. Everybody who administered a news server back in the day probably remembers the incident, and many of us felt like mass murdering these guys in response. They practically invented the spambot: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S...
Not to mention the billions lost in tax evasion to the likes of Google, Twitter, and Facebook, among others. This is a manufactured controversy to distract the IRS from their job at catching tax evaders (which is what the video is about).
These employees have had their already pitiful salaries frozen for years. If 60k in entertainment is enough to keep them from going postal, it's money well spent.
Check out the Democracy Now! 3rd party debates, which were produced by professionals. Gary Johnson turned those down, but you can still watch Jill Stein go up against Rocky Anderson and some redneck from the Constitution Party.
Unfortunately the sponsors of this one didn't seem to know what they were doing, and it didn't help that they were using Google+, which clearly deserves its "beta" label.

I was just in Beijing last week, and stayed at this type of hotel. Foreigners are still behind a firewall (and it shows from the performance), just a more permissive firewall than the locals have. The choice of what is censored seems almost random; for example, I could not get the "yourcallradio.org" website and a few other mild political blogs but I could get the U.S. Google and CNN. About 20% of the time, the hotel's internet connection was switched over to the "local" firewall, and during those times we could hardly get to any U.S. sites.
Internet activity on the "foreigners" firewall is still monitored. I tunneled traffic through ssh to my home server to get around their censorship, and within minutes somebody was trying to break in using a ssh dictionary attack, spoofing the same IP address my traffic had come from (fortunately, I use "denyhosts"). Presumably, a local citizen using this circumvention method would have been asked some questions.
Apparently, Web 2.0's distinguishing feature is Really Small Fonts. Both the 1st and 3rd designs (the 2nd one was slashdotted even before Coral Cache got it) are much less legible than the current one.
On the contrary, home invasion is a very innovative new revenue stream, which has so far only been tapped by our phone and electric companies. Ensuring that all corporations have this right is key to their remaining competitive in the global marketplace, and is thus essential to our national security.
I've been told that the recount was not conducted legally, as the precincts that were recounted were not randomly chosen, as required by state law. Do you have any insight into how the precincts that you recounted were chosen? If Blackwell participated in electoral fraud, I assume he would know which precincts were "safe" to recount and which might show discrepancies.
And of course as you point out, electoral manipulation can happen in many ways; when the election is fairly close to begin with, it doesn't have to be as blatant as programming every voting machine to misrecord votes.
I think Kokomo was named as part of a vast Hoosier propaganda campaign to confuse tourists into visiting. There are all kinds of small towns in Indiana named after places people wished they lived instead: Atlanta, Peru, Miami, Ireland, Brazil, Richmond... sadly, even New Haven and Jonesboro.
Rational thinking skills? What real world have you been living in? Unless you're in a techinical job, you don't need them.
While unemployed PhDs are lining up for jobs at Home Depot or Walmart, Kansas schools will provide the next generation of successful entrepreneurs in rapidly growing fields like astrology and pet psychiatry.

Like "incentivize" or "impactful." Mine is "Leverigize123."
The linked article is from LA, not SF. Local news sources covered it better, and seem to imply this was a PR stunt:

I'm going to wait for Elon Musk to post the data logs before I believe this story. Clearly a hit piece on Renault.
If you're into that sort of thing, she's also experienced in light bondage, having spent 8 hours handcuffed to a chair along with her running mate:

It will probably be at least $5,000 per bullet. You better hope I can't get no bullets on layaway!
Financial sites? I'd settle for them letting me use the hyphen in my name.

No, the one about killing ponies was a different story. Although in this case both the pro- and anti-pony forces are Republican.

From the press release:
Z is housed in a flat-roofed building about the size and shape of an aging high-school gymnasium.
Somebody's bitter about their lab space.

Time to renew your EFF membership! (there are also the tax advantages of joining before the end of the year)

Reminds me of the time I bought into the slashdot IPO.
